Green Bay vs. Chicago - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay

Regular Season - Packers Win 24-23

COACH HOLMGREN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS:
(on whether he would have gone for 2 points 'in that situation)' "I'm not sure...I said if I was playing away and I thought we were not playing as well as the other team and had a chance to win the game, that I would go for 2. I have not had to make that decision and it's very easy for me to say anything right now. So I don't second guess that move at all. I think they played a real fine football game. They had a chance to win the game right there...They took the chance."

(on the defense having come up with the big plays when needed) "Particularly on the 2-point play. That was a great play...and they got a couple turnovers today that we were able to convert into points...Shoot, the quarterback sneak on fourth down (when the Bears' Erik Kramer was stopped at the 1-yard line by Gabe Wilkins and Bob Kuberski) was a big play."

(on whether the linebackers were attempting to 'make a statement' following Wayne Simmons' departure) "I think we have a real fine group of young linebackers. I really do. And Wayne (Simmons) did a nice job for us when he was with us. But Seth Joyner was very happy to be on the field and get a chance to play. Brian (Williams) and Bernardo (Harris) are having real fine seasons, in my opinion. And then you have Lamont Hollinquest -- they've got some young guys backing 'em up, and I think that they'll get nothing but better, really."

(on what appeared to be a 'slow start' by Brett Favre) "It's just a matter of playing a little bit, throwing some balls and having some success. You know, you throw an interception early and all of a sudden, your emotions take over a little bit and you're a little angry -- you get a little whatever -- and you kind of have to work through that...But he did...And the receivers, I thought, did a nice job. Freeman made a couple beautiful catches...Chmura did a nice job.

"All in all, I thought, really, we ran the ball decently...It was a pretty good team effort, all the way around."

(on whether Favre has been 'as consistent' as might have been hoped) "So much is expected of him -- superhuman things every time he steps on the field. I think that's a lot to ask of anybody. Now he will be judged by our team's record. "Statistically, it will be very different for him to duplicate what he has done the last two years. I've said that already. But he is the leader of this football team. If he plays well, usually we win. And if he doesn't play well, sometimes we lose. And so there's a lot on his shoulders. And he can handle it. And it's a long season...and I want him to get away from it a little, too, this week."

(on whether he was happier with the success in the red zone -- 2 touchdowns in 4 trips) "Yeah, that's better...We usually are very good in there and I said let's see where we are at the end of the year...And we've played seven ball games right now. The bye couldn't come at a better time for us. We had a little bit of a skeleton crew going for a while...We are really banged up and now want to use this time coming up to really heal up if we can."

Brett Favre: "A win's a win -- we'll take it any way we can. I think Chicago -- give them a lot of credit -- they played really hard and they played well. You know, we'll take it. I think everyone's a little beat up right now, but excited. Kind of don't know what to think, really. We expected it to be a battle -- we expect every game to be a battle, and we were not let down today, that's for sure."

(on whether it was 'Like old times, finding Chewy (Mark Chmura) a couple times in the end zoneš) "Yeah, we got down there and we made some things happen. You know, they blitzed us a lot as we thought they would. And, as I've always said when they blitz, if you win just a couple of 'em it can be the difference in the game, and I think it was today."

(on whether he was surprised that the Bears 'went for 2 in that situation') "No, you know, they were 0-and-6. And I went over to Coach Wannstedt after the game and just told him, 'Heck of a game.' I thought he did a heck of a job. He said, 'You know, we weren't going to give you the chance, with the game tied up, to come back and kick a field goal, so we wanted to go for it and force you to score a touchdown,' so I can understand that, you know."

(on whether, if the Bears had succeeded, was he 'pretty confident' in his offense at that point) "Yeah, I am...I'm glad it worked out the way it did, though -- we didn't have to go out there. Anything can happen. But I feel very confident we can go down and score. But the way they were blitzing us and making things happen, it would have been tough."

(on whether the game plan had changed in the second half with running back Dorsey Levens sidelined by a clavicle injury) "No, not at all...Aaron Hayden is a really great back, and only one can play at a time. Dorsey played with that injury most of the first half, but when Aaron came in, nothing really changed."

(on 'could this bye week come at a better time?') "You know, who knows? It seems like this is the best time for it, so we're definitely going to enjoy it and try to get back healthy. We all need to get healthy. After a win like this, it's good to kind of let the dust settle a little bit."

(on being tied for the division lead) "It sure beats (being) tied for last...Those two games we lost were basically like this -- they were nailbiters -- so we just need to sit back and tell ourselves it's going to be like this all year. And we've got two weeks to kind of enjoy it a little bit, but also realize what's in front of us."

(on how he would grade his performance against the Bears) "Well, it was a winning performance. There were some things I could have done better, but I knew going into this game that it would be that type of game -- that you'll hit a few and you'll miss a few...And you get hit, you get knocked down and you've got to get back up. You know, the old saying if the horse throws you, you've got to get right back on it...I mean, that's the way it was. They forced me to do a couple things that the blitz will force you to do, but I found a way to fight through it and make a few good plays. You know, I wouldn't rate it on a scale of one to ten, but I know we won the ball game, and I feel very confident about that."

Linebacker Bernardo Harris: "To me, we're close to being a 7-and-0 team. (But) we're happy to be 5-and-2 and tied for the lead in the division."

Defensive tackle Bob Kuberski: "It was a learning experience. It was my first professional start and there's a lot different momentum than when you're coming in off the bench in the second quarter for a couple of plays -- you've got to play every play. The next time I start, I won't be so excited. l jumped offside on the first few series today, so I learned to settle down a little bit.

"I could probably name you ten plays off the top of my head that I wish I had back...Like I said, it was a learning experience."

Offensive Lineman Jeff Dellenbach (on his first appearance at guard in four years) "As long as you get the job done, you feel pretty good...There were times I wished things would have come a little quicker, that I could have done a little better. But that comes from playing together."

(on the value of the bye) "This is going to be an important week for us because we've had a tough seven weeks because of injuries."
