Green Bay vs. Chicago
11/7/99 - Packers Lose 14-13
 |
| TE Tyrone Davis had 3 catches for 24 yards and a touchdown on Sunday against the Bears. |
The Green Bay Packers (4-4) once again relied on the last play of the game
to win, and unlike previous attempts, fell short. With the final seconds
ticking off the clock, Ryan Longwell attempted a 28-yard field goal, which was blocked by Bryan Robinson, and the Chicago Bears (4-5) escaped with a narrow 14-13 win at Lambeau Field in front of 59,867 fans.
The Packer defense started quickly, forcing the Bears to punt on the opening
possession. Allowing the Packer offense to take the field.
On his first snap from center, Frank Winters, Brett Favre broke Ron
Jaworski's record of consecutive games started at the quarterback position
with his 117 start. He started quickly, completing his first pass to tight
end, Tyrone Davis.
On the Green and Gold's next possession they were able to effectively move
the ball down the field, with a mix of running and passing plays. Dorsey Levens ran for 8 yards, while Favre threw for 30 yards setting up a 37-yard field goal by Longwell.
On the ensuing Bear's possession, Glyn Milburn ran a draw play from the
shotgun for 49 yards to score the go ahead touchdown.
With their third quarterback, Jim Miller, at the helm, the Bears' offense
stalled. Miller was intercepted in Bear territory by Mike McKenzie. However, the Packers were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as Favre was intercepted in the end zone by Chris Hudson.
Late in the second quarter, Darren Sharper was able to intercept Miller, setting the offense up just insde Chicago territory at the 49-yard line. The Packers were able to punch the ball in the end zone. Favre used tight end, Tyrone Davis against the smalled Bear defensive backs, to efficiently move the ball down the field, capping the drive with a 7-yard touchdown strike to Davis with 35 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing Bear possession, Miller was once again picked off, this time
by Antuan Edwards on a desperation attempt to the end zone.
The Packers opening possession stalled when the on field called was challenged, then reversed. On fourth down, Favre threw to Jeff Thomason for enough yards for the first down. Thomason was initially ruled to have fumbled the ball out of bounds, with Green Bay retaining possession. After Chicago head coach, Dick Jauron, challenged the call, it was decided that Thomason did not have possession at all, and the pass was ruled incomplete, giving possession to the Bears.
The Bears looked poised to score a touchdown behind solid running by Curtis
Enis. However, the Bears went to the well one too many times. Enis ran to
the Packer 10-yard line, when Keith McKenzie ripped the ball out his Enis' clutches, he recovered the fumble, giving the Packers possession deep in their own territory.
On the Bears next possession, they were able to finish the drive as Miller found Bobby Engram for a 6-yard touchdown pass, giving Chicago a 14-10 lead.
The Packers answered with a 26-yard field to cut the margin to 14-13, but that was as close as the Packers would get.
Antonio Freeman led all receivers with 8 catches and with 71 yards. Favre finished with 27 completions on 41 attempts for 267 yards and one touchdown.
The Packer defense, once again, was able to create turnovers, with three
interceptions and one fumble recovery. Sharper led Packer tacklers with 11.
The Packers will try to stay above .500 on Sunday when they travel to Dallas
to take on the Cowboys, kickoff is slated for 3:15.
