PACKERS-LIONS POST-GAME QUOTES
PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE MCCARTHY
On how it feels to get his first win: "That's the way you're supposed to spend Sunday afternoon. It was an excellent win for us, I'm just really happy on how they scrapped and fought for 60 minutes. I'm very pleased with their effort and the outcome."
On how it feels for him personally: "You know, it's great to get the first one and I'm looking forward to many more, but it's really a tribute to the players and the coaches. I thought they had an excellent week of preparation and they go out there and cash in on that performance. I'm very happy for everybody involved."
On how he felt about QB Brett Favre: "We have a number of things that go on at the line of scrimmage, in particular on the road with the crowd noise - I thought he did a great job managing that. We didn't have any things from a decision standpoint, he was 100 percent in that area. His performance in the passing game was excellent. I thought he was very smart with the football - pushed it down the field when the opportunity presented itself, took the check downs. I thought he had an excellent game."
On the performance of the offensive line: "Protection was outstanding. The protection unit, I think they did a really good job helping one another and being in-tune with the stress of the protection based on how they were defending us. We got a lot of protection on the check downs; so, I was very pleased as a whole with our passing game."
On if he used a lot of the West Coast offense: "I think so, in the passing game. Our concepts are familiar to what has been seen around here, so we were pleased with that. We just keep banging away at the run game and we'll be able to take advantage of the action pass game that comes off that. Like I said, I'm very pleased with the drop-back passing game and the production of the West Coast offense."
PACKERS QB BRETT FAVRE
On how he feels about throwing for 400 touchdown passes (in his career): "I mean what can I say? We needed a win, a lot more than I needed 400 touchdown passes, you know? That's icing on the cake. We have a long ways to go - obviously. We did some good things, in the process throwing for 400 touchdown passes. Like I said during the week, or I've told people, the good thing about that is that I've been able to do it and to be around for a long period of time and it wouldn't be near as special had we lost."
On how he threw the ball to nine different players in the game and if that reflects how the offense is designed: "Well, I think at least in my 15 years with it, it's really built on the short passing game and really in some respects replaces the run. We're trying to establish a running game, but we can be effective throwing the ball underneath to a lot of different guys. We max protect a lot more right now than we have in the past, as opposed to maybe in my early years where we got everyone one-on-one and threw three and five step drops - more three step - but, yeah it is designed to spread it out and I think it's more effective by doing it that way."
On how he took nine or ten check-downs or jump-offs and if that's what they mean by managing the game: "You know, you guys had asked me earlier in the week - I guess it was Wednesday - about being coached different. Right out of the blocks I throw a little five-step drop underneath pass to change the play at the line, I would like to take credit for it but it makes a great play down, makes a great block and right away we're up seven nothing and we really never looked back. It was back and forth a little bit, but I felt we had the upper hand and I think you play differently than when you're playing from behind and when things are going well it's much easier to play. I didn't have to hold the ball in the pocket a great deal. For the most part we stayed in manageable down and distances and for any team, when you're in situations - from a quarterback standpoint - where you can throw 3-yard passes or dump it off, then it's much easier. To answer your question - yeah, I think that's how you manage the game, but I don't want to make a big deal out of it. I went into the game and played it the way I felt like I needed to, I didn't feel like I had to take chances or many chances and when guys are making plays when you can throw it underneath then it makes it a lot easier. I mean, I dumped the ball off numerous times when we got 15-20 yards. Why take the chance and throw the ball down field when you can do that? In fact, there were a couple of plays where I did throw the ball down the field when I probably should have dumped it off. I'm more disappointed about that than the positive plays."
On what it means to keep penalties to a minimum: "Yeah, you know I think as you're watching this game and without watching the film or watching the TV copy, you see some signs of 'oh, this team.' Then all of a sudden you go 'well that's why they're on the fence,' and there are some things we need to clean up and it's not things that the other team is doing necessarily, it's what we're doing or not doing and I'm sure people are back on the band wagon. I don't know. I know that we did some really good things, we made some plays. Plays were really not there for the first third down to Greg (Jennings), we were just hoping to get a first down. I say they - Donald (Driver) and Greg (Jennings) they pick up the signal that I give them, run an X-route, get a good pick and the next thing you know it's a touchdown. So, I mean those are the type of plays that if you are going to be a good team, you have to be able to make - maybe not every time, but you got to be able to make (sometimes). Koren Robinson comes in and really on a busted play makes an unbelievable catch and you know, I think that filters down to other guys. I mean, everybody wants to make a play and everyone was involved today and that's the great thing because we did make some mistakes that had we not made those big plays maybe we didn't overcome because the game still came down to one play. As I'm sitting here in the fourth quarter for the last four, five or six minutes of the game, I'm telling the guys that we got to find a way to end the game and not give it back and I'm as much to blame as anyone else - we won it, but we have to find a way. Unlike last week (when we didn't close it), today we did. We have to do a better job of putting the game away."
