Green Bay vs. Minnesota
11/22/98 - Packers lose 28-14
As the old saying goes, you can't turn the ball over, commit
penalties and expect to win.
The Green Bay Packers spotted the Minnesota Vikings 10 points off turnovers,
sputtered with six offensive line penalties in the fourth quarter and
fell to the Vikings 28-14 before a boisterous Metrodome crowd.
The Vikings (10-1) now are now three games ahead of the Packers (7-4)
and own the tie-breaker after sweeping Green Bay this season. Barring a
complete Vikings collapse, the Packers now will have to get into the
playoffs via a wild card berth.

| Brett Favre |
Packers quarterback Brett Favre courageously rallied his team in the
fourth quarter, shaking off a dislocated finger to scramble and make
plays, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tyrone Davis with
7:31 left in the game. It was Davis' second of the game.

That pulled the Packers to within 6 points, 20-14. The momentum had
swung back to Green Bay.
But the Vikings struck back. Quarterback Randall Cunningham hit wide
receiver Randy Moss for a 49-yard touchdown, and Cunningham ran in the
two-point conversion with 3:17 remaining.
The Vikings led 28-14 and never looked back.
The Packers won the time of possession battle by four minutes. But they
couldn't overcome the early turnovers.
On the first drive, Packers quarterback Brett Favre scrambled, hit the
ball on his leg and fumbled. Vikings defensive tackle Tony Williams
recovered at the Green Bay 26 yard line. The Packers defense held on
three straight plays, but Gary Anderson kicked a 35-yard field goal.
Minnesota led 3-0.
With the Packers driving into Minnesota territory, the Vikings defense
stepped up a second time. This time, cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock jumped
in front of a down-and-out route by receiver Bill Schroeder at the
Minnesota 42, picked off the ball, and ran it in for a touchdown.
Minnesota led, 10-0.

| Tyrone Davis |
Favre and running back Darick Holmes brought the Pack back with a
touchdown drive. Favre attempted seven passes and hit six different
receivers, including tight end Tyrone Davis, who caught a pass in the
right flat and broke tackles in the secondary to score the 12-yard
touchdown. Davis now has 10 scores this season.

But the Vikings offense answered. On a key third-and-17 play, Packers
safety LeRoy Butler blitzed, leaving receiver Robert Tate uncovered, and
Tate gained 17 to extend the drive. Later, on third-and-one, fullback
Leroy Hoard ran off-tackle to the left for 36 yards and a first down.
A key play in the game was in the first half, when Packers cornerback
Craig Newsome had an interception in his hands, but was leveled by his
own man, Packers safety Darren Sharper. Newsome dropped the ball and
was shaken up on the play. He also lacerated his knee on the turf so
bad he required stitches and didn't return. That forced the Packers to
use Sharper to cover Vikings receivers one-on-one and gave defensive
coordinator Fritz Shurmur no choice but to play Mike Prior and Pat
Terrell at safety in his place. The Packers had been excited that
cornerback Rod Smith allowed Sharper to stay at his more natural safety
position where he is better equipped to make plays.
Quarterback Randall Cunningham threw the 4-yard touchdown to wideout
Cris Carter, who got away with illegally pushing-off on Sharper to get
open. After 10 plays and 76 yards, the Vikings led 20-7 at halftime.
The Packers ran the ball well in the first half, but ended the game with
just 53 yards rushing. Included in that number is the three times Favre
was sacked for minus-26 yards.
Meanwhile, Vikings' star running back Robert Smith was held to 27 yards
rushing, but Minnesota was still able to pound away for 94 yards on the
ground.
Packers star receiver Antonio Freeman was held to just three catches for
46 yards. Holmes caught five passes for 50 yards, and Bill Schroeder
led the Packers with seven receptions for 93 yards.
Cornerback Tyrone Williams played well, intercepting his third pass of
the season.
The Packers return home from their three-game road stretch to play the
Philadelphia Eagles at 3:15 CST (Wisconsin time) on FOX. The Eagles
lost today to the New York Giants, 20-0, a team the Packers defeated
37-3 last week.
