PACKERS-VIKINGS POST GAME NOTES & QUOTES
- Today's paid attendance for the game was 71,075.
- Brett Favre played in a 227th consecutive game (including playoffs) and made his 225th consecutive start (including playoffs), 102 more than the next-closest streak on the all-time quarterbacks list, 123 by Ron Jaworski (1977-84, including playoffs).
- Favre extended his NFL-record streak of playoff games throwing for a TD to 16. The last time Favre did not throw a TD pass in a playoff game was in the '94 playoffs, Jan. 8, 1995, at Dallas.
- With 22 completions, Favre surpassed No. 2 Dan Marino (385) on the all-time postseason list and now has 401 career playoff completions. He entered the weekend with 379, needing seven completions to pass Marino.
- With his 33 passing attempts, Favre surpassed John Elway (651) for No. 3 on the all-time postseason list with a total of 663. He entered the weekend with 630 career attempts, needing 22 to pass Elway.
- Ahman Green's 80 rushing yards surpassed Jim Taylor's 508 for No. 3 on the Packer's career postseason list. He came into the weekend with 436 and now has 516.
- Green extended his streak of postseason games with at least one catch to six, tying for the team's fifth-longest streak.
- William Henderson played in a 16th career postseason game, surpassing No. 2 Gilbert Brown and Earl Dotson (15) on the team's all-time list. Only Brett Favre, who played in a 20th playoff contest, has played more.
- With his first points of the contest, Ryan Longwell match the longest scoring streak in franchise history at 10 games, also held by Chris Jacke (10 games). Longwell has scored in nine consecutive postseason contests. He needed just one point coming into the game.
- With his first field goal, Longwell tied Chris Jacke for No. 1 on the Packers' career postseason list at 15. Longwell entered the weekend with 14.
GM/HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(his locker room speech) "I was as disappointed as I've ever been after a loss. I can handle losing a ballgame, but losing the way we lost the ballgame, not playing smart, was disappointing. We are better than what we showed today. We are a better team than we demonstrated today. We had a great week of preparation. I am proud of the guys in the locker room I am not proud of the way we played today. I am proud of them as men. I thought this past season they battled at different times. I thought they gave effort but we didn't play very well today. We made too many mistakes."
(on the play of Daunte Culpepper) "He is a heck of a player. I have said it all year long. He makes plays with his feet, with his arm - does not make many mistakes. He is a heck of a player. I have said that from the beginning of the season until now."
(on Javon Walker's injury) "He has a shin contusion. He left and tried to come back but couldn't go."
(on if the loss was tougher because of how open the NFC was this year) "No it doesn't make it any tougher. What makes it tough is that we lost a ballgame at home today and didn't play very well. That is about as tough as it gets for me. I don't need anything to make it any tougher for me."
(on if the injuries to the offensive line affected anything) "I would say it did. Losing Chad Clifton, a great player for us, the water sinks down a little bit, but I can't say that is why we lost the ballgame."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on how he feels) "Terrible and that is an understatement. I expect more out of myself, obviously. My expectation out of myself and this team are probably no different than everyone in this room and everyone watching the game. As I was talking to Mike Sherman just now I said, 'you know it's a lame excuse but I am going to use it anyway, some days it's just not your day for some reason.' I know some people will say it is a home playoff game and it does not get any better than that and it doesn't. I was prepared to play this game, how could I not be we just played them two weeks ago. Our team was prepared. They (the Vikings) were prepared too. I knew it would be difficult, but I give them credit but it was disappointing. We have been down this road before and I don't know if that makes it easier or worse but I wish them the best of luck. But I sure wish we could have went on and seen what we could have done."
(on whether or not he will be back next year) "I don't know and I told Mike Sherman just now that if I do come back I want it to be for the right reasons. I don't know how much I am expected to be paid next year but I hope that Brett Favre does not come back to play for the money. I have never done that before and I don't anticipate doing it. If I come back I want to do it for the right reasons and that's to lead this team to a Super Bowl and to give everything that I can possibly give and I have done that to this point."
(on if he has a timetable on making his decision) "No, but I think the Packers do and I think they have to know some things. I will try to make my decision within their time frame and I do not know what that is right now."
(on what will help him in making his decision) "Nothing, I don't know what to do. I didn't anticipate going home this week. I know having a family helps in times like this. My 5 year old, who is back in Mississippi right now, her grandmother is telling her mommy and daddy are coming home and she is excited about that. She doesn't know that our season is over, nor does she care. So it will be nice to get back to the family. It's not about me anymore. My wife has gone through some difficult times and continues to and so that is going to play into my decision making. I know if my family was up here right now they would say he's coming back, we are not going to let him go out like that and I would expect them to do that but I also have to be fair to them too and their going to be involved. I say nothing, I am pretty simple, pretty boring I don't' do a whole lot. My vacation is going home to Mississippi and hiding and that is what I will do. Unfortunatly I will probably think about this game until whenever and to block this game out and make a decision is going to be difficult but I will try my best."
TACKLE MARK TAUSCHER:
(on whether this was more difficult than other playoff losses) "They are all tough. There is a finality to a playoff loss that there isn't in a regular season loss. The loss at Philly last year was real tough and this one is right there with that."
(on whether losing takes muster off of winning the division) "To me it takes all of it off. What good does it do you to have a division title. It's something you want to accomplish at the beginning of the year, but it doesn't hold a lot of weight when the playoffs start. The playoffs is its own thing, and that is what everyone wants to win."
(on the team's confidence level coming into the game) "We were incredibly confident. We knew we matched up well with this team, and we knew if we executed we would be all right. That didn't happen today. They played a lot better than we did. In my mind, that's the difference."