On how he feels about the series between the two teams: "Well this one has to go down, you know, I don't know what's hyped for the rest of the season, but today nothing else matters. I've played in a lot of big games and have grown to appreciate wins - period and how hard they are to come by and today was a big one for us; but, when I think of Detroit and our games, whether it be Green Bay or here, I think of two games: the one, the playoff game that I threw the ball to Sterling and the game that we stopped Barry Sanders in Green Bay for no yards. So, there have been a lot of games before, in between and since, but those have to go down as two of the best."
PACKERS WR GREG JENNINGS
On catching Favre's 400th touchdown pass: "Anytime you're playing with a guy as great as Brett and you're able to achieve something with him and with the team, and personally to have caught that pass, it definitely means a lot."
On if this was a big statement game for him back in the state of Michigan: "I think that was definitely important to me to come back. I have a lot of friends here watching. You always want to play well, but you don't want to go outside of what you've been doing. You want to keep your focus and continue to do the things that you've been doing."
On if getting a big play at the beginning loosens you up: "It definitely loosens you up. Even when you're able to get a catch early in the game in the first quarter, as a receiver it kind of calms the game down, you have that first catch out of the way and then things start to get rolling."
On his first 100-yard game as a pro making him happy: "Definitely. It's not about the individual stats. I think the biggest thing that's going around in this locker room is excitement from the win. To have an individually good game puts icing on the cake.
PACKERS CB CHARLES WOODSON
On what it feels like to play with the Packers: "It feels good. We've been together for a couple months working together. There was a couple hard losses early in the season; 0-2. I think we learned form our mistakes and we're getting better. We got a win today, and no matter how you get it, it feels good to get that "W"."
On what Woodson feels the problem with the Lions is: "It's hard to say, I've been watching them for a long time; being in college here and growing up in Ohio and being close to it - it feels like they can't get on the right track. It wasn't for the lack of talent when you had guys like; Barry (Sanders), Herman Moore and (Robert) Porcher - they always had the talent. But for whatever reason they could never pull it off and get it done."
PACKERS RB AHMAN GREEN
On how satisfying the victory is: "It feels good. It's not like college football, where you have to win by a certain margin and that determines the BCS at the end; a wins a win in the NFL."
On if he was nervous at the end of the game: 'No, its part of the game. Coach wanted to make a point that we're going to run the ball and try to get a first down; that's what I was trying to do is get a first down. One of the Detroit players made a good play on the ball and that's how it goes. Fortunately enough our defense stood strong and they made a play on the ball."
On if they ran satisfactory today: "Satisfactory yes - can we gat better, yes. We did run satisfactory but there is still a lot of room to get better."
On what the feeling is when the ball pops loose: "When I saw it pop loose, I think I saw Dré Bly pick it up and all I thought was: tackle him. I just wanted to give our defense a shot at stopping there team."
LIONS HEAD COACH ROD MARINELLI
Opening statement: "Obviously, this is a very disappointing loss for us, it's something we just have to accept, look it straight in the eye. Third down conversions on defense - we weren't good enough and we have to get better in those areas obviously. The ball was coming out quick and Brett (Favre) did a heck of a job - the rush, they were keeping some people in, but we still have to get better pressure than that. The ball was coming out quick. (We've) got to tackle; we've got to do a better job of tackling, so that was disappointing to me - that part of it. Our field position, our kicking game hurt us. We've got to be able to convert a little better field position to help our offense. Other than the one turnover on offense, I thought they really moved the ball well. In terms of those things you could see some of that coming today, they seemed to come alive a little bit and we were moving the ball well - we just got to win it. It was a close game, it's our job to go out and win it. It was a winnable game, but we just got to do it. Injury-wise I think we came out pretty clean. (Ross) Verba kind of re-strained it (hamstring) early in the game. Paris Lenon has kind of a sore neck in there, I think he'll be fine - kind of like he did last week."
