Packers Player Of The Game
When the Packers had success on offense Sunday, it was often thanks to Ahman Green. Green had 15 carries for 53 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team with seven receptions for 62 yards. Another bright spot was Robert Ferguson, who made six catches for 53 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with knee and ankle injuries.
Vikings Player Of The Game
Daunte Culpepper led the Minnesota offense by completing 15 of 30 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Culpepper was sacked twice by the Packers, but still did damage with his legs, picking up 50 yards on the ground. Also outstanding was wide receiver Randy Moss, who made nine catches for 150 yards.
Stat Of The Game
The Packers committed five turnovers, four of them Brett Favre interceptions. Favre hadn't thrown four interceptions at Lambeau Field since Nov. 1, 1999, vs. Seattle.
Play Of The Game
You could highlight any of the Packers' five turnovers as plays they'd like to have back, but arguably the most devastating of the bunch happened late in the second quarter. Having struggled offensively to that point, the Packers faced first-and-goal at the Minnesota 10-yard line with under a minute left in the half. Trying to throw the ball away, Brett Favre was intercepted by Brian Williams. The pick not only thwarted the Packers' scoring hopes, but Williams' 77-yard return set up a 46-yard field goal by Aaron Elling. As a result, the Packers went to the locker room at halftime trailing 20-3, when a touchdown pass instead of a pick would have made it 17-10.
THEY SAID IT
GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman -
On Donald Driver: "I just was on the phone with the hospital. Donald did have movement in all of his limbs when he was on the field. The big concern was that his neck was very tender and we took all the precautions that we could to make sure that he was immobile and to get him on the cart to bring him to the hospital. The diagnosis is that he has a sore neck. We took all the precautions on the field because of the severity of possibilities that could have existed."
On Robert Ferguson: "Ferguson has an MCL sprain in his knee but really his ankle got more turned than his knee and that is more of a concern at this point."
On explaining the game: "I don't think it is difficult to explain when the other team plays better than you, they convert over 60 percent on third down, they're pretty good in the red zone, and we give them the ball five times to do it. When you turn the ball over five times, I don't care if you're at Lambeau Field, the Minnesota Vikings took full advantage of that. They are a good football team, so to explain it is that we didn't play very well."
On practice during the week: "We had very good practices this week. Anyone that watched us practice would agree with that."
On Brett Favre's red zone interception: "He was trying to throw it away. We had a double smash on with corner routes and he was just trying to throw it away and didn't see the defender."
On the team's intensity: "I don't think it was a matter of intensity. I don't think they wanted it any more than we did. They made the plays that we didn't make. I think the fact that we were down like we were and made it a five-point game at the end...I think if it was a matter of intensity, we wouldn't have fought back like we did. There are no moral victories in Green Bay and it doesn't make me feel any better, but I would be concerned if we didn't fight back. I thought that on the onside kick, if we would have recovered it, we would have had a chance."
On not using a no-huddle offense down the stretch: "We were hampered in the fourth (quarter) with personnel. Karsten Bailey had a hamstring, so he was out. Donald (Driver) was out. (Robert) Ferguson was out. We were playing with the two-tight end set and David Martin had to assume the third wide receiver spot and (Antonio) Chatman the second. So we were limited and it would be better if they heard the play in the huddle. We did do some no huddle and when we did that onside kick, we had plenty of time on the clock to go in and score if we recovered it, but it just didn't happen."
On the decision not to go for two when it was 30-17: "I went off the chart and we had a five point game at the end and if we score a touchdown, we win the game. Sometimes I use the chart, sometimes I don't and I used the chart. I knew it was the right decision and there's no question about that."
On concerns with how the secondary played Vikings' wide receiver Randy Moss: "Moss had a great game. He's a great player. He got the best of us today."
On Darren Sharper's limited capability today: "He started out playing and then he was delegated to the dime package and obviously did not play in the fourth quarter."
