Green Bay vs. Miami
9/2/99 - Packers Win 25-17
 |
| Bill Schroeder dives over two defenders into the endzone to get the Packers on the board. |
The Green Bay Packers held the Miami Dolphins without a touchdown for the entire length of the game, Thursday and became only the third Packer team in 32 years to complete a clean sweep of its preseason foes, en route to a 25-17 victory, before 59,810 fans at Lambeau Field.
The game began with each team being forced to punt on its initial drive, but Packers quarterback Brett Favre was intercepted by Dolphin cornerback Sam Madison on Green Bay's second drive of the evening. After finishing a relatively short night, by going 1-5 (for five yards), Favre was replaced by backup Matt Hasselbeck, who entered the game with an unheard-of 140.7 quarterback rating. On the following drive, Dolphin safety Brock Marion blocked a punt by newly acquired punter Chris Hanson, leading to a two-point safety for the visitors.
On the ensuing kickoff, Miami deep man John Avery fumbled the kickoff, picked up the loose ball and fumbled once more, enabling Packer Chris Akins to recover the ball at the Miami 10-yard line. The play was all for not, as Hasselbeck threw his first interception of the year on the following sequence.
Miami then countered with an 11-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in a 31-yard field goal, the first of five field goals on the night, for Dolphin place kicker Olindo Mare.
After another series for the Green and Gold ended in a punt by Hanson, Miami stormed back with a 12-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 26-yard try by Mare that encompassed almost six minutes and pushed the lead to 8-0.
But Miami was not done yet, as they countered with a field goal from 41 yards out at the 9:08 mark of the second quarter. Then, two plays into Miami's sixth drive of the night, Packers linebacker Anthony Davis intercepted a Damon Huard pass at the Miami 32-yard line and returned it to the 26. Three plays later, Hasselbeck came on to throw an electrifying 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bill Schroeder, in which the receiver dove head-over-heals in order to stretch into the end zone, thus making the score at the half; Miami 11, Green Bay 8.
The Dolphins began the second half right where they left off, as another long drive - this on being 10 plays, 44 yards and 5:52 - led to a field goal by Mare, this time from 40 yards out.
The first drive of the second half for the boys from Titletown was a hint of what was to come in the second half, as the Packers drove 69 yards in 9 plays to score their second touchdown of the night. This score being an 18-yard strike from Hasselbeck to running back Basil Mitchell. The touchdown pass was Hasselbeck's eighth of the preseason, with his only interception of 1999 coming earlier in the night.
At this point the Packers took a lead that they would not relinquish. As third-string quarterback Aaron Brooks entered the game near the end of the third quarter, he promptly used only four plays to lead to Packers to yet another score. Again, Mitchell was the recipient as he caught a dump-off pass and raced 45 yards to the end zone.
Instant replay also played a part in tonight's game as Dolphin kick returner Kio Sanford ran back the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, only to have the score overturned when the Green Bay coaching staff noticed Sanford's foot stepping on the sideline as he raced by them.
The final scoring chance for the Dolphins came on their fourth drive of the half, as third-stringer Craig Erickson found second-year receiver Larry Shannon on a 56 yard bomb, setting up Mare's final score of the night, a 32-yard field goal.
Packers kicker Ryan Longwell added a field goal from 42 yards out at the 1:55 mark of the fourth quarter, to push the final margin to Packers 25, Dolphins 17.
The Green Bay Packers launch their 79th National Football League regular season against the Oakland Raiders in Lambeau Field Sunday, September 12, with kickoff set for 12 noon, (CDT).
