Green Bay (3-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the NFC Central Division with a 28-7 comeback victory over Carolina (1-2) in Charlotte.

Two major themes dominated today's game: good special teams play from Green Bay and a bad field condition at Ericsson Stadium. The Packers recovered fumbles on two straight Carolina kickoff returns to open up the second half paving the way for 28 unanswered points.

This was the first Carolina home game, but the field condition was more similar to a late season game in inclement weather. On a sunny southern Sunday, the middle of the field was completely torn up causing footing troubles for both teams.

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre and the rest of the offense might have had problems in the first half, but everything was clicking on full cylinders in the second. after throwing two interceptions in the first half, Favre responded with three touchdown passes after halftime. He finished the afternoon completing 25 of 39 passes for 309 yards.

Favre also passed Dave Krieg to move into 7th place on the NFL's all-time list for most career touchdown passes. Carolina's Chris Weinke went 18-30 for 160 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Carolina got on the board first when Weinke hit tight end Wesley Walls for a three-yard touchdown pass. Green Bay cut the Panthers' lead to one on the leg of Ryan Longwell. He connected on attempts of 42 and 46 yards for Green Bay's only scoring in the first half.

Longwell missed a 37-yard attempt in the second half after slipping due to the poor footing. John Kasay did not attempt a field goal for Carolina, but did make his only extra point attempt.

Panthers special teams star Steve Smith was benched in the second half after fumbling on consecutive kickoff returns. Packers safety Antuan Edwards recovered the first fumble while K.D. Williams recovered the second. Second-year running back Herbert Goodman forced the second fumble for the Packers.

Green Bay converted the first Carolina turnover into eight points with Bill Schroeder making a touchdown reception just inside the back of the endzone. Antonio Freeman hauled in a Favre pass for the two-point conversion. Tight End Bubba Franks caught a touchdown pass for the third straight week following the second Panthers turnover.

Schroeder led the Packers wideouts with five receptions for 67 yards and one touchdown. Corey Bradford added another touchdown on four catches for 49 yards. Running back Ahman Green paced Green Bay with six catches for 75 yards.

Green rushed for 53 yards on 19 carries for 128 total yards in the game. Rondell Mealey added 18 yards on seven carries filling in for the injured Dorsey Levens. Carolina's Richard Huntley led his team with just 19 yards on five carries.

The Panthers jumped out to a fast start with some good secondary coverage. Former Packer Doug Evans intercepted Favre on the game's opening drive. Carolina's Deon Grant intercepted Favre on the very first play following the Walls touchdown reception.

Weinke completed an apparent touchdown pass to Muhsin Muhammed following the interception, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. Faced with a fourth- and-long the Panthers gambled and lost. an open Muhammed dropped Weinke's pass and the Panthers turned the ball over on downs.

The Packers defense gave up just its first touchdown of the season. The unit has held Detroit, Washington and Carolina to a combined 13 points.

Green Bay defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila added two sacks to bring his league high total to six on the season. Meanwhile, John Thierry recorded his first full sack of the season.

For the Packers, Edwards left the game with a sprained anterior cruciate ligament (aCL). He will be further evaluated this week, but GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman has indicated he will be doubtful for the next game. Green and Thierry both suffered minor injuries but were able to return to the game.