On whether there is doubt of home-field advantage anymore: "No I am not worried about that. I believe in the men in that locker room. I believed in them when they took the field and I still believe in them. Am I disappointed in all the work and effort that went into this game and coming away without winning in front of a great home crowd?...It was a fantastic crowd out there -- they couldn't have done more for us. They were behind us through thick and thin and that's the hard part to swallow. If we continue to have crowds like that in that environment, that home field will be established. We gave it back a little today, but we will get it back."
Defensive Coordinator Ed Donatell -
On defense's performance: "Fundamentals play a big part and there were some times that we didn't keep the right angles and come to balance on their ball carriers. We need to do that next time in the open field. We'll get better. This is a hard-working group of guys that have a great attitude. Obviously we're very disappointed to lose as Green Bay Packers at home. We don't like that and we'll look to rectify that."
On if Darren Sharper being able to play more would have helped contain Moss: "The game is all about adjusting and we knew during the week there was a chance we would not have Darren for the whole game so we planned accordingly. We just didn't get it done. There's no excuses for that. As a defensive coordinator you need to have a contingency plan when you're working, so we've just got to finish and execute."
On running game, quarterback scrambles: "I don't think they packed the ball at us with their two-back running game or anything like that. It's the quarterback out of the pocket that was really the difference in crucial times on third down when he made the play. We're not there as a run defense, but we'll keep improving. But we made steps, you just can't see them right now."
Na'il Diggs -
On how long it will take new defense to come together: "I think we're at the level now. It's not the movement of positions, it's not anything big. The problem is nothing big. It's all small things that we've been doing for ever and ever. And that's tackling, reading keys, simple things that no matter what position you're in, you should know how to do."
On touchdown pass to John Avery: "I gave him too much room. That close to the goal line I gave him too much room. He ran an underneath route. Quick guy. I give him much credit for that route. It's exactly what he's supposed to do. He read me and came under and I couldn't get under fast enough."
On impact of third-down scrambles by Daunte Culpepper: "That's a dagger on third downs. We'd get them in third-and-long situations and he would scramble out of the pocket, quarterback draws, he'd just use his athletic ability and that's exactly what they should do. He's a big guy, he can run and he has the ball. He can make things happen with the ball and that's what he did."
Brett Favre -
On the rhythm of the game: "It was a matter of execution. Regardless of who you play or where you play, turnovers, penalties, negative plays will not get it done. They were able to capitalize on our mistakes in the first half and we were able to on theirs in the second. Unfortunately, we spotted them way too many points and we have no one to blame but ourselves. The second half was just a matter of opportunities being there and making the most of them."
On his own performance today: "Obviously it wasn't good enough to win. In the second half we battled, but we can't dig ourselves that big of a hole and expect to come out of it. Turnovers happen for a lot of different reasons from a quarterback's standpoint, and regardless if it's tipped or a perfectly thrown ball -- or a receiver falls down -- they all count the same. I was ready to play and I think our team was ready to play, and for whatever reason, it wasn't our type of performance."
On whether this team improved from last year: "After this game it's hard. I don't know. I think we can be a better team than last year. Today is obviously not an indication of that and like I've said all of training camp, if we can avoid injuries and stay together we will be fine. There are 15 (games) left and with how upset I am ... we can do like we did in the first half or we can play the rest of the season like we did the second half."
On whether guys are embarrassed: "If you didn't play at the top of your game or give maximum effort, then I would hope guys are embarrassed. Without watching film and every play in detail, it's hard to say. Both teams gave great effort, but if we watch the films in might be different."
On the interception intended for Javon Walker: "It's hard to say without watching the film, but I thought it was pass interference."
On the depleted receiving corps: "I am not going to sit here and lie, it did hurt us at the end of the game. We had a tight end who really hasn't played much in training camp and wouldn't have played today if it had not been for Wesley (Walls, inactive), had to play receiver. We handled it well but it will hinder our offense if that is the case."