On not having any sacks in consecutive games and how disturbing it is to him (Marinelli): "The first one, two weeks ago was - we had some one-on-ones I thought we should have won - no question. Today, it was they maxed a little bit - the ball was coming out pretty quick. They have to push the ball out which allows guys to break on the ball - but no, it is disturbing. It's something we got to do. They doubled Shaun (Rogers) quite a bit; the other guys have to open up and go - the guy that gets a single still has to rush and get it done and then some of our blitzes we weren't able to come home with."
On some of the problems they're facing: "Just like I said, getting off on third down has hurt us and you know, we're getting them in the yardage situations we want and we're either just missing a tackle - whatever, is coming off in turns of leverage, the leverage on the ball, breaking on the ball, those types of things and getting sacks - those things all work together."
On the interception the Packers returned for a touchdown and if he thought it was pass interference: "He had..., but you know, it's their call."
On the fumble challenge: "Yeah, I thought we might have had a shot on that, so we took a shot at it. It was down by contact, it happened very fast - looked like it was coming out and a couple of players thought it came out and so when the clock was moving fast and the new rule down by contact, so I wanted to make sure we had a chance to look at it."
On if he's worried about it getting more difficult to instill his message here with the team being 0-3 instead of 0-0: "No, well it could be, its human nature, I think. I just got to go back and the staff's got to go back with the same message and go back and re-teach, be very positive with what we're teaching, correct off the film and look forward to getting the team ready for next week."
On QB Brett Favre's performance: "I'll give him credit, there's no question about that. Obviously he's a Hall of Fame quarterback - he came out ready to play and was throwing some great balls; but we've got to come up with turnovers though - that's the thing. We've got to be able to get some turnovers, some interceptions - that's what we need, and we're not coming up with those right now."
On the lack of performance from the secondary defense aside from CB Dré Bly: "Yeah, we just got to go out and make sure we're seeing the ball, not guessing and playing the defense."
On if the secondary just isn't good enough: "No, I think they're good enough - I know they are. We just have to go out, they're trying hard and we just got to get it done for them. We've got to help them and they've got to help themselves, got to see the film and correct it; but, we've got to make some plays there."
On why DE Jared DeVries was inactive: "You know, the one thing we wanted to look at this week, because Fernando (Bryant) wasn't here and it hurt us, we were concerned about maybe fresh legs in the kicking game and we put Mike (Williams) up for one of those reasons, to make sure - if we needed him, some fresh legs for the kicking game; so, Mike replaced (Jared) DeVries - Mike Williams replaced Jared DeVries. He was a backup in most of the stuff, so my concern with the three safties and a couple of them are beat up. If somebody went down they would have had to get into the kicking game, so we were looking for a way to have some fresh legs."
On if he was holding his breath the whole game: "Oh yeah, I was nervous - not nervous, it's football. I thought Ross (Verba) would have been able to hold up a little bit longer than he did, but that's who we got, that's who we got and we got to play with them."
On how disappointed he was and if he had expected better results: "Oh, no question. I'm extremely positive, I really see it all. I was and I still am and I'm just going to keep pounding man. That's me, that's who I am. I love this game and this opportunity and I go right back to work and make sure we see where we need to improve and go from there."
On how he feels about the offense's performance: "I really felt we had a nice rhythm going in terms of throwing the ball, you know? We were protecting well and we just had a pretty good beat on them and we felt pretty good about throwing the ball."
On if QB Jon Kitna would have still taken a knee at the end of the first half had they had all three of their time outs: "I think at that point we knew we were going to get the ball in the first possession of the second half. We're down, backed-up - I can't remember how much time there was, but right there we were making this thing close, we were in it and the worst thing to do I thought at that moment to get a three-and-out, turnover and all of a sudden give an easy field position and give a score. I thought at that point we should just get out of there."
On how disappointed he was to get pressure from a three-man front at the end of the game: "It's disappointing. These guys got to block, that's part of the deal - we have to block, and yeah that is (disappointing)."
LIONS QB JON KITNA
On what the team needs to do now: "We've just got to stick together and hopefully we have enough character in this locker room to do that."
On if it's going to be good for them to go on the road with that in mind: "Nope. I enjoyed playing here today. I thought the fans were strong and into it. It's never easier to play on the road as an offense."
