Green Bay vs. San Francisco - Postgame Quotes - Green Bay

Regular Season - Packers Win 36-22

HEAD COACH MIKE HOLMGREN:

(on safety LeRoy Butler's sack that made Young fumble) "That was a great sack. Usually in those situations, because the offensive linemen are pass-protecting, you get the ball. We didn't get it. So while it was a great play I don't think it was the great play in the second half. LeRoy is a force, and he played a fine ballgame tonight."

(on the fast start in the game) "Sometimes I've been involved in games where you get off to such a great start and you kind of settle back a little bit. I don't think we were guilty of that, but you knew San Francisco was going to come back."

(on the long touchdowns to Freeman against CB Marquez Pope) "Well I think Marquez is a fine player, a very physical player at the line of scrimmage, and they ask him to do that. If you can release and get off clean, then (safety) Merton (Hanks) has some ground to cover. He's very good at it. The key really is getting someone down the center of the field to hold the safety in a little bit so you have the chance to get one in behind. They were two different plays. Brett threw a beautiful pass both times."

(on running back Travis Jervey) "He is getting better each week, as he should. He's getting more experience. I think tonight he made better decisions. Tonight, Travis certainly ran hard."

(on the team's late surge in the game) "I like how this team is hanging in there."

"(Wide receiver Bill) Schroeder has a sprained ankle."

(on Brett Favre's three intereceptions) "That's not good, and he knows that. We kind of beat that to death a week ago. Right now we have to throw a lot and take a few more chances than normal since the running game is not what it should be. What we have to do is eliminate the bad ones. When you throw the ball, there's a certain risk involved. He's a great football player. We're going to keep doing what we do -- he's going to keep playing how he plays. And if we keep having the results we had tonight, I take it."

(on Reggie White's play) "Reg, he's playing more than I thought he would this season -- he feels pretty good. He wants to beg off of practice a bit more now, and I don't let him. He reminds me of the deal we made that he wouldn't have to practice very hard, and I remind him that I forgot that -- I don't think he has that on tape. He's playing like a much younger player right now."

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR FRITZ SHURMUR:

(on the secondary's play) "People have been taking shots at our cover guys to the point where they could have gone into the tank and said, 'Nobody's got any confidence in us.' Everybody writes about it, everybody talks about it. Maybe because they've given up some big plays, they've got some justification in it. I don't think they have. But I think what happened with those guys and with (secondary coach) Bob Valesente, the guy that coached them, they stayed positive, they kept working their a-- off, and I thought they had a hell of a game tonight. Now, a lot of that nine-sack thing was what was going on behind them."

(on new cornerback Rod Smith) "I thought he did a hell of a job. He was here one week, and I didn't have to pull off one coverage call because he was in the game."

(on whether his game plan made the difference) "I don't ever like to think what we did coaching-wise made the difference in this game. I think the difference in this game was the way our guys played, and they played better than their guys, and they're a very good football team."

(on Young's fumble) "I think there was a little bit of indecision there. Our line kind of took over. He pulled the ball down, he thought he had something and he didn't from a coverage standpoint. And by then, it was a little late."

"Anybody starts to talk about Reggie White, look at him in big games. Look at him in the Super Bowl game we won, look at him in this game, and tell me this isn't the best player to play that position in a long time."

"I agree with Mike (Holmgren), I don't think any one game makes or breaks a season. But this was a big game for us."

DEFENSIVE END KEITH McKENZIE:

(on sacking Steve Young nine times) "It was great. We knew we had to get after him, because once he gets running he can make a lot of things happen. Once we got him chasing around, I think we got into his head a little bit."

DEFENSIVE END REGGIE WHITE:

(on the defensive line's play in the fourth quarter) "We just came off the ball, particularly when we scored (and took the late lead), we knew we were the ones that had to shut them down. We did a good enough job making sure we got a good push up the middle, and we stayed in our lanes."

(on his play) "I wanted to go out my last year on top, and God has given me the strength to do it."

"Before the game I went up to LeRoy (Butler) and I went up to Brett Favre and said, 'Us three have got to have big games, and if we do that, we'll win.' And that's what happened."

QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:

(on his two touchdowns to Antonio Freeman) "The first one was an audible. He adjusted his route. It was supposed to be a quick out, and if it's bump-and-run, he runs a fade route. And he just got in the crease. The second one was a 'go.' It's what we call just a 'double-go.' He released inside, and I knew on that particular play I had to drill it instead of laying it up."

(on his interceptions) "The one that kind of floated up, I had Robert (Brooks) on a corner route and tried to throw a drill-shot to him, and the ball just floated out of my hand. I had him open -- that's the frustrating thing. The one before halftime, I had Antonio in the second window in the slant, and (Lee) Woodall turned inside and made the play. The other one, I never saw (Tim) McDonald, I think it was. A quick slant to Tyrone (Davis) underneath -- just talking to Chewy (Mark Chmura), he said he ran the wrong route. Gotta find something to blame it on."

WIDE RECEIVER ANTONIO FREEMAN:

(on his touchdowns) "We knew we were going to test their defensive backs early. In the past I've had some success against Marquez Pope. I came off the line, he opened his hips one way to me, I pushed him, I got him to turn, I just skipped him inside. Brett looked to the right a little, which froze Merton Hanks just enough to get the seams, and as I got open it was a perfect ball, and we got off to the early start."

(on the Packers' defense) "Our defense always rises to the challenge, and today they did. They put some pressure on Steve Young, they minimized what Jerry Rice could do offensively, and we knew those would be keys coming into the game."

(on what this win means to the team) "We knew we needed this one, hitting the road for a three-game road trip. We knew we had to come out, execute, minimize our turnovers and get out to an early lead. We knew that if we could get out early on them, we knew that would be key."