On what went through his mind when Donald went down: "Obviously the same thing everyone else was thinking, that he was going to be OK and be able to walk again. You're hoping it's not a neck injury that we have seen in the past but you don't know. I wasn't concerned whether he was going to come back and make a touchdown catch for us in the game ... That wasn't it. It kind of puts things in perspective."
On the difference between first and second half: "I felt the same in the first half as I did in the second half, aside from being two quarters in to it. Did I want to win the game any worse in the first half than the second? Absolutely not. Was I frustrated with my performance at halftime? Yes, I hope the whole team was. Did I put any added pressure on myself to play well in the second half? No, I was pissed off and I wanted to play well in the first half. It wasn't because I wasn't prepared or because of the effort, it just didn't happen. In the second half, it did. We moved the ball well in the second half and moved the ball a little in the first, but we stopped ourselves. If we would have just gotten points in some of those drives. You never know in this game. There was a time in the second half when I was thinking this is not pretty and it could get worse. And then the next thing I know is if we get the onside kick we were going to win the football game. There is no doubt about it."
Robert Ferguson -
On if he was thinking about Donald Driver's injury after play resumed: "I can't lie and say that I wasn't. That's my guy, you know what I'm saying? I was thinking about it, it took me a couple plays to get it out of my system, and just try to win from there."
Bubba Franks -
On 'slow start' of offense: "I don't think we came out slow, we just kind of shot ourselves in the foot. When you're beating yourself, the other team don't even have to do nothing to you. We were giving them the ball it seemed like every possession. We've got to get better."
On Donald Driver: "Driver is a great guy. We have to find somebody to come fill that position while he's out. I'm pretty sure, the coaches are good enough, they're going to find someone. I mean, we're not going to go out there with a half-loaded gun."
Ahman Green --
On the first quarter: "It was hard getting into a groove with the turnovers that we had early. It makes it tough for any team. A Division I ranked team or any team in the NFL, if you have turnovers early in a game like that it just makes it hard to come back in the game. We fought and we just ran out of time but it makes it easier when you don't have the turnovers."
On not getting the ball in the first two series: "We usually have the first 15 scripted. When I am out there I am not counting the plays. We have a nice amount of runs mixed in with the pass so you have to wait until the play is called. You have to run the play that's in the huddle and not worry about why I haven't got the ball yet and do my job."
On the fumble in the first quarter: "I had a good grip on the ball and the defender just got his hand in there. The defender made a good play. He got his hand in there a little and got the ball out. Those things happen, but I have to continue to play."
On getting over the game: "It's going to be real easy. It's just a game. We have 15 to go. It's September 7 and our last game is December 28 so we have a long way to go. If we don't get over this game we are going to be in trouble. Myself, I am over this game right now and we have to get ready for Detroit tomorrow. I am going on six seasons and Brett is on his 13th. We know what a loss is like and we know what a win is like. We have to pick it up and correct what we did wrong on the field. They got us, they came out a lot quicker than we did. We finished good, but ran out of time, though. We did have a good week of practice."
Marco Rivera -
On his injured knee: "It's a little achy right now. I'm going to go ice it up. It's a little puffy right now. It's going to be fine. Come next Sunday I don't see my knee being a problem at all."
On if it would have helped offense to run the ball more early: "It doesn't matter. Whatever play is called, we've got to execute the play. It doesn't matter if we're running, passing, whatever. We're a team, we're going to stick together. We believe in our coaching staff and the coaching staff believes in us. We are going to execute whatever play is called. It doesn't matter if we run the ball, pass the ball. If we're a championship team, we'll get it done."
On if early Minnesota score caused panic: "We've been there before. A couple years ago the Baltimore Ravens, they come in here and they score 7 points right away and we turn around, boom, we beat them. We take the next drive and we score. We just have to answer the bell. When something like that happens the offense has got to go in there and answer the bell. We've got to put 7 on the board and we've got to build on that. We've got to take the momentum back to our side."