On if this game was set up for the Lions to win: "No. Set up games for you mean nothing in this league. Every single game is a dogfight. There are no easy games in this league. You've got to come out and perform and you've got to do it for 60 minutes. It's hard win in this league, and that's why you get so excited when you do win. There is no bad wins in this league. I don't think this game was set up or anything like that. They were struggling, they were looking for their first win and they were hungry too and they were able to come out on top."
On how difficult it is to keep morale up now: "It's not difficult. This is when the leaders step up and we find out what kind of a man you are. It's easy to be a strong, tight team when things are going well, but we'll be alright. This football team is going to be fine and I think the attitude in this locker room is fine."
On how he would grade the offense: "I don't grade us. We played well at first. We feel like we can score every time we touch the football, and that didn't happen today. That's how it was."
On the progression of the offense: "It was better today, and I think we saw some things. But we still left a lot of yards on the field and that's too bad."
On how much work they have for next week: "We've got work every week - it's every week. We've got to stick together and keep getting better, week-in, week-out. 0-3 means nothing. We could be 3-0 and it wouldn't mean anything if you don't keep getting better. That's what you have to do - keep getting better each week. You never know when that one play is going to happen and all of a sudden a team catches fire. You just have to be sure that when that play comes you'll be ready for it."
LIONS RB KEVIN JONES
On this being the type of running performance that he's been wanting: "Yeah, my goal was to come out and try to touch (the ball) every play; trust the line - and I did. I tried to read all my blocks well and I did an okay job. The line did a good job opening things up for me trying to get things started."
On if he felt that his running was the key to opening up the offense: "Coach Mike Martz got me the ball early - he told me before the game that he was going to do that - and that brought them up a little bit. Then we backed them off with the pass. So we had a good mixture, it just wasn't good enough for the win. That is a positive thing for us as far as putting points on the board, but that's what we're supposed to do."
On how this loss feels: "It's disappointing because we work hard all week; we work hard in camp; and to go out and fight for four quarters and still not win is disappointing for us, and I know it's disappointing for the fans, and I apologize to the fans but we're trying."
On how they can bounce back from this loss: "Same thing we've been doing since I've been playing football: just try and put this one behind (us) tomorrow and go back to work."
On if he feels that team is really a 0-3 team: "No, I don't think the record shows our talent - but this is the third year saying that. So we've got to make a difference, make a change."
LIONS WR ROY WILLIAMS
On having a career game but not getting the win: "It hurts a lot; I'd rather have one catch for one yard with a win instead of what I had. We just have to go back to work and get this thing going. We'll come out with a win sooner or later."
On if the offense is finally coming together: "No question about it. My hat goes off to Shawn Bryson on the first touchdown; he's the one that got us going. He's the one that lit the fire in the offense and that's when we really started going. We (realized) we can score and we can really move the football, it hit home with a lot of guys. We went out there and tried to do what we do best and we came up short today."
On if Green Bay gave any defensive looks today or if they were standard: "They played one-on-one on the outside most of the time. They maybe doubled the wideouts on a couple of coverages and we exploited them. We did a good job offensively; we had good running yards - good passing yards and just have to get one more - or two more touchdowns."
On this not being the same old Lions: "We're working hard; 0-3 doesn't mean we're out of the playoffs. We're not saying that we can't win these next thirteen games and finish 13-3. We're going to take it one game at a time; go to St. Louis and hopefully be 1-3 in this first quarter - then go get ready for the second quarter."
LIONS T JONATHAN SCOTT
On how his first start went: "Right now I'm not too much focused on my individual effort. I just wanted to come in and get a win; we didn't do that. I know I'm going to have to push a little harder to get those extra things done to pull out the victory. At this point I'm not really going to evaluate myself yet, but I definitely see a positive coming out of this whole thing."
On how disappointing it is to lose this game: "It's heartbreaking. Wins get addictive. If you don't get 'W's,' it hurts for a little bit. The thing about it: when the day passes, you've got to get back to work and find a way to win. Right now it's really does suck, but come tomorrow, it'll be behind me."
On if this is going to be a tough game for this team to bounce back from: "Yeah. It's all about adversity. Right now we're faced with adversity and the thing we've got to do is overcome that adversity. I know I've been in this situation before in my life, especially on the football field, so I know that can be accomplished in the aspect of coming back and getting 'W's.'"
LIONS CB DRE BLY
On getting a win: "Winning is contagious. So hopefully we just have to find that one win. Once we find that win we'll be fine. There's a lot of football left to be played and it's frustrating but we have to move forward."
