Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears - 12/09/01
Postgame Quotes - Green Bay
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on the Bears spreading the field) "They did go vertical, but it was just
they didn't make the throws downfield because I believe we had pretty good
coverage. They did have some guys going vertical on us, but the throws
weren't there."
(on the pivotal play on the touchdown drive) "I think every play in that
drive was critical that moved the chains. I can't picture just one play
that was the pivotal play. They're all pivotal when you're moving the
length of the field. That was a 91-yard drive if I'm not mistaken right
after they had scored so I think the pivotal thing was that we responded to
the momentum change. In the second half we gave them great field position
on the kickoff. They took it down field and scored. Momentum was our way
going in at halftime because of the missed field goal and our lead. They
came out and we had a poor kick and they get great field position then took
the ball down field and scored. I believe we responded right away with that
long drive so I thought the drive itself was pivotal in the football game."
(on field position difference) "It is very much a concern. Filed position
was definitely in their favor most of the game. That's what makes this win
all that more exciting because we gave them so many positions against our
defense that our defense was in a bad field position situation. I thought
they hung in there. That is something we really have to address this week
and get fixed."
(on switching offensive linemen during the game) "Marco is so tough
mentally that he can handle anything. He just broke his hand in Thursdays'
practice. He got it casted up and really hasn't practiced with it. I had a
concern, number one, about his effectiveness with the cast. I was never
concerned about his mental toughness to handle it. The guy is an amazing
guy...Tauscher's ability to move inside with limited reps and to be able to
do what he did I thought was phenomenal...I challenged this group this week
after last week's game and I'm just so proud of what they did. They took
control of the football game."
(on having 100 yards rushing on the Bears) "That is our goal every week -
to get that type of rushing output. We ran the ball well against them last
time - I think ahman had 93 yards - so we felt confident in our run game.
We were not surprised that we were able to run the football as well as we
did. We went into the game thinking we were going to run the football."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on how good the Packers are) "I don't know, that's a tough question. What
are we 9-3, is that correct? That's not bad, it really isn't. I felt like
we could be better than that at this point. I set high standards for myself
and this team. When I look at what we had to overcome injury wise, the way
we played on the road and they way we've bounced back from tough losses,
we're pretty good, but we'll find out in the future."
(on the offense running the ball) "I was impressed by the way we were able
to run the ball. For example, on the first drive we go down and score, I
know it wasn't that easy and we found that out after that, but we did some
great things against them. Our front five, they basically controlled the
game for us."
(on special teams play) "as an offense we can't concern ourselves with
that. It would help...and at some point it will become a factor. What we
have to do is score and move the ball on offense. We can't worry about if
it's at the 40 or our own 5. It's no different than the situation where I
threw the pick and they have twenty yards to go for the touchdown. Our
defense responded and that's what we have to do."
(on where the teams goes from here) "We still have four games left. We
should expect to win them as a team. We'll see what happens after that."
RUNNING BACK AHMAN GREEN:
(on beating the Bears) "It's a good thing because we're basically in the
driver's seat for the NFC Central. We've got to continue what we're doing:
playing well, running well, passing the ball well and finishing games out
until the bitter end."
(on success running against the Bears) "Our confidence is real strong in
our running game. We've got myself; William Henderson and Dorsey Levens in
the backfield. The offensive line has been doing its job all year and it
makes our jobs a lot easier."
FULLBACK WILLIAM HENDERSON:
(on ahman Green's 100-yard game) "I take a lot of pride in ahman's success
because my teammate is going out there and giving it 100 percent, I'm going
out there giving it 100 percent and the offensive line is out there giving
it 100 percent. Everybody is working together so when he does great things
it is representative of everybody's efforts collectively getting it done.
We all take pride in it."
(on next step for this team) "Take two days off, rejoice in this and get
healthy. We need to make sure everybody is focused on what we're going to
do. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We've got a long season left and we
need to make sure we're ready for Tennessee next week."
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN MARK TAUSCHER:
(on using the screen effectively) "It was a perfectly called play at the
time and I think that's why we were so successful. The coverages led to it
and we just caught them at the right time."
(on switching positions during the game) "It was more of a thing before the
game where I had to do some extra preparation during the week. It gave me a
little more anxiety before the game, but once you get out there and play
it's still football. I went out there and played as hard as I could."
DEFENSIVE END CLETIDUS HUNT:
(on holding anthony Thomas to 50 yards rushing) "We step up to any
challenge that is thrown at us. We had to step up today and derail the
a-Train."
(on the game living up to the Bears-Packers rivalry) "It was a physical
game. We played physical and tough as well and we have guys on our defense
that stepped up tremendously. Everybody went out and made plays."
(on defending against the short field) "We had to go in there and recognize
what we had to work with. We sort it out and put it in our head that we're
going to stop them right here even though they already have good field
position."
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN EARL DOTSON:
(on playing extensively for the first time this season) "Of course I felt a
little rusty, but it still felt real good. So far this year I've taken it
in my own hands to work hard in practice. Just because you're not playing
there is no reason for you not to work on getting better so I wasn't totally
out of shape and not prepared for this game. It felt good to be back out
there after so long."
(on coming in and primarily having to run block) "It was a great turn of
events to come in with only having to run the ball. It wasn't a hurry-up
situation where we were in the two-minute (drill) dropping back all the
time. Today we got in there to pound the ball and play a more physical
game."
DEFENSIVE TACKLE JIM FLANIGAN:
(on this win being more special) "There is no question this is more special
for me. They released me last year and I'm glad I got a chance to play up
here. I could not be more happy right now."
(on playing without two starters on the defensive line) "We've had a good
rotation going all year long. We've got a lot of depth. That's what you
have to do at this time of year. When people get dinged up, you have to
have people that can step in and not lose a step."
