Green Bay Packers vs. atlanta Falcons - 11/18/01
Game Summary - Packers Lose 23-20
 |
| S LeRoy Butler left Sunday's game against the Falcons with a broken shoulder. |
Controlling the ball for more than 36 minutes, atlanta snapped Green
Bay's nine-game home winning streak with a 23-20 victory.
With just over one minute remaining, Green Bay (6-3) was driving into
atlanta territory. ashley ambrose intercepted a long Favre pass intended
for Bill Schroeder at the 2-yard line to seal the win for atlanta. ambrose
also intercepted Favre's first pass of the day.
"Two outside guys have dead sprint 'gos' - one-on-one with the corners
is what we were hoping for," Favre said. "We had an underneath shallow
cross by Free and Ahman Green on a shallow cross himself. I'd thrown
the ball to Corey (Bradford) earlier on ambrose."
Losing for just the 12th time in 75 home games, Favre threw three
interceptions and fumbled twice, losing one of them. He finished the
afternoon completing 16 of 29 attempts for 262 yards and two
touchdowns.
Favre connected on two long pass plays to Corey Bradford for 51 and 56
yards in the first half. Bradford finished the afternoon with his second
career 100-yard game recording three catches for 117 yards. Schroeder
tallied four catches for 55 yards and one score while Antonio Freeman
hauled in two passes for 45 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown in the
fourth quarter.
The Falcons (5-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three of those points
coming off the Favre fumble. The Packers responded with a 39-yard field
goal from Ryan Longwell. He also hit from 45 yards out in the third
quarter. Longwell's counterpart, Jay Feely, connected on kicks from 26,
32 and 39 yards without missing.
Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler used two big catches from his
fullback and tight end to start the second quarter with an atlanta
touchdown. Chandler hit tight end Brian Kozlowski for 27 yards to put his
team on the Green Bay 15-yard line. Following a Maurice Smith
touchdown run that was called back for offensive holding, Chandler
connected with Bob Christian for a 21-yard score.
The Packers' biggest loss of the afternoon came midway through the
second quarter. after starting his 128th consecutive game, safety LeRoy
Butler was lost indefinitely because of a broken shoulder blade.
Nearing the end of the second quarter, the Favre-to-Schroeder
touchdown came on a broken play following Bradford's second big catch
of the half.
"It was a play that was designed to go to the right," Schroeder said, "and
Brett said in the huddle that 'if it turns out that I'm scrambling, go back
outside.' That's what I did and he just threw it up there."
Trailing 16-10 to start the third quarter, the NFL's second-ranked defense
stepped up the intensity. Linebacker Nate Wayne intercepted a Chandler
pass deep in Packer territory to stall the Falcons' first drive of the half.
The Packers marched 62 yards downfield in a drive that ended with a 45-yard
Ryan Longwell field goal.
On the ensuing drive the Green bay defense forced another turnover
when linebacker Bernardo Harris hauled in a pass deflected by Cletidus
Hunt.
"I was dropping in my drop," Harris said. "I saw the fullback go out in the
flat and I thought he was going to throw it to him early but he didn't. He
was holding and I was trying to get in the passing lane. He released it
and I saw the ball in the air. I didn't think much, I just tried to catch."
Unable to capitalize on the turnover, Green Bay punted the ball back and
allowed atlanta to score the go-ahead touchdown on the next possession.
Faced with a third-and-12 on their 20-yard line, the Falcons' drive was
revived by a personal foul on Packers' safety Chris akins that gave them a
first down on their 35.
"I spoke to the official on what exactly happened," GM/Head Coach Mike
Sherman said. "I wanted Chris out of the game immediately, but we
couldn't get their attention in the huddle. There was another play where
they ran the ball to our defensive right which he was a part of a gang
tackle on that side.
"at that point I got him out of the game and wanted to talk to him about the
penalty situation which certainly was a costly penalty. He was still
emotional from the play that just occurred I'm sure and we had a
discussion there that will end up with me coming back later and
discussing it even further. That was the end of it."
Green Bay responded with a Freeman touchdown catch just over two
minutes later but it was not enough to overcome the Packers' 10-point
deficit.
Chandler finished going 29 of 50 for 352 yards, two touchdowns and two
interceptions. Terance Mathis paced atlanta with seven grabs for 70
yards. Christian caught five passes for 62 yards and a score while Brian
Finnerman added another touchdown on two catches for 24 yards.
Neither team could establish the running game. ahman Green ran for 62
yards on 17 carries and the Falcons' Maurice Smith had 43 yards on 11
carries.
Notes: Tackle Chad Clifton did not play for the second consecutive game
although he was activated...Charles Lee forced a fumble by Darrick
Vaughn on special teams that was recovered by atlanta's alge Crumpler.
