They Said It:
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(overall assessment of game) "We talked a lot about the series offensively and defensively, and first defense went out there, got three-and-out, and I was pleased about that. Then the first offense had a 10-play drive - would have liked to get a touchdown - we get a field goal, so I was pleased with that. Then we came back and the defense gave up a long drive. It was a key third-and-10 play that they completed to Bobby Engram on a blitz coverage that kept the drive going, as did a couple of penalties that kept the drive going. They get in the end zone, we get the ball back and we had some opportunities the second time we got the football, we just didn't capitalize on them."
(on Tim Couch's performance) "Well he didn't play very well, that was obvious. Part of it is he probably didn't practice a whole lot. He didn't practice a whole lot this week, but he said his arm felt well enough to go, so I put him out there. I question whether or not that was a good decision this time. But he said his arm felt fine and that he wanted to play so I put him out there."
(on his assessment of B.J. Sander's performance) "We certainly gave him some opportunities tonight, more than I would have cared to. But he put one down on the 11-yard line. He had a great one backed up and a couple other ones that weren't great. I thought he was 50-50 on his punts. He needs to learn how to punt the ball at Lambeau Field. I believe he is a good punter he just needs to work through some issues."
(on whether anyone stood out tonight) "I thought Ahman Green was himself. I think (Darren) Sharper played well. Al Harris played well. Ahmad Carroll, except for the penalty, I thought he did a good job for us. The young defensive lineman I thought jumped on - Cullen Jenkins. James Lee made a couple plays and missed a play; he was pretty active, which I was excited about. Kenny Peterson knocked down a ball and he was pretty active. Those defense linemen impressed me a little bit. Nick Barnett, when he was in there, I thought he played extremely well."
GUARD MARCO RIVERA:
(on the first preseason experience) "It's time to hit somebody else. It's time to put into play what you've been practicing for the last couple of weeks. It's a good test to see where your at in your personal game and as a team coming together, where you need to work and where you need to improve. And get the rust out of everything and get back at it."
(on the goals of a preseason game) "Any time you're out there you want to win, but a game like this you basically want your team to execute well and you want your mental mistakes down. And that's what the preseason games are all about. You want to execute, you don't want mental mistakes, you want guys to step up. You want to come out of the game with all of that and no injuries."
CORNERBACK MICHAEL HAWTHORNE:
(on how preseason is different from practice) "It felt good to be out there. When you get to the game, it's just a lot different than practice. You get your juices flowing and you get some nerves and you get anxious to do things and anticipate a little more. Then you have to control yourself and calm yourself down. The first couple of series you are still getting adjusted to the opposing players, and then you start falling into a groove - checking the speed of certain receivers and the ins-and-outs of their quickness."
(on the defense's goal for the game) "When we execute, everything else will fall into place. Pitching a shutout is extremely hard because you never can tell what will happen on the opposite side of the ball, be it a turnover or field position. But we just (want) to execute and take what we do (in practice) and bring it to the game."
(on his play during the game) "Some things I have to work on, and one of those is being patient. I got anxious and I need to be more patient."
FULLBACK WILLIAM HENDERSON:
(on playing only part of the game) "I really didn't get much of a rhythm. I tried to get out there and make some guys react to me, but with the short amount of time, it's tough to get in a rhythm. Like Coach (Sherman) said after the game, he saw some good things out there from us. He was happy we were able to move the ball down and get the three points. He wished the reverse pass had worked because it would have been a great play to put some more points on the board."
(on winning in the preseason) "You always want to win. It's a competition every time you step on the field. Right now they're doing evaluations and seeing who wants to play for this team. That's the coaches' evaluation, that's what they are doing. Player-wise, you have to be psyched. You're playing in front of all these people who love the Packers and you have a chance to wear the 'Green and Gold.' A guy coming in here has to want it, he just has to want it. Forget about the money, forget about everything else, this is a chance to play for this historic team and a chance to play in front of all your friends. It's Monday Night Football and everybody is watching. If (Coach) wants to know who has that drive, tonight he got a good look."
SAFETY BWAHOH JUE:
(on the first game) "It's always good to get out there and play against someone else. The speed is different from practice. That first glimpse of game speed is almost a shock to your system. Just to play against someone else is great."
(on the defense) "I think we did alright. We had a lot of mental errors and small mistakes that we made. But as a whole in the second half, we played pretty good with the second and third groups. We weren't as good in the second quarter as we should have been. Like I said, it's the first game and we are going to get better."