Darren Sharper -
On trying to play with injured groin: "I let my mind and my ego tell me to go out there. But it felt good before the game. I felt like I could go. But when you get out there in the game, you have to make cuts, turn on a dime, it wasn't ready for that and it started to tighten up on me. Toward the latter part of the game it would bother me when I walked."
On if he could have helped contain Randy Moss: "Our guys are out there fighting, don't get me wrong. But I need to be out there to make a play, basically. A guy like that, you've got to have a guy that matches up with him, and I think I do that."
On if Lambeau Field has lost mystique: "No. We did a valiant effort trying to come back in the latter part of the game. The mystique is still there. We still have homefield advantage. We just didn't play well today."
On Donald Driver: I saw him move early on, that was a good sign. My prayers go out to him and his family because it's tough when a guy takes a fall like that. Any time they have to cart you off the field, it's something serious."
On trying to play after Driver injury: "You have to. You have to. Injuries are going to be part of the game. You hate to see a guy go off the field like that, especially one of your warriors like he is, but you have to try to fight on. That's what we did. We tried to find a way to win for him. He went off the field, he couldn't fight there with us, so we tried to find a way for us to get a victory somehow."
Mark Tauscher -
On thoughts when Donald Driver went down: "First off you worry about how Donald's doing. Any time somebody gets carried off on a stretcher there's a lot of concern. Football's a tough game and you need to refocus on getting back out and playing."
On team's near comeback: "We don't have moral victories. What it says is we shouldn't have played so terrible in the beginning. That's the disheartening part about it, but if you want to pull positives out of it you could say we didn't throw in the towel. But we're professionals, we're not expected to do that. That's a given. If you quit, you have no business being out there playing. We did fight back. And maybe we get that onside kick we go in (and score), but it didn't happen and we have to live with the results."
On if offensive struggles were tied to O-line shuffling: "I don't think so. Obviously we'd like to keep all five out there if we can. Marco, you give him credit for toughing it out and playing with another torn ligament. He played as long and hard as he could and Kevin (Barry) came in and did a nice job."
On what hurt offensive productivity: "The turnovers. No rhythm on offense and getting 1 yard I think in the first quarter, it's just ridiculous when you think about it. To put that much pressure on our defense, it's just a direct result of our ineptitude. That's disappointing and we need to get that corrected."
Mike Wahle -
On why offense struggled: "I think we turned the ball over a couple times, you know. Whenever that happens it's tough to get going again. We need to do a better job of controlling the ball and coming back from a situation like that. It's something that individually and as a team, correct that in your mind. It can be an issue if you make it an issue. With the guys we have in this locker room, I don't think it should be."
On team's attitude in face of loss: "Well we have some great guys in this locker room. We have talented guys, but more importantly personality-wise we have some great guys -- competitors. I think that's the most important thing that we're going to take away from this."
On watching Donald Driver go down: "That really just emotionally takes a lot out of you. Football, who cares about the rest of it? You just want to make sure that he's all right. We haven't really got the word on it. It's obviously tough. On either team you never want to see a guy get carried off in a stretcher, but when you know the guy and you love him like we do, it's horrifying."
GAME NOTES:
Prior to his fumble today in the first quarter, Ahman Green had carried the ball 248 times without a fumble. The streak was the fifth longest among active players entering the 2003 season. Including receptions, it was Green's first fumble in 195 touches. His last fumble was Oct. 20, 2002, vs. Washington.
**
The Packers onside kick recovery was the first such recovery for the team since a Fred Vinson recovery at Dallas on Nov. 14, 1999. Ryan Longwell was the kicker on both occasions.
**
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's second-quarter sack of Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper marked the fourth time the San Diego State alumnus has dropped Culpepper. Among Gbaja-Biamila's 27 regular-season career sacks, Culpepper and Charlie Batch are the two most-sacked quarterbacks. Gbaja-Biamila has sacked each player four times.
