They Said It
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on punter B.J. Sander's performance) "I still believe that this punter is young and can work through this thing. I have seen him make punts that are pretty impressive and some that aren't so impressive. It is two weeks into preseason games, and (we'll) continue to work with him, not have our head in the sand in the process, but continue to work with him and hopefully working through this period where he is not hitting the ball accurately - as accurately as he has in the past."
(on Tim Couch compared to last week) "I thought he did a better job this week than last week. I thought it improved. I thought it was difficult at times. His first pass, the lineman screwed up the protection and he had people in his face, but I thought he did a better job."
(on stand-out receivers) "I would think tonight that (Antonio) Chatman went out there and made two key third-down catches...that third down at two minutes - that put us in there before we fumbled the ball back - was one heck of a catch. I think he earned the confidence of his quarterback at that point. He jumped out of his shoes at that point. Tonight he has shown he has taken a step. We still have two more preseason games, so we'll see."
(on his view of the red-zone offense) "I have confidence in our offense. I think we have enough weapons there to get into the red zone. We have the same guys back from last year who were second in the league in the red zone. I think it is just a matter on working on it and timing and getting the right guys. It is hard to work on the red zone passing game that is specific to your opponents in the preseason."
GUARD MARCO RIVERA:
(on the play of the first offense) "It's hard to grade the performance without seeing the tape, things like what plays worked, what plays didn't work and what they did to try to stop us. But overall, I don't think there were many mental errors. Ahman had that one nice run. That's encouraging."
(on the play of the offensive line) "We still have a little ways to go to get back to where we want to be, with Mike Flanagan and Mike Wahle coming back. Hopefully we can start gelling as a unit and get back to where we were."
WIDE RECEIVER/PUNT RETURNER ANTONIO CHATMAN:
(on his performance as a wide receiver) "Ray (Sherman) told me everyday that I'd get opportunities and once you actually get out there, it's just all about making plays. That's just what I try to do."
(on the play of the offense) "We started to open things up a little bit. Brett's starting to get his feel back. We're all starting to get back into the swing of things and make a run."
DEFENSIVE END TYRONE ROGERS:
(on the overall performance of the defense) "The first team defense played well. One thing we were saying today was when the first unit was done, after they started off real well the rest of us wanted to continue to go out there and continue to play well and have a good showing."
(on putting pressure on the quarterback) "That's the scheme every week, to go out there and put pressure on the quarterback. We use different schemes to try to get them rattled at the beginning of the game so they don't know what's going on. That's our whole thing each week."
CORNERBACK/SAFETY MICHAEL HAWTHORNE:
(on the first game) "We approached this as we are going to play the first half as if it was a real game, not just preseason, and that's what we did. We pitched a shutout in the first half. We don't know what would have happened in the second half, but we were off to a good start."
(on playing against his former team) "That's where I came from. I'm no longer there, I'm a Green Bay Packer now. To make a statement by shutting out their first unit speaks for itself."
DEFENSIVE TACKLE GRADY JACKSON:
(on playing his old team) "It's just the preseason, you can't put too much on the preseason, but it was still a good game. The defensive effort and the offense played well, we played great as a team and that's a good thing."
(on the play of the defensive line) "We confused them a lot. We made them hurry a lot of throws and caused some turnovers. Getting out there and playing aggressive is what we wanted to do, and that's what we did."
