Green Bay vs. Detroit
11/3/96 - Packers Win 28-18
Box Score
After recovering from the shock of being scored upon first for the first time this season, and seeing the visiting Detroit Lions claim a 10-7 lead in the second quarter, the Packers responded to score 21 unanswered points and proceed to a 28-18 victory on a brisk (43 degrees) but sunny afternoon in Lambeau Field.
Edgar Bennett rushes for 68 yards on the day |
Quarterback Brett Favre, rebounding after going without a touchdown pass the previous week against Tampa Bay for the first time in 15 regular season games, was back on target with a vengeance, passing for all 4 Green Bay scores along the way.
Completing 24 of 35 passes for 281 yards, he made one-yard scoring throws to running back Dorsey Levens and Terry Mickens in the first and second quarters, respectively, and a subsequent, 6-yard TD pass to Mickens and a 65-yard bomb to Don Beebe, both in the third period, to mount a 28-10 lead.
The Lions interrupted this pattern of success by tallying the final points of the afternoon in the fourth quarter via Don Majkowski's 8-yard bullseye to wide receiver Brett Perriman, a development the Lions followed with a 2-yard pass to Herman Moore in the end zone for the 2-point conversion, closing the final reading to 28-18.
Mickens, making the first regular season start of his three-year NFL career, led all Packers wideouts with 7 receptions for 52 yards, Beebe emerging with a team-leading 106 yards on 4 catches despite twice being felled by resounding hits from Detroit defenders and having to temporarily leave the game.
Edgar Bennett paced an acceptable running game with 68 yards in 17 attempts, a 4.0-yard average.
The Packers prevailed despite the rushing heroics of the Lions' gifted Barry Sanders, who amassed 153 yards in 20 carries for the Lions with another of his virtuosic performances.
Majkowski, making his first start in Lambeau Field since 1992, when he was a Packer, went the route at quarterback for the Lions in behalf of the injured Scott Mitchell and completed 15 of 32 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown.
Sean Jones and Reggie White welcome Don Majkowski back to Lambeau Field |
Packers defenders proved somewhat anti-social toward their former teammate, sacking Majkowski 5 times for 26 yards in losses, Santana Dotson felling him twice. LeRoy Butler and Doug Evans registered other solo sacks and Reggie White and Sean Jones shared the other.
Edgar Bennett made Packers history against the Lions. With his 68-yard effort, he became only the eighth running back in Green Bay annals to rush for 3,000 yards in a career. He now has gained 3,012 yards in 846 attempts, a 3.6-yard average.
He thus joined an elite group - Jim Taylor, John Brockington, Tony Canadeo, Clarke Hinkle, Gerry Ellis, Paul Hornung and Donny Anderson - all of whom rushed for 3,000 or more yards in a Green Bay uniform.
