Packers-Lions Post-Game Quotes
PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN
On WR Javon Walker: "It was an ACL (injury) from what I understand. He was unable to come back. You really can't make a determination on that until you get an MRI which will be tomorrow. He certainly wasn't able to come back into this ball game and I doubt (he'll be back) anytime in the near future."
On what happened on offense today: "(We had) seven penalties offensively and we turned the ball over three times. You have to give them credit - they did a good job. I didn't feel like we were in a position where we struggling until we would get some manageable third-downs and then didn't convert (them). Our numbers on third-down were 5-17. If you don't convert on third-down then you don't keep drives alive. A lot of those third-downs were manageable third-downs. We had a lot of second-and-longs because of penalties. We were 0-2 in the red-zone - that's something that we've worked a lot on. Our failure on third-down; last year when we were here we were 8-15 and today we were 5-17. Those are pretty considerable contributing factors."
On continuing to struggle with penalties: "We've been talking about it and I said I would get it cleared up and I haven't. It isn't like it just popped up here - it's been happening all preseason. We haven't had our head in the sand in regards to it. I talked to them about everyday and I talked to them about it last night and I talked to them about it before the game. We have to look real hard at it because we can't play with the amount of penalties that we had today. We can't do it. You guys have been writing it and I agree with you."
On whether not getting first-downs in the second-half was due to lack of rhythm: "Yeah, we were definitely out of rhythm and out of sync; a lot of it because of our own doings. We victimized ourselves a number of times but you have to give Detroit credit. They did a good job in containing us and not allowing us to get out of the blocks. There were a couple of series there where we only had two receivers because (Robert Ferguson) went inside for an IV and Javon (Walker) was done as well. I take my hat off to Detroit. They did a great job and deserved to win a football game."
PACKERS QB BRETT FAVRE
On how he feels: "I'll probably feel worse tonight. I can play another game right now. It's inside that hurts the most. I can handle the physical part of it."
On how the offense couldn't quite pull together scoring drive: "Confidence is everything. I give a lot of credit to their (Detroit) defense. We had a bunch of missed opportunities. Our defense played hard. We just missed opportunities. Once again, I give them credit. They're going to say that they created those missed opportunities, and from their standpoint, they're right. We had too many penalties. We weren't consistent in our run game. They didn't have to react to the run as hard as they normally do. They got some pressure on us. When we did make some plays but we couldn't capitalize on them. It's as simple as that. I don't even know what the statistics were, but the most important one is that we scored three points. I felt like, at times, we moved the ball well. The last drive of the game was the only time that it seemed like we kept getting first downs and got some momentum. Obviously, at that point, it was too late. We obviously, have a way to go. I mean that for our offense because I felt like our defense did the job. If you would have told me that we were going to score three points today, I would have said that you are crazy. I told Steve (Mariucci) after that game, 'I give you guys a lot of credit.' But, if you're in my shoes, you have to be disappointed. I'd like to think that we could score more than three points."
On keeping his composure when things were going wrong: "I was frustrated. I tried my best. I've been in games like this before, not only here in Detroit. I think the first game that we played here, in this stadium, it was like that. There were some games like that at the Silverdome. You just say 'what else can go wrong?' After that last drive, I kept telling the guys 'hey, we're not out of it.' It's easy to think that we are out of it, because up to this point we've got three points and who's to think that at this point in the game we're going to get more that three points. But you have to go down swinging. I really felt like if we got into the red zone and got a touchdown - who knows. Crazier things have happened. You get an onside kick, throw one up for grabs and you're back in it. I played in enough games to know that anything can happen."
PACKERS CB AL HARRIS
On whether there is anything he can do to help CB Ahmad (Carroll) cut down on his penalties: "We can't single out Ahmad or anybody else when it comes to that - I have been in his shoes before in Philadelphia where people are looking at every little thing that you do and it's not a good feeling so we can't point a finger at him. He's just got to keep playing hard; I think he's doing a good job - I think that was the only catch No. 80 had. Like I said, we as a unit - me personally, we just got to get better."