**
With 53 rushing yards today, Ahman Green surpassed No. 6 Gerry Ellis (3,826) on the Packers' all-time rushing yardage list. The Nebraska alumnus now has 3,855 yards in his Green Bay career and needs 6 yards to surpass No. 5 all-time rusher Clark Hinkle (3,860) and 83 yards to surpass No. 4 Dorsey Levens (3,937).
**
Ahman Green's seven receptions pushed him past the 200-catch mark for his career. He needs only one more catch to mark his 200th reception in a Packers uniform.
**
Today's loss was the first divisional defeat for Mike Sherman in almost three years. The last such loss was a 27-24 decision to Chicago on Oct. 1, 2000.
**
Brett Favre threw four interceptions today, his most in a Lambeau Field game since he also threw four Nov. 1, 1999, in a 27-7 loss to Seattle.
**
Had the Packers come back to win after trailing 27-3 midway through the third quarter, erasing a 24-point deficit, it would have marked their largest ever comeback victory. On Sept. 12, 1982, the Green and Gold defeated the L.A. Rams, 35-23, after trailing 23-0.
**
Today's attendance 70,505. That's a Lambeau Field record.
**
End of 4th quarter. Game over.

On their first 2-point attempt, Franks drew a pass interference call against a Vikings defender. Earlier on the drive, Franks made a 10-yard catch on third-and-8. Green had receptions of 10 and 17 yards. Robert Ferguson had 5- and 7-yard grabs. The Packers scoring drive was 14 plays, 78 yards. Time of the drive was 7:17.
Franks' 2-point conversion catch was the first of his career. The Packers hadn't converted a 2-point attempt since Favre hit Antonio Freeman vs. Carolina, Sept. 30, 2001.
**

**
End of 1st quarter.
**
Antonio Chatman's 45-yard kickoff return put the Packers in Minnesota territory, but on second-and-6, Greg Biekert forced an Ahman Green fumble that was recovered by Chris Claiborne (1:01, 1st quarter). The Vikings take over at the Minnesota 45-yard line.
Ahman Green had gone 248 carries without a fumble.
**
Aaron Elling's 22-yard field goal increased the Minnesota advantage, 10-0 (1:52, 1st quarter). The Vikings had first-and-goal at the 8-yard line, but the Packers defense shut them down. Mike McKenzie held Randy Moss to a 1-yard reception, Na'il Diggs stopped Moe Williams on a 4-yard run, and Darren Sharper covered Moss as Daunte Culpepper threw incomplete on third-and-goal at the 3-yard line. The Vikings scoring drive was 10 plays, 45 yards. Time of the drive was 4:34.
The Viking started their drive after an interception by Corey Chavous.

Earlier, on second-and-10, Brian Russell appeared to have intercepted Brett Favre on an overthrown pass to Bubba Franks. The Packers challenged the ruling however, and replay showed that Russell trapped the ball.
**
On second-and-10 at the 26-yard line, Brett Favre overthrew Bubba Franks across the middle and was intercepted by Brian Russell. Russell returned the ball 7 yards. The Vikings take over at the Green Bay 39-yard line.
The Packers challenged the call that Russell intercepted the pass. Replay confirmed the ruling on the field.
**
On third-and-8, Daunte Culpepper hit John Avery across the middle for an 11-yard touchdown that put Minnesota ahead after the opening drive, 7-0 (9:28, 1st quarter). The third-down conversion was the second of the drive for Minnesota. Earlier, after a 5-yard sack by Hannibal Navies made it third-and-12, Culpepper made a 17-yard scramble. Randy Moss had a 15-yard catch to start the drive. Kelly Campbell had a 15-yard run. The Vikings scoring drive was 10 plays, 76 yards. Time of the drive was 5:32.
**
Temperature at kickoff is 71 degrees. Temperatures are supposed to reach 80 later in the game.
**
