Green Bay vs. New York Giants
11/15/98 - Packers win 37-3
 |
| Tyrone Davis |
Quarterback Brett Favre hit tight end Tyrone Davis for two touchdowns
and running back Darick Holmes rushed for 111 yards and a score as the
Green Bay Packers played their most complete game of the season and
throttled the New York Giants, 37-3, at Giants Stadium.
Favre completed 21 passes for 267 yards to eight different receivers.
Holmes, the first 100-yard Packer rusher this season, showed speed and
excellent vision, read his blocks well and made great cuts. With a big
lead in the second half, Holmes helped the Packers run the clock down,
reminiscent of Dorsey Levens' same role last year.
Tyrone Davis caught two touchdowns, both in the first half. His first
score came on the team's third drive. Favre hiked the ball on
third-and-two from the New York 2 and immediately threw a lob pass to
the flat, and Davis leapt up and took it away from linebacker Marcus
Buckley for the 7-0 lead.

Davis scores! |
Davis has the size of a tight end (6'4", 252 pounds) and the speed of a
receiver, and used his mismatch throughout the game to make big plays.
It was Favre's 200th career touchdown pass in just 107 games over his
eight seasons in the NFL. Favre is the second-fastest quarterback in
league history to the two-century mark (Dan Marino, 89 games).
Favre also became the second-fastest passer in league history to reach
25,000 career yards when he completed a short pass to receiver Antonio
Freeman in the first quarter.
The Packers offense played its best game of the year, riddling the
Giants with two-tight-end and four-receiver sets. They rolled up 433
total yards, including 169 yards on the ground, thanks to improved
running from Holmes (27 carries, 112 yards), Raymont Harris (10, 33) and
fullback William Henderson (4, 21). Favre often went to the third or
fourth reads on pass plays, and also threw to his backs, something he
hadn't done very much since Dorsey Levens broke his leg. Holmes caught
two passes and provides an inviting target because, like Levens, he has
a rare combination of size, speed and good hands.
The defense also rebounded from last week's disappointing performance in
Pittsburgh, sacking Giants quarterbacks Danny Kanell and Kent Graham
five times and creating three turnovers. The Giants, who rushed for 159
yards against Dallas last week, managed just 64 yards.
The Packers held New York to 127 yards total offense. The Giants were
only 2-for-11 on third downs. The Packers secondary didn't give up a
big pass, tackled much better after the catch and LeRoy Butler had two
interceptions.
Rookie end Vonnie Holliday led the team with six tackles and added two
sacks and a pass defensed.
Unheralded linebacker Brian Williams had just two tackles, but both were
key plays in the open field in the first half.
Reggie White's two sacks gave him 14 on the year. He needs seven more
in the remaining six games to tie his all-time single-season mark.

| Packers' Defense |
In the second quarter, safety LeRoy Butler, in man-to-man coverage,
stepped in front of a down-and-in route and intercepted his first pass
on the day--the first interception Kanell had thrown in 124 passes.
Favre marched the offense down the field and kicker Ryan Longwell
connected on a 39-yarder. The Packers led 10-0.
Favre then hit Davis for another score, this time with Davis lined up
next to the right tackle in the two-tight end set. Davis slipped under
the middle, beat a linebacker, Favre threw a laser to him on the
numbers, and Davis was gone, out-running the entire Giants secondary for
a 60-yard score. It was Favre's 19th touchdown this season. Packers
17, Giants 0.

Then, for the second time in as many games, end Reggie White stripped
the ball from the opposing quarterback and end Keith McKenzie recovered
it.
Longwell then hit a 29-yard field goal to put the Packers up 20-3 at
half time.
After returner Roell Preston brought the second half kickoff back 66
yards, Longwell hit another field goal from 31 yards out to increase the
lead to 20.
The Packers came storming back again on the following possession.
Darrick Holmes ran well, including a key first down pickup in which he
got the corner. He also made a tough catch to extend the drive, and
Henderson punched the ball into the end zone on the ground to give Green
Bay a 30-3 advantage.

The Packers (7-3) now trail the Minnesota Vikings (9-1) by two games and
head to the Metrodome for a battle that could decide the NFC Central
Division title. Green Bay, Dallas and San Francisco all have 7-3
records and are tied for third in the NFC behind Minnesota and the
Atlanta Falcons (8-2).