On if losing is contagious: "It's all contagious, but we as a football team have to think positive; we had our chances. On the offense Kitna is throwing well; we're not turning the ball over and he's making good decisions back there. The interception was pass interference, the guy obviously grabbed the dude and the ball deflected off his chest. So offensively Kevin played well; we just have to hold up on the back end and not give up the big plays."
On the defense not producing and how tough it is: "It's very tough. We're better than we played the last two weeks; we have a very talented defense. We probably have the most dominate guy up front and then on the back end if you give me the opportunity to make plays, I'll make plays and then we have the guys in the middle. We also have other guys who play well, we just have to stay focused and eliminate the big plays."
On when the defense recovered the fumble did he feel there was a good chance to tie the game: "I was hoping. You try and stay positive and hope we have a chance. They found a way to get the win at the end; I guess they deserved it more than us."
LIONS LB BOSS BAILEY
On the lack of the pass rush today: "I think the thing (Brett Favre) did was that he got the ball out of his hands quick. We give them the credit for that. They had some pretty good (success) playing against our rush, because we had a great rush. But he was getting the ball out of his hands quick and he was getting out of the pocket and making some plays and looking like Brett Favre of old. He's going to show that throughout the season and fortunately for him today that came against us, and that was unfortunate for us."
On playing without CB Fernando Bryant and LB Alex Lewis: "I think it affected our depth, because the guys that stepped in did a good job. I think it affected us like it did the first couple of games. The guys that stepped in did a great job and we've just got to go back to the drawing board and clear some things up."
LIONS LB DONTE CURRY
On the defense allowing over 30 points two weeks in a row: "It's tough. We try to keep teams under 17 points. Its little mistakes that would break down the defense. We have to try to capitalize on some of those mistakes, and they can't happen. They happened at the wrong time. We've just got to stay focused and find out what those mistakes are, and we can't afford to make those same mistakes in the next week."
On how tough it is to keep morale up going into next week: "Three games in the season - you've got 13 more to go. That's a long stretch, and we're only in September right now. So if we give up right now, we shouldn't even be considered an NFL team. But we've got to look forward, we're 0-3 right now in what we call quarters, and this is the first quarter and we finish this quarter with the Rams. We try to go 1-3 in the first quarter and then we put that behind us and we go on. We're playing four quarters of football."

Packers Game Notes:
-Brett Favre's first-quarter TD pass to Greg Jennings marked the quarterback's longest throw since a 79-yard touchdown to Javon Walker, Sept. 26, 2004, at Indianapolis.
-The teams combined for 28 first-quarter points (14-14 tie), the highest-combined output in a Packers game since that 2004 game at Indianapolis. In that game, also a Week 3 contest, the Colts led Green Bay 21-14 entering the second quarter. Indianapolis wound up winning, 45-31.
-Donald Driver delivered the key assist on Jennings' 75-yard touchdown reception, screening Detroit CB Dré Bly for several yards, allowing Jennings to score up the right sideline.
-Marquand Manuel recorded his first regular-season interception, as well as his first NFL points. With the Seahawks, Manuel intercepted Carolina's Jake Delhomme in the 2005 NFC Championship, Jan. 22, 2006, at Qwest Field.
-Ahman Green went over 10,000 career yards from scrimmage with a second-quarter carry.
-Greg Jennings' determination pushed him past the first-down marker in converting a key third-and-5 late in the first half. On the play, a 10-yard reception, the rookie went over 100 yards receiving for the first time.
-Jennings' 101 yards (with 12:19 remaining in the game) marked the most by a Packers rookie since Sterling Sharpe had 137 (on seven catches), Sept. 25, 1988, vs. Chicago at Lambeau Field. Billy Howton holds the team's single-game rookie record, 200 yards (on six catches), Dec. 7, 1952, at the Los Angeles Rams.
-Wide receiver Robert Ferguson recorded his first NFL tackle to end the first half. On the field in defense of a possible long pass, Ferguson made a textbook stop on a Kevin Jones run and could've prevented a Lions touchdown.
-Brett Favre has recorded consecutive 300-yard games for the first time since Dec. 19-24, 2004, in games vs. Jacksonville and at Minnesota, respectively. Today marks Favre's 50th career 300-yard passing game, including three in the playoffs. His 47 such efforts during the regular season leads all active passers.
-A.J. Hawk recorded his first NFL sack, dropping Jon Kitna for a 9-yard loss early in the fourth quarter.