On the maturity level of Ahmad Carroll: "He's doing a good job and he is real aware of what is going on, he's matured a lot, but like I said we as a unit; me personally, we made too many mistakes."
On the game: "We are a much much better football team then what we showed today. I am not taking anything away from the Lions, they played a great game, they won the game. My hat goes off to them and they did a good job today."
PACKERS WR DONALD DRIVER
On the game: "We had 14 penalties in this game. When you have that many penalties, you are going to lose a game. All around, we did not play well tonight."
On if QB Brett Favre went up against a good defense: "I give them credit, they won the game. I'm not going to say that they have the best defense. I think we put ourselves in a bad situation that cost us the game."
On how WR Javon Walker feels: "I just talked to him, he said he feels fine. It's going to be a long road for him, but he feels good."

LIONS HEAD COACH STEVE MARIUCCI
Opening statements: "It is a good win. I understand the Vikings lost and the Bears lost and the Packers lost. We started the season the way we want to. We have a long way to go. We have to get better in every phase but we played a real physical game, a hard hitting game today; both sides. There were a lot of injuries, a lot of smacking. It was a defensive struggle really for the most part. Special teams played a large part in this thing. I thought we were very disciplined with a few penalties, which was something that we needed to get fixed from the pre-season. I thought the defense we tremendous; five three-and-outs in the second half. And we needed to get them three-and-out because we weren't getting much done on offense for awhile. We finished the game with a big audible to Chuck (Charles Rogers) down the sideline was huge; it kind of led to the touchdown. It was a good game, good energy, the fans were awesome. That is the way to start a season here. We have to build on that and if you are going to win the division, you have to have a winning record on the road pretty much. It starts next week; we have to go to Chicago and find a way to win that one. It is going to be a big game with a much improved team - you know that. I am very happy, very proud of these guys and how hard we played and how physical this game was. It wasn't fancy, there was no finesse at all to this game. It was a North Division sort of black and blue division slug fest is what it was today."
On how the team has improved since their preseason loss to the Rams: I have never talked so much about a preseason game in my whole life to be quite honest with you. I don't talk about it - I just seem to have to answer questions regarding it. We worked hard, that was the message after that game. It is not like we weren't working hard prior to it, but we knew that we had to keep working and have a sense of urgency and get some things fixed and be better at numerous things. There was any number of things that we had to address and by no means are we there. We have not arrived. I told the team I expected to win that game. I also knew it was going to be a tough opponent. They have won the division, three in a row and with No. 4 playing it is always a challenge. I think we are growing up. I think we still have a lot of work to do. We have to get to a point where we can have these guys playing together. You looked across the field at the Packers and you look at their skill level on offense and they have been together a long, long time. They know each other; every thing about each other on offense and how it works. We need to get to that. I like our approach, I like where we are and where we are headed and they will enjoy the game for a few hours here, but boy we are going to get back to work tomorrow because we have a big one staring at us right in the face."
On the importance of this game: "It beats the alternative, but it is round-one of a title fight. I have said that before. Heck, I have said that after a loss. It is one-round. Is it a big round? Yeah, I think in some ways we made a little bit of a statement and it was a good thing. Good for the fans, good for this team. We have a ways to go. We have to get some things in place if we are going to beat somebody that is playing their best."
On calling a running play on third-and-long: "Like the draw play on third and ten? It was a call we made that, you make a call and go with it. Yes, we knew our defense was playing well, but I don't know if that played into that philosophy. We wanted to establish the ground game. We wanted to pound the ball a little bit and try to be physical. It was that sort of a game. It wasn't one of those spectacular passing game sort of performances at all. It was going to be grind it out and see who is left standing at the end."
