Green Bay vs. Denver
10/17/99 - Packers Lose 31-10
 |
| Linebacker Brian Williams continued his stellar play this season, recording 10 tackles, an interception and a pass defensed against the Broncos. He currently leads the Packers with 55 tackles and 2 interceptions in 5 games. |
The two-time defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos (2-4) gave the
National Football League a collective wake-up call. It is said that the
worst time to confront an animal is when it is wounded. Wounded would
be an understatement for the Denver Broncos' condition when they faced
the Green Bay Packers (3-2), as they submitted an injury report of
excess of 20 players, among those injured were All-Pros Terrell Davis
and Shannon Sharpe, joining them on the list was quarterback Bubby
Brister and linebacker John Mobley.
The Packers fell victim to the big play once again, as the Broncos were
able to connect on four plays over 20 yards, two of which were over 75
yards. The Broncos were also able to possess the ball for over 45
minutes, limiting the Packers potent offense to under 15 minutes of
possession. Add those up, and you come to a 31-10 sum.
The Packers started with possession of the ball, and the offense looked
poised for success after quarterback Brett Favre connected with wide
receiver Bill Schroeder on the first play for 18 yards, but the drive
stalled and Louie Aguiar was called upon for the first of seven punts.
Aguiar got himself back on track, averaging 51.1-yards per punt.
The Broncos opening possession resulted in a first and goal situation
from the Packer 2-yard line. The Packer defense stood tall and denied
the Broncos the end zone. On the third play, Anthony Davis was called
for pass interference, rewarding the Broncos with another first and goal
from the 1-yard line. Once again, the Packer defense was up to the
challenge as Bernardo Harris made two tackles en route to forcing the
Broncos to kick a field goal.
Toward the end of the second quarter, the Broncos still leading by a 3-0
margin, the Broncos were driving. Brian Griese looked to pass to
running back, Olandis Gary, but Brian Williams stepped in and
intercepted the pass. He not only thwarted the Bronco drive, but he
started the Packer drive returning the pass 60 yards to the Bronco
29-yard line. Once again, the Packers offense was unable to muster
anything, and Ryan Longwell knotted the score with a 50-yard field goal.
The Broncos opened the second half scoring when Griese found Ed
McCaffrey in the back of the end zone.
After the teams traded punts, the Packers gained possession at their own
20-yard line. Favre quickly found Antonio Freeman for 9 yards. Favre
then hit Corey Bradford along the sideline for a 54-yard gain. Favre
then hit Tyrone Davis near the goal line. The Broncos thought that
Davis did not catch the ball in bounds, and challenged the call. The
call on the field stood, a reception at the Bronco 1 yard line. Dorsey
Levens wasted no time, as he took the handoff into the end zone,
knotting the score at 10.
On the Broncos first play from scrimmage on their ensuing possession,
Griese was pressured out of the pocket. He found Ed McCaffrey on the
sideline who battled Darren Sharper's tackle attempts and managed to get
into the end zone, breaking the tie 10-7.
A 64-yard Aguiar punt pinned the Broncos inside their own 10-yard line.
Facing a third and eight, the Broncos used a trick play. They lined
tight end, Byron Chamberlain, up in the backfield behind Griese. Griese
looked as if he would run around the right end and was caught by a
Packer defender, but instead shoveled the ball to Chamberlain who ran
for 88 yards to the Packer 2-yard line before Scott McGarrahan tracked
him down. The drive resulted in a touchdown run by Griese.
The Packers defense was led once again by Bernardo Harris with 13
tackles, and Brian Williams with 10 tackles.
The Packers will try to stay above .500 next Sunday when they travel to
Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA against the San Diego Chargers.
Kickoff is slated for 3:05 Wisconsin time.
