Green Bay vs. Carolina
12/12/99 - Packers Lose 33-31
 |
| Keith McKenzie ran back an interception, 18 yards for a touchdown. It was his second touchdown in two weeks. |
The Green Bay Packers (7-6) have won three games in the last minute, their
luck ran out against the Carolina Panthers (6-7). With the final seconds
ticking off the clock, Steve Beuerlein ran a quarterback draw from the
5-yard line to defeat the Packers 33-31 in front of 59,869 fans in Lambeau
Field.
The scoring was back and forth for the majority of the contest. Neither
defense proved to be consistently effective in stopping the opposing
offense.
The Panthers opened the scoring with a 20-yard field goal by John Kasay.
This followed what appeared to be an interception return of 101 yards by
Darren Sharper which was negated by a Packer penalty.
On the following Panther drive, Beuerlein dropped back in the pocket, just
as he was going to release the ball, Santana Dotson hit his arm jarring the
ball into the air. Keith McKenzie was in the right place at the right time, caught the ball in the air and returned it the remaining 18 yards for the touchdown. The touchdown was McKenzie's second score in as many weeks making him the only Packer to score two defensive touchdowns in one season twice as he had accomplished the same feat last season. Nine other Packers have scored two defensive touchdowns in one season.
The ensuing Panther drive was stopped by Beuerlein's fumble which was
recovered by Cletidus Hunt, Hunt's first career fumble recovery. However the Packers were unable to capitalize on the miscue and were forced to punt.
The Panthers then drove 80 yards in 10 plays with Patrick Jeffers catching a
35-yard touchdown pass from Beuerlein. Jeffers was the beneficiary of a
jarring block on Sharper by Donald Hayes.
The Packers wasted no time responding to the score. Basil Mitchell started
the drive with a 12-yard run up the middle. Then Favre found Mitchell for a
5-yard pick-up. Mitchell then carried the ball for no gain, fumbled, both
he and Sean Gilbert recovered the ball simultaneously, allowing Green Bay to
retain possession. Favre then hit Bill Schroeder for a 26-yard pick-up. Three Mitchell runs traversed 10 yards, making the line of scrimmage the Panther 19-yard line. Favre then found Antonio Freeman in the back corner
of the end zone for a touchdown.
The Panthers started the second half quickly. Michael Bates returned the
opening kickoff 68 yards to the Packer 38-yard line. Then Beuerlein hit
Jeffers with a lob pass over Sharper's head for a touchdown and a 17-14
lead.
Once again, the Packer offense fought back. Favre found Mitchell for a
20-yard gain. Mitchell then carried the ball for 6 yards. De'Mond Parker
then rushed for 5 yards. Favre hit Schroeder with a 9-yard pass. Then
Favre's pass protection broke down and Kevin Greene pressured Favre. Favre
was able to juke the defender and run for a 2-yard gain. A screen pass to
William Henderson advanced the Packers 19 yards. Favre then hit Freeman for
6 yards, the pass eclipsed the 30,000-yard mark for Favre, making him the
third fastest to attain that goal as Favre accomplished the feat in 126
games. Favre finished the drive hitting Donald Driver on a crossing route
for Driver's first career reception and touchdown.
But as was the case, the Panther offense responded as Beuerlein found Brian
Kinchen over the middle for a 26-yard touchdown, which saw Kinchen roll into
the end zone without being touched.
The Packers responded with a 40-yard field by Ryan Longwell to knot the
score at 24. The Panthers answered quickly with a 37-yard field goal by
Kasay.
Parker returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to the Packer 48-yard line.
After a few runs, Favre hit Schroeder for a 22-yard gain. Driver caught his
second pass for an 11-yard advance. Favre tried to hit Freeman in the end
zone. The pass was incomplete, but the official called pass interference on
the play, giving the Packers a new set of downs from the Panthers' 1-yard
line. The Packers gave the ball to William Henderson for a 1-yard leap to
regain the lead 31-27.
Beuerlein and the Panther offense stormed down the field to the Packer
8-yard line. Beuerlein scrambled and found Wesley Walls open in the end
zone for an apparent touchdown. However, after challenging the referee's
call, it was determined that the Panther quarterback had crossed the line of
scrimmage, forcing the Panthers into a fourth down situation. The
quarterback draw ensued and the Panthers won the game.
Favre finished the game with 26 completions in 38 attempts and 302 yards,
Favre's fifth time eclipsing the 300-yard plateau this season. Antuan
Edwards led the way for the defense with 7 tackles.
The Packers will try to stay above .500 as they travel to Minnesota for a
Monday Night contest against the Vikings, game time is scheduled for 8 pm.