(on turnovers) "That sticks to the execution. When you don't execute, you turn the ball over. Turnovers are the name of the game. When you can't get turnovers and you turn the ball over as much as we did, it's a recipe for what happened today."
(on whether he would question Brett Favre's interceptions) "I'll never question anything he does. What he does is for the best of this team, and I'll never question it."
CORNERBACK AL HARRIS:
(on Randy Moss's second touchdown) "We called an all out blitz. There is no way possible that you should have time to run a double move. The ball has to come out quick. I was sitting on the route. Of course I'm going to sit on it. That goes back to last year (against Seattle). All out blitz, quick throw, interception, touchdown."
(on what the defense needs to improve on next year) "We have to play defense, we have to do things right. We have to stop touchdowns, even if they throw it on the back shoulder."
(on summarizing the season) "We lost. We lost in the first round of the playoffs. There's no moral victories. We lost in the first round, and they beat us."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on his missed field goal) "With the line of scrimmage between the 5- and 10-yard line on that right hash, it was a mud bowl. It was the worst spot on the field. You either baby it through there or you try to attack it; I tried to attack it. And it went up and blew hard left."
(on his cleats) "I know how to wear cleats on this field. I know what works in what situations. When it's soggy and muddy, you are kind of at the mercy of the root grabbing you."
(on the field conditions) "It was an issue on kickoffs. (Viking kicker) Jose (Cortez) went to a short, almost field goal approach. It was a big factor, obviously."
(on getting back to a Super Bowl) "Rob (Davis) and I were talking about that the other day. We got here are first year and just cruised through everybody - nobody was better than us - and (we) got to the Super Bowl. The same thing the next year...The opportunity is so slight and is so small. Last year was one of the best opportunities we've had since then, and we didn't take advantage of that. Obviously, we didn't take advantage of this one either."
WIDE RECEIVER ROBERT FERGUSON:
(on the way his season ended) "This is definitely not the way I wanted to end my season. I think it will just drive me throughout the offseason, and I'm going to try to have the best offseason I've had since I've been in the league."
(on whether he could have played today) "That's not even an issue right now. The reason for me not playing was medical issues. I respect that. It's my health and my future at stake. I didn't even question it. It's tough being there watching the team; you want to be out there battling. It was tough, real tough."
(on who made the decision for him not to play) "I didn't make the decision. I told the doctor what I had, and he tells me whether or not I can play. It came down to a situation where I had symptoms for two weeks. They wanted to allow me at least that much time to (rest), especially with a head injury."
DEFENSIVE END AARON KAMPMAN:
(on having to play defense after a turnover) "That's tough, I'm not going to lie to you. But it was tough on our offense to go out right away after we gave up two big plays on defense. We lost as a team today."
(on the defense can improve for next season) "Obviously we need to work on our tackling, we didn't tackle well today, and we need to create more takeaways. Those are the types of things we need to continue to work on."
VIKINGS HEAD COACH MIKE TICE:
(on the play of quarterback Daunte Culpepper) "Culpepper has been great for us all season. He has tried to carry us to victory a number of times and because we didn't give him enough support his legs gave out a few times before the game ended so he couldn't carry us the whole way there. There have been a number of games this season where he did his part and a bunch of other guys parts too. He is just tremendous. He has great fortitude, character, and just a winning-edge that you need."
(on the success of the Vikings defense) "We played smarter, and we played tighter coverage with more confidence and Antoine (Winfield) was starting, and Ralph Brown gave us more juice on nickel than we have had over the course of the last five weeks. Playmakers make plays."
(on the Vikings quick offensive start) "We have wanted to start fast on the road all season and we haven't been able to do that. We talked about starting fast since the first day of training camp. Today we had the big play by Mo (Williams). That is something that we needed. You have some guys who have lost some close games and some early confidence, so it really helps those shoulders stay high and gives them the chance to keep their chins up."
VIKINGS CORNERBACK ANTOINE WINFIELD:
(on if the Vikings knew what to expect from the Packers passing offense) "It seemed like the Packers did the same thing they did in the previous game - the same routes, same formations - we were out there calling out plays and running the same routes, so we had a chance to get out there and jump some routes. They kind of made it easy for us today."
(on defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell's game plan) "It was a great game plan. What we wanted to do early in the game was to put some pressure on Favre, not let him sit back there and get comfortable to pick us apart. We stopped the run. To beat this team you have to get turnovers."
(on what the difference was in today's game) "Getting interceptions. In the last two games (against the Packers) we had a lot of opportunities to get those interceptions and we didn't come up with them. I think our defensive line and linebackers did a great job putting pressure on him."
VIKINGS QUARTERBACK DUANTE CULPEPPER:
(on his second touchdown pass to Randy Moss) "It was a run call and they showed the total blitz that they got us on a couple of times earlier in the game and I saw Randy and gave him an audible signal and he just ran it perfectly, he ran a five-yard stop and took it back up. We were able to fool number 31 (Al Harris) and I just put it out there and Randy made a great catch."
(on if this was the biggest win of his career) "I would definitely say so. This win was huge. Not only is this our biggest rival, but it was a playoff game, a game that pretty much everybody said that we couldn't do it. We just pulled together. We never bought in to the negativity and it just showed what we can do. I'm glad we did it because it showed us as a group what we can do when we pull together, persevere and keep fighting."
(on the protection his offensive line afforded him) "The offensive line did a great job, particularly on the last drive when we needed to run the ball and they knew we were going to run the ball, and that is what good teams do - they run the ball and run the time out at the end of the game. You can't give a great quarterback like Brett Favre the ball back, and we were able to do it."
