Green Bay vs. Detroit - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay
Regular Season - Packers Win 38-19
COACH HOLMGREN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS:
(on Roell Preston's 100-yard kick return) "The return team got in there, and they were mad. Because a lot of the same people just gave up the return (to Detroit for a touchdown on the previous play). Roell did a nice job cutting back. Michael Blair, who we brought up the last couple days, made that final block, and it was great. And, obviously, it was a great play in the game."
(on covering the Lions' kick return game) "It's a huge job. Detroit has a fine special teams coach and program, and we knew that coming into the game."
(on having Brett Favre as quarterback) "That's a good comfort zone. It's nice to have the best quarterback in football on your side. He has such a good grasp of what we're doing now."
(on Dorsey Levens' performance) "Considering he hasn't been here for very long, I think it's remarkable. He got bumped in the head a little bit, and I think part of that is he was fatigued. We had a little agreement going into the game: we decided that he would look at me, and I'd decide if I cared or not."
(on why Robert Brooks played a limited amount in the second half) "We thought his back might tighten up in the second half, so that was more of a planned decision."
(on Craig Newsome's play) "I think he did well. You're playing against Johnnie Morton and Herman Moore and that young fellow (Germane Crowell) they have from Virginia -- that's a formidable group."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on the kickoff team's performance) "I think as a kickoff coverage unit, we'd be disappointed. It's one of those things. It's not, 'We did OK..' It's either you do your job, or you don't do it. We'll go back to the drawing board and fix it. We had a lot of young guys out there the first time. Travis Jervey wasn't out there a lot, and he's one of our big guns."
DEFENSIVE END REGGIE WHITE:
(on how well the overall team played) "There wasn't any doubt. We figured we would turn the switch on."
(on LeRoy Butler's fumble recovery for a touchdown) "That was a big play. We did a good job stuffing him (Mitchell). We had good penetration, and LeRoy picked it up and ran it in."
LINEBACKER BRIAN WILLIAMS:
(on what the victory means to the Packers) "Everyone was talking like the end was coming to the Packers, so we were looking forward to this game, looking forward to a good start to the season, and I think we did that."
WIDE RECEIVER ANTONIO FREEMAN:
(on his 84-yard touchdown catch in the final two minutes) "I capped the drive off with a touchdown. We were able to spread the football around and give a lot of people a lot of touches, and kept their defense off-balance."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on 18-play drive in 3rd quarter) "Any time any team can get a drive of that size, it's an accomplishment. I know their defense was tired. But so were we. I started to cramp up a bit -- it was hot and humid. It was a long drive, guys were fighting and scratching. That drive had nothing to do with me. It was guys making some big plays. I can point out three or four plays, maybe more, of guys making extra effort. Offensive line opening holes. It was a total effort on that particular drive, and it was great to see."
(on the play of his receivers) "Any one of our guys can catch, and make something happen with it. As a quarterback, you realize you can use every one of them. You can take the plays and do a lot more with them than staring down one (receiver)."
(on his injury) "I fell on the ball. I'm not quite sure who fell on my back. But I just kind of bruised my ribs, or something like that."
(on how he felt after falling on the ball) "I didn't feel good, but I knew I could play. I knew I had one more touchdown in me. After that, I was ready to come out."
(on how he can improve) "I can complete every pass. I can always get better. That's what I'm paid to do: go out and play and make plays whenever I can."
RUNNING BACK DORSEY LEVENS:
(on his fatigue) "I don't know if I'll ever get up tomorrow morning. Whew. I thought they were going to ease me into the offense. I guess that's their definition of easing me into the offense."
(on coming out of the game) "When I wanted to come out, they relieved me. I had to get their attention. Sometimes it took a minute, but they finally saw me."
(on not being in football condition) "I think I felt that moreso in the second half, whereas last year I got stronger. My legs aren't really where they need to be as far as being in football condition and taking a pounding."
(on his timing) "It felt a little off. It felt a little strange. You gotta realize: the first time I've gotten hit since the Super Bowl was today. It was definitely a little awkward, the timing was not completely there. It wasn't bad -- it wasn't like awful."
(on his facial inuries) "My eye's fine. My whole face is red. It was like I got into a fight with somebody out there."
