Denver Broncos vs. Green Bay Packers - 08/20/01
Postgame Quotes - Green Bay
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on the hit on Freeman) "It was a hit that is obviously not encouraged by
the National Football League, but it happened and you move on. Hopefully
Freeman will be OK."
(on the defense) "I'm very excited about the way we tackled and hit people
today. I thought that was the highlight of the day; the emotion that they
played with and the intensity I thought was very good."
(on penalties) "I saw a lot of things that we have to clean up. We had way
too many penalties in this game as we did in the last game, and that
certainly is an issue that needs to be addressed by me and fixed soon."
(on the quarterback battle between Doug Pederson and Billy Joe Tolliver)
"These games are not the only thing that we'll make the evaluation on,
because I think to some degree it is unfair. It's also practice and so
forth. But they did what they had to do."
(on Doug Pederson) "I thought Doug did well: no turnovers, made some throws
that he had to make and got out of pressure when he had to get out of
pressure. He had a nice play to Donald Driver for a touchdown - moved his
feet, put the ball over a rusher on an option route over the middle and I
thought that was a big-time play."
(on the team forcing turnovers) "Boy, that's a new feeling for me - with
the injuries and us turning things over having been my nemesis here,
unfortunately. But it was nice to be ahead in the turnovers. Our defense
did a fine job of that, and I've got to credit the offense. I've told them
many times, if you don't turn the ball over, most of the time you'll win the
game."
QUARTERBACK DOUG PEDERSON:
(on his play) "I wanted to come back out and get that feel again of playing
and getting in the flow of the game. and by starting the third quarter,
when you come out fast and hopefully get some drives and go down the field."
(on how his arm feels) "It was a combination of good protection, the
receivers were making the right reads as far as their cuts and the timing of
things was good tonight. My arm has felt good during training camp and
things have kind of fallen into place for me this year."
(on wrapping up the second string job) "I hate to speculate but I don't
think tonight hurt, but we still have a lot of preseason to go. There're
two games left. You never know what will happen these next couple weeks -
injury situation, whatever. I don't speculate. I still have to improve and
play the next couple of weeks."
(on being a better quarterback since he first was with the Packers) "I
think the last couple of seasons for me - getting a chance to start, getting
a chance to play, see different that things that I hadn't been exposed to as
a backup, has made me a better quarterback."
(on how prepared for training camp) "I knew the position wasn't a lock. I
knew I had to come in here and compete. and I knew I had to show the
coaching staff that I was capable of being the backup here. So I just
prepared the same way but came in a little more eager, a little more
aggressive to win the spot."
DEFENSIVE END KABEER GBAJA-BIAMILA:
(on tonight's performance) "I feel that I played good today and all glory
to God. It just shows you that if you keep your eyes on the Lord, good
things happen."
(on the offensive holding penalties called on his opposing lineman) "I used
my speed around the corner, just getting to the quarterback. Maybe he
didn't anticipate the speed, but I have no idea. They always hold me - I
think every play they hold me. It has a lot to do with beating him around
the corner right out of his stance. I have to watch film, but I think I
clearly beat him around the corner so the natural tendency for an offensive
lineman is to hold."
(on his good play throughout the preseason) "Well if I keep my eyes on the
Lord, good thing will happen."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on his perfect, 5 for 5, field goal performance) "Well I'm happy. You
want to make everything that you try and I thought we were in a pretty good
rhythm. It worked good with Doug holding and Rob snaps great, and I'm
satisfied - I think we're making progress."
(on his kickoffs) "I think I kicked off well. I miss-hit a couple of them
as far as direction, but the hang times were all really good and distance
was fine. My leg is a little tired in the middle of training camp and
considering that, I think I kicked off real well. I was happy with a solid
game."
WIDE RECEIVER DONALD DRIVER:
(on his two big plays) "Everyday we sit out there on the practice field and
try to make plays and that's what we came out there in the second half to
try and do. That's what receivers try to everyday - make plays."
(on the quarterbacking situation) "Right now we have three great
quarterbacks. You know Brett is going to be here and right now Billy Joe
and Doug are fighting for the second spot. You know we're hoping all them
could be here - all four of them, but if not, they'll have to go their
separate ways and make the best of the opportunities presented to them."
(on his sideline catch) "I think Doug just threw a great pass. I had the
DB fenced inside and when I jumped and came down I just knew I still had a
little bit of ground to put my feet in and that's what I did."
(on his touchdown) "The coaches called us the option play. I just ran a
good route and beat the linebacker and Doug threw a nice little lob pass and
we scored after that."
CORNERBACK MIKE MCKENZIE:
(on his interception) "We're just out there working hard. We've got a
really attacking style of defense so we're out there to make plays and
attack."
(on his play after missing some camp) "anytime you're out there and you get
opportunities to make plays that's definitely what you want to do - help out
on defense. You want to get off the field, you don't want to be out there
long."
(on his overall performance) "It was OK. We're definitely going to make
some improvements so we'll look at the tapes and go from there."
