Green Bay vs. Carolina - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay

Regular Season - Packers Win 37-30

COACH HOLMGREN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS:
(on the performance and the result) "I hope I don't have too many of these. This was quite a game. I'm sure it was entertaining for the fans and the people who were watching the game. But, oh boy, it's tough on a coach, believe me. And I'm sure Dom (Carolina head coach Dom Capers) is saying the same thing."

"But we won the football game 'We're 4-and-0' And that was one of our goals to come out of the chute this year. And to win two games in a row on the road - that's a good thing in this league. So now we're tired and we get on the plane and go home."

(on whether the game had reminded of last year's 41-38 shoot-out loss in Indianapolis) "Well, no. I thought in Indianapolis we were pretty sharp on offense. Today, though we scored a lot of points, I thought we did a lot of sloppy things. In Indianapolis, we were pretty good that day."

"Turnovers' we got off to such a bad start. It was 10 to nothing before you could blink. And then we come back and we tied it at halftime. But any time I thought we got to the point where one more field goal, one more something would kind of put the game away, we turned the ball over, or fumble, or something...or there was a penalty. We were just a little bit sloppy. And I think both teams battled their hearts out today. And, at the end, they were pretty exhausted."

(on Brett Favre 'needing to have a big game for lack of a running game') "Well, yeah. He has to have a big day. For us to win, he has to play well. I mean, that's no secret. That's always been the way it's been. And we try to help him a little bit with the running game. And we tried today. But he made some great plays. But he threw a couple picks that he'd like to have back as well."

(on Favre having thrown more than 35 passes - 45 to be exact) "That's too many. It's too many...But we won. That may be the first time we have thrown over 35 passes and have won a football game. So he had to do it. I think the receivers, all in all, made some nice plays. Derrick Mayes showed up big today. And we needed that. Now we've just got to figure out a way to get our running game going."

(on the running game) "We're still struggling there. But, you know, we're going to stick with it and keep at it. And Raymont (Harris) - the more he carries the ball, the more he's involved in our running game, the more he'll recognize things, and recognize our blocking schemes. So we'll stick with it."

(on Roell Preston's "return" performance) "I think he was more confident. I think, all in all, he played a much better football game. And he needed to do that. That's not an easy thing - to be a punt return man or a kickoff return man. It's one of the tougher things a player has to do. He did not have a good game last week. He knew that. And he came out today and I think he did much, much better."

(on the penalties) "There were too many flags...in the whole game, period. And it was a long, long football game. We had been penalized heavily in the preseason and we had gotten over that. I think we were one of the fewest penalized teams in the regular season. But today was a little too wild for me."

(on Robert Brooks' situation) "I think he'll be the same. Without a doubt, the ongoing thing is he'll have some soreness in his back. He played another fine football game, in my opinion. But we have a plan of not practicing him too much and trying to cool that thing off."

(on Derrick Mayes' performance) "It was his biggest game and we needed it. That play he made for the last touchdown was a beautiful catch and run after it. He has great ability that way - he really does. His thing over the years has been that he hasn't been able to stay healthy. And so my hope is that he can continue to contribute, particularly the way we're playing Robert (Brooks) and Mayes at the one position."

(on the outstanding performance of rookie Vonnie Holliday in his return to the Carolinas) "I couldn't be happier for him. He was excited coming here. In fact, I made him special teams captain this week, even though all he is on is the field goal-block team. But he's a great young man and he's off to a fine start on his career."

THE PLAYER PERSPECTIVE:
Brett Favre (on having started slowly): "Yeah, we did. I think everyone who watched the game saw that. But we had a lot of big plays. Guys stepped up and made the plays when they had the opportunity. I tip my hat to Carolina - they're a good football team. Their defense is good. We knew that coming in and they made some plays, but we found a way to make enough. And that was the difference."

(on Mayes having 'stepped up') "When somebody goes down - Robert went down - Derrick stepped up and made some huge plays for us. And Chewy (tight end Mark Chmura)...One week it may be Antonio (Freeman) and one week it may be Chewy, one week it may be Derrick - or Robert. Who knows? Bill Schroeder...Guys step up and they know I'll throw it to 'em...I've told you a million times - I'll throw it to 'em. It doesn't matter who it is. You know, 'Get open and make a play.' And that's what we did today."

"They've got a good team. (But) we're 4-and-0. There's room for improvement. That's a good thing. You know, if we were playing our best football and were barely escaping, there's a sense of urgency to get better. Not that there isn't, but we found a way to win - not playing our best. I had a couple of balls I wish I had back. But we found a way to win the ball game and that's the most important thing."

(on whether there had been 'a sense of urgency' when the Packers were down 10-0) "No, I knew we'd be OK. I didn't want to be down 10-nothing - I don't thing anybody expected to be down 10-nothing - but we felt like we could come back. And I don't think anyone on our team was that worried."

(on the Panthers' blitzing defense) "They got to me several times. But we made some huge plays. And I've always said, against the blitz, you know, it's the truth - you win some and you lose some...And when you make a couple of big plays that end up in touchdowns, that may be the difference. They got to me a couple times, made some plays. But in the long haul, I don't how many times they blitzed, but if we win 50 percent of them - not even 50 - we win the battle."

(on the three interceptions he threw) "It's pretty hard not to catch those - I threw 'em right at 'em."

Derrick Mayes (on his three-touchdown receptions): "I don't think I've ever had a three-touchdown game. Back in peewee (football), I think I had one. But I didn't have such an audience watching. I probably just had my parents watching when I scored the three touchdowns."

(on the game) "It was kind of crazy because it took so long. All four quarters, we kept pounding and Carolina kept coming back...And it was a little too close for comfort."

(on whether he is aware of his importance to the team, 'given Robert Brooks' status) "First of all, I think I had a good week of preparation - and a lot of encouragement from Robert. I've always had encouragement from Robert - ever since I came in the league. He was the first guy to ever take me under his wing, so this is a kind of a tribute to him. Every time I go out there and try to make a play, I do it because of a lot of the things he showed me. Those touchdowns you saw today were some things that he showed me down through the years. So I've got to pay my respect to him."

(on whether fellow receiver Bill Schroeder is 'pushing you') "I think all of the receivers push each other. It's not just one thing. Everyone pushes each other out there. I push Free (Antonio Freeman), Free pushes Robert...Bill pushes me...Corey Bradford pushes Bill and Roell Preston pushes all of us. And I think that's the most important thing...We work hard every day. When one goes down, another guy comes and steps in. "

(on what he had seen in the Carolina coverage in order to pile up the yards he did) "Well, you know, you live and die by the zone blitz. And when you get some guys dropping, and there are unexpected drops, it's about finding those holes, and that's something that the Carolina offensive coordinator (Gil Haskell) taught me when he was in Green Bay, so I just kind of using some of those things that he gave me."

Vonnie Holliday (on his return to the Carolinas): "I've been looking forward to this game for a long time to come back to Carolina in front of a Carolina crowd, and my relatives and friends. What was important today was coming out with a victory. It was an emotional win, but it was a win, and that's the important thing."
