Green Bay vs. San Francisco
11/29/99 - Packers Win 20-3
 |
| DT Billy Lyon gets in QB Steve Stentstrom's face during the Packers defeat of the Niners. |
After dropping three in a row, the Green Bay Packers (6-5) defeated the San
Francisco 49ers (3-8) by a score of 20-3 in a rain soaked 3Com Park in San
Francisco, California for the Green and Gold's second consecutive win and
the 49ers seventh straight loss.
Once again the Packers were facing demons. Head coach, Ray Rhodes, had not won on Monday Night Football before, neither had the Pack since the 1997 season. Both of those streaks came to a crashing stop.
On their second drive, the 49ers drove to the Packers' 22-yard line. Steve
Stentstrom threw for the back corner of the end zone for J.J. Stokes, but
LeRoy Butler stepped in front and intercepted the pass. After falling behind 3-0 on a Wade Richey 35-yard field goal.
The field goal turned into the wake-up call the Packers needed as Brett
Favre engineered a 7 play, 80-yard drive mixing his receivers well. Favre
completed passes to tight ends Jeff Thomason and Tyrone Davis before hitting Corey Bradford for a 13-yard touchdown pass. The drive was set up by a 48-yard pass interference penalty on San Francisco.
The Packer defense forced the 49ers to punt on the ensuing possession. This
time the Packers used the run to move the ball on the San Francisco defense
and Dorsey Levens accrued 20 of his 56 yards on the drive. Favre also hit Antonio Freeman for 16 yards on the drive.
Once again the defense forced a 49er punt by containing running back Charlie
Garner. Favre varied his receivers hitting William Henderson, Bill Schroeder and Levens out of the backfield. Ryan Longwell culminated the drive with a 23-yard field goal.
On the final drive of the half, Vonnie Holliday batted one pass and sacked Stentstrom on the final play.
On their second drive of the second half, the Packers efficiently moved the
ball down the field used a variety of passing plays. Favre methodically
dissected the 49er defense moving the offense down the field. Tyrone Davis
lined up in the slot, and was not accounted for by the defense. Favre
alertly noticed the situation, quickly snapped the ball and hit the tight
end for a 10-yard touchdown pass.
In the fourth quarter, Longwell added a 22-yard field goal making the score
20-3.
Anthony Davis led the way for the Packer defense with 6 tackles. Darren
Sharper had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery for the Green and Gold.
The Packers return to division play on Sunday, as they travel to Soldier
Field to take on the Chicago Bears. Game time is slated for noon.
