Green Bay vs. Buffalo
8/16/97 - Packers Win 35-3 (Preseason)
In impressive preseason form, the Packers put on what could have passed for
a "clinic" in dispatching the Buffalo Bills at Toronto's SkyDome over the
weekend in their first American Bowl appearance. Ahead by 21-0 early in the
second quarter, the game was essentially over midway through the third
quarter, at which point the Packers had mounted a dominant, 28-0 lead and
given no indication defensively of permitting any significant retaliation
by the Bills.

Quarterback Brett Favre presided at the production of three early
touchdowns and a 21-0 advantage before giving way to Steve Bono, and then
Doug Pederson. Favre passed for two scores, hitting Antonio Freeman on an
18-yard crossing route for the first touchdown and Freeman again with a
3-yard strike for the third TD.

Sandwiched between them was a 24-yard burst off right tackle by Dorsey
Levens, who wheeled into the end zone untouched with 3:40 remaining in the
opening period.

Pederson officiated at the fourth score, finding wide receive Derrick Mayes
with a 15-yard bullseye midway through the third period.

After placekicker Steve Christie spared the Bills a shutout by kicking a
41-yard field goal, former Charger Aaron Hayden slanted off right tackle
and into the end zone on a 15-yard fourth quarter excursion which, like
Levens' sortie, found him scoring untouched.

The game's statistics are highly misleading, as the score suggests. The
Packers had only a 70-yard edge in the numbers, 312 net yards to Buffalo's
242, and the "total offensive plays" and "time of possession" categories
reflected an astounding imbalance. The Bills, the figures show, ran off 80
plays to the Packers' 52, and controlled the football much longer, 35
minutes, 11 seconds, to the Packers' 24 minutes, 49 seconds.
A noteworthy sidelight from the Packers' perspective was the return to
action of wide receiver Robert Brooks, who had not played since last
October 14 when he suffered a major knee injury on Green Bay's first
offensive play in a "Monday Night Football" game against the San Francisco
49ers in Lambeau Field.
Brooks settled for 2 receptions for 9 yards, officially, a "touchdown"
reception in the right corner of the end zone being voided by an
out-of-bounds call on the catch.