On any mistakes they may have made: "We took it away, we took care of it. Joey Harrington threw a couple of touchdowns and didn't turn it over. We fumbled that one snap from center, that hurt us because we were going to go for it on fourth down and then all the sudden it was third-and-one and then it was fourth-and-four. I didn't have a field goal kicker to try for a field goal, so we went for it. Other than that, we didn't make big mistakes, either side of the ball. We didn't make the big mistakes. We kept the penalties to a minimum. I am sure our assignments were pretty good; we will go through it. All in all it was a good start. We will take a win against the Packers, 17-3 anytime."
On K Jason Hanson: "Jason, I think it was the first kickoff and he came back and he kind of looked at me like 'something happened here.' We wrapped him up and then Joey was going to be the holder and Nick Harris was going to be the kicker. I had Nick kickoff. Jason was in the locker room for awhile to get wrapped up. Then he came back in after halftime and he started doing those chip shots. And he said 'I can kick extra points and short field goals, everything else: let the other guy do it.' I haven't seen him since the game ended, but I am sure he will be a little sore. We will have to wait and see."
LIONS QB JOEY HARRINGTON
On how it feels to put a team like the Packers away: "It feels good. We have been in too many of those games over the last couple of years where we have a lead, we have a chance to put them away and don't - Especially because of No. 4 (Brett Favre). There is one fresh in my mind from last year, and we weren't going to let that happen again. I can't give enough credit to our defense for keeping Green Bay out of the end zone; for the first time in 77 games I think I heard. They kept us in the ball game. We started quick, we played well on offense and then we hit a couple of bumps. I am proud of our guys for fighting through it and putting it away at the end."
On the wide receiving corps: "It is nice to have them out there. Green Bay was doing some good things to take away those guys. They moved Al Harris around with Roy Williams, and shadowed him around the field and rolled coverage to him. They played some coverage very deliberately to take our receiving threats away. Guys like Marcus Pollard came through early, our running backs; Shawn Bryson had a couple of carries; Kevin Johnson had huge third down conversion for us. They allowed the guys on the inside to make plays for us and then when we had the chance. Like I said it is nice to have Mike (Williams) and Charles (Rogers) and Roy (Wililams) out there."
On having TE Marcus Pollard: "I don't care what system you are in, it is nice to have him. Marcus was terrific tonight. Very intense; played extremely well and had some good catches for us. He had a big third-down conversion going down to start the second half; he blocked well; he is good."
On how he feels about the first game: "Like you said it is just one game. We all realize that. But let's face it, this is the Packers and it is the team that has won the division for God knows how long; as long as I care to remember. I know we are all tired of losing those close games and looking up and seeing green and yellow on top of the division. So for as much as it is just one game, and we have 15 others that are obviously going to determine our season, it was great to beat them right out of the gates and get a jump on them in the division."
On how the game was important because it was a division game: "It was one week. I haven't had a chance to see any of the film of the other games. I am sure we will get a chance to see it in some down time, but it was great to beat Green Bay because of the run they have had on top of everybody. In reality it is one game and we have to go to Chicago next week on the road to get another step up in the division."
On whether they thanked the defense: "You better believe we did. They did a great job of giving us good position on the field, of giving us the ball first of all and keeping Green Bay out of the end zone. You do the math; it's been five seasons since they haven't scored a touchdown last. They kept us in the ball game and I told every one of them that. I will tell them again; that defense kept us in the game."
On WR Mike Williams' touchdown catch: "Mike is actually the second or third read depending on how they played it. I thought they actually did a good job of exchanging the coverage when Roy Williams ran across. They were lined up in what looked to be a man coverage set and we were hoping to get Roy across in the formation and Roy ran to the flat hoping to get him, but they did a great job of passing it off and in the process just left Mike open sitting there for just a second and it doesn't look like much, but that is a pretty big catch, especially for a rookie. He found the zone. He did the veteran move and sat down. He recognized zone coverage and sat down in a spot where I could get him the ball."
