Packers-Vikings Post Game Notes & Quotes
- Today's paid attendance was 70,610.
- Donald Driver extended his streak of games with a reception to 58, tying Hall of Famer James Lofton for the third-longest streak in team history. Next up on the list are current running backs coach Edgar Bennett (60) and all-time leader Sterling Sharpe (103).
- Driver marked his third career two-touchdown game (also vs. Carolina, Sept. 29, 2002; and at Detroit, Oct. 17, 2004).
- Brett Favre's 53-yard scoring pass to Driver late in the first half marked the Packers' longest play from scrimmage since a 57-yard pass from Favre to Javon Walker, Oct. 11, 2004, vs. Tennessee.
- Aaron Kampman had his first career multiple-sack game, finishing the game with two sacks for 14 yards. Kampman has three sacks in his last two games.
- William Henderson started his 100th career game.
- Henderson has earned 300 career catches after his lone reception tonight. He came into the game with 299 receptions.
- Antonio Chatman surpassed No. 5 Al Carmichael (753) on the team's all-time list with his 21 punt-return yards tonight. He entered the game with 743 yards and now has 764 career punt-return yards.
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on not establishing the running game) "I think Minnesota had a lot to do with that. Their inside guys did a nice job on our inside players. Our guards struggled at times with those fellows. You have to give them credit. They did a nice job."
(on what there is left to play for this year) "This is what we do. This is our job, we play to win. We played to win tonight. It's unfortunate that it came up the way it did. This series has been decided by three points or less many, many times. Tonight we were on the wrong side of that three points. We've been on the other side of the three points and we'll get back on the other side of the three points. There is plenty to play for."
(on Gado's carries in the second half) "It was a combination of things, certainly the fumble didn't help much. I would have been more willing to get him back in there, but we were in a different type of game. We did not have any success with anybody running the football. (Tony) Fisher was the back of choice in regards to protection, route running and things of that nature. It's not a knock against Gado, there just weren't a lot of opportunities in there for rushing. But certainly he has to hold onto the football."
(on how frustrating it is to be in so many close losses) "You have no idea how frustrating and disappointing it is. But at the same time, when you lose, you lose and we're measured by wins and losses, it's frustrating. From a coach's stand point when you get a bunch of guys in the locker room that care about winning and try to win and gosh dang we didn't get it done, I'm disappointed for them and obviously disappointed for our fans. I'd rather be in close games and lose than get blown out, I'll tell you that right now. I'd rather us be competing every week and have a chance to win than not having a chance to win at all. I don't think anybody can question our effort, our toughness, our tenacity, our will to win. We practice, but we're certainly not claiming any moral victories here at our current record."
DEFENSIVE TACKLE GRADY JACKSON:
(on the Vikings' 13-play drive) "It didn't take anything out of us, but the penalties - the offsides and the two pass interference (calls) - that helped them out a little bit. We can't blame it on that, we should have gotten off the field."
(on the last-second loss) "It's devastating. I feel like we should have beat them, and we just didn't. You can't cry over it. Right now, we just have to find a way and get back on a role again. When we get them down, we have to keep them down and play harder the second half. The cutbacks really killed us, mistakes and penalties."
DEFENSIVE END AARON KAMPMAN:
(on his two-sack day) "Regardless of the individual (performance), you just can't feel good when we lose a game again. We have to find a way to get it fixed."
(on the field goal to end a Packers-Vikings game...again) "It's bitter, it's a bitter pill to swallow. We can't do anything about it. We have a short week coming up and we have a Philly team who is going through some things as well. We have to get ready to play them."
(on if the team is out of the playoffs) "You never know. Our goal has been to just get a win. That's where we are at right now, get a win. And that will continue to be our focal point. Hopefully we'll get a victory against Philly. Whenever you decide to lay down, that's just the terrible sign of a man and a team, and we'll never do that. But it's frustrating."
RUNNING BACK TONY FISHER:
(on losing to the rival Vikings) "It's extremely tough. We felt coming into the game that we were more than capable of beating them. We let one slip away from us over there and we let another one slip away from us today. They made the plays when they needed to make them, and we didn't."
(on the difficulty the Packers had running the ball) "I don't know. There was something we needed to get right and we weren't able to get it right. Obviously, it made us (change) from what we wanted to do in the game. In the end, when you have to just leave it all on the passing game, there defense already knows what's coming."
(on where the team goes from here) "You still have to take it one game at a time because you never know what can happen. There's a lot of stuff that can happen and hopefully it does happen (in our favor.)"
(on his injury) "I was a little nervous at first, but after I took my first hit I was OK, after I realized it wasn't going to bother me too much. As the game went on, the more and more I forgot about it."
(on so many close defeats and what that says about the team) "It says we are a better team than what we are playing. We have to start finishing games. It's hard for us to go out and play one half and then not be able to finish in the second half. That's something we have to start doing is finishing."
TACKLE MARK TAUSCHER:
(on the two Viking losses this season) "I think this game is night and day. I don't look at any comparison from this game to the first game. We played well the first time we played those guys, as an offense. The defense? I give them a ton of credit. - they played great both games. Tonight, we just didn't get it done."
(on the play of the Vikings) "They are good players, but when you let them do the things they want to do, they are going to be better. We could have controlled them a lot better than we did."
MINNESOTA VIKINGS HEAD COACH MIKE TICE:
(on the Vikings ' run defense) "We talked all week about not giving them anything on the run. I hadn't heard of their running back before last week and I told them at the end of the night that I didn't want to hear about him again. I didn't know what his name was before the game last week and tonight I didn't want anyone talking about him. They accepted that and they went out and stopped the run. I am proud of them."
(on the team's recent success on the road) "Turnovers and not getting panicky when something goes wrong and showing more maturity. The guys hung in there. It was a tough start and we are starting to settle down a little bit. We are still not good enough offensively but we seem to be good enough when we need to be."
(on the performance of running back Mewelde Moore) "He runs hard. It helps when he gets some blocking but he ran hard and he was able to get some extra yards on some of those because I thought the receivers were blocking extremely well tonight. He is a good young player. He is growing up."
MINNESOTA VIKINGS QUARTERBACK BRAD JOHNSON:
(on the effectiveness of the offensive line) "We really started running the ball really well; especially on first down it didn't feel like they could stop us. It really opened up our play action. We had two or three shots down-field on the second drive in the third quarter. That was a 13-play drive for 72 yards and we got going."
(on what has changed since he has taken over at quarterback) "I think we just believe in each other. In the first four or five games we played some tremendous teams when you look back at it. The first time we beat a heavyweight team was the Giants. In the last four or five weeks we have stopped people in the first quarter. They haven't given up a big, long touchdown. They have created turnovers and given us short fields offensively. For the most part we haven't turned the ball over, especially early in games, and we have been in games even though we have struggled in the first half."
MINNESOTA VIKINGS CORNERBACK DOVONTE EDWARDS:
(on what it means to win a Monday Night Football game) "It is big. Monday Night Football is the biggest stage of football. It was our rival, Green Bay, at their house, in a big time atmosphere. We played well."
(on his 51-yard interception return for a touchdown) "We were in a zone coverage and I just read the quarterback the whole way. He looked over there the whole time and I was able to break it before the receiver did."
