Green Bay Packers at Cleveland Browns - 08/11/01
Postgame Quotes - Cleveland
HEAD COACH BUTCH DAVIS
(On his first game) "It was good for us to go out there and be able to compete the way we did. The guys did a great job of going out there and getting everything going. Obviously, getting a win was a nice way to start out the year."
(On offense) "I was really proud of the way the offense came out and played after the first couple of possesions. They came out after they got some of the jitters out, and then got some things going on a couple of long scoring drives. I was really pleased with that. anytime you put together a long scoring drive, you have to feel good."
(On Tim Couch) "I thought Tim was brilliant out there tonight. He really showed a lot of poise and composure. He made some really good decisions that helped us get in the endzone. I am very pleased with the way Tim played."
(On the Defense) "The defense showed a lot of character, heart and determination by keeping Green Bay off of the scoreboard when they got pinned down by the blocked kick. It showed a lot of character to stand up and make those plays. That's what great defenses are made of, stopping teams inside the red zone."
QB TIM COUCH
(On the first play of the game) "To be honest, I was a little nervous. I thought I was going to throw the ball in the stands, and I over-compensated."
(On the 96-yard touchdown drive) "It was good to come back and do that after the first couple of drives. That is the type of offense we are capable of. We are going to be good offense. I knew we had to go out and get something going. We still have a lot of work to do, especially if you look at the first couple of drives."
(On the type of offense) "I feel real comfortable in this type of offense, and feel it is suited to my type of game. I've got a good grasp of what the system asks me to do, move the chains, and things like that."
(On touchdown pass) "We got Jamel lined up on a linebacker in the middle of the field. anytime we get those types of opportunities, we think he is going to win."
(On throwing slant passes) "I haven't thrown a slant pass in a few years. We were able to hit a few of them, it felt good."
RB BEN GAY
(on getting playing time late in game, and first NFL game) "This is a team game and everyone is going to get their looks at this point in the season. It was a great game and everybody had their fun, of course, because it's football. This is my first NFL football game under the lights and I had fun. It was an experience that can never be taken away from me. I had butterflies as soon as I came out of the tunnel, and at halftime, and until I went into the game. I had butterflies about as big as the Empire State building, but hey, I was still out there to try to take care of business."
DT GERARD WARREN
(on first NFL game) "It felt halfway decent, but there are some things we still need to tighten up as far as technique. I was tied up a little too much, and felt like there was a lot of holding going on up front so I need to use my hands more to get free."
(on if the NFL was what he expected it to be) "It was about what I expected. I wanted to come out here and see where I was and grade myself instead of just going through practice and the little scrimmage we had last week. There are still some things we need to work on that the coaches and I will discuss for next week."
WR KEVIN JOHNSON
(role in this year's offense) "I love my role in this offense. I think it gives me an opportunity to get the ball and help this team out. Quincy (Morgan) is going to contribute and help me become a better player. Once JaJuan (Dawson) and Dennis (Northcutt) get healthy, we will have a great receiving corps, with one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but now, we are still in the process of growing."
