Has natural raw power to stack and control vs. the inside running game...Shows impressive lateral agility in pursuit and the acceleration to chase down plays at the opposite end of the field...Uses his hands well to separate and has that short, sudden burst needed to collapse the pocket...Has worked to develop counter moves to use after initial contact...Compensates for coming out from his stance a little bit high by delivering power on contact with fluid hip snap and at the proper pad level...Two-year reserve for the Beavers, joining the program in 2001 from the College of the Red-woods...Recorded 38 tackles (22 solos) with nine stops behind the line of scrimmage, three pass deflections, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 23 games at OSU.
2002 SEASON
Shared right defensive tackle duties with Dwan Edwards, recording 29 tackles (19 solos) with seven stops for losses of 12 yards...Deflected three passes...Recovered and caused a fumble.
Eastern Kentucky...Caused a fumble and finished the day with 5 hits (4 solos).
Temple...Had a 3-tackle effort.
Nevada-Las Vegas, UCLA, Arizona State, Oregon and California...Posted a tackle in each game.
Fresno State...Had 3 solo tackles with two stops for losses, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection.
Southern California...Made 2 solo tackles.
Arizona...Delivered 4 tackles (3 solos).
Stanford...Tackled tailback Kerry Carter behind the line of scrimmage and batted away a pass.
Washington...Made 3 tackles, including one for a loss and deflected a pass.
Pittsburgh (Insight.com Bowl)...Had a stop behind the line of scrimmage and made 3 tackles (2 solos).
2001 SEASON
Appeared in ten games as a reserve defensive tackle, recording 9 tackles (3 solos) with two stops for losses of 9 yards.
New Mexico State, UCLA, Washington State, Northern Arizona and California...Made one tackle in each game.
Southern California...Had a stop for a 3-yard loss.
Washington...Registered 3 tackles, including one for a 6-yard loss.
JUNIOR COLLEGE
Two-year standout at the College of the Redwoods (Eureka, Cal.)...Selected second-team All-American by J.C. Grid-Wire as he played in 10 of 11 games for the Corsairs as a sophomore in 2000...Had 34 solo tackles, 16 tackles for losses of 66 yards, seven sacks for 39 yards, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks...Returned a blocked PAT for a 2-point defensive conversion...Team's MVP as a defensive tackle and top defensive player on his squad... Added first-team All-League (Mid-Empire) and All-State honors among California junior colleges...Served as team captain in 2000...First-team All-League pick as a freshman...College of the Red-woods posted a 9-2 record in 2000 and participated in the Capital Shrine Bowl in Sacramento...Played for Coach Dave Banducci..."He made things happen for us," said Banducci. "If we wanted a sack, he got it. If we wanted a kick blocked, he did it. If we had to get the ball back, he got it back for us. In my opinion, James was the top defensive lineman in the state."

Attended McKay (Salem, Ore.) High...Two-year starter at defensive tackle under Coach Scott Default, graduating in 1998...Earned two letters in track and field while competing in the shot put and discus... First-team All-Valley League performer as a senior and he earned all-region honors from the Oregon Statesman...Played in the Oregon Bowl All-Star game in the summer of 1998 and was named the Defensive Lineman of the Game
