Retired Numbers
The Green Bay Packers will formally retire Brett Favre's No. 4 at a future date to be determined, according to club president/CEO Mark Murphy, which will mark only the sixth time in nine decades the franchise will formally remove a uniform number from circulation.
IThe last player who had his number retired was Reggie White, whose No. 92 was retired in the 2005 home opener. The gesture was not spurred by White's premature death in December of 2004. In fact, then Packers CEO Bob Harlan had met with White three months before he passed away and told him of the team's plans to retire the number during the '05 season. All retired numbers are displayed on the green facade of Lambeau Field's north end zone (pictured below). Not including Favre, the five previous Packers players to have their number retired are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
IThere is no known evidence that Tony Canadeo, one of those five, was ever honored at a public ceremony; the club is believed to have retired his number sometime during or after the 1952 season. Some think the team retired his No. 3 on 'Tony Canadeo Day,' Nov. 23, 1952, against the Dallas Texans at (old) City Stadium. The future Hall of Famer that day scored two TDs in a 42-14 Packers win, but newspaper accounts don't mention the number retirement.
In research supplied by the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the team's known four number retirement dates are listed below.
