PACKERS SIGN NOSE TACKLE STEVE WARREN, THIRD-ROUND PICK IN 2000 DRAFT

The Green Bay Packers have signed nose tackle Steve Warren, their third-round selection in the 2000 National Football League draft, to a multi-year contract, Andrew Brandt, the club's director of player finance/football operations, announced today.

The 6-1, 307-pound Warren, the 74th player chosen, was a season-long starter for the University of Nebraska in 1999 and helped the Cornhuskers defeat Tennessee in last January's Fiesta Bowl (31-21). He closed out the season with 45 tackles (23 solos), seven sacks for minus-65 yards, 15 stops for losses of 86 yards, 2 pass deflections and 12 quarterback pressures.

As a junior in 1998, Warren started the first six games and subsequently was bothered with back problems, forcing him to miss two games, following which he lost his starting job. He later underwent surgery on his left knee in January of 1999 and took kickboxing lessons to improve his flexibility and win back a starting job. The Springfield, Mo., native earlier had played in every game as a sophomore in 1997, starting two, and appeared in 8 games as a true freshman in 1996.

Warren, who is expected to back up veteran Russell Maryland at nose tackle, is the second of the Packers' thirteen 2000 draft selections to sign a Green Bay contract. He joins defensive tackle Ron Moore of Northwestern Oklahoma State, the second of the Packers' five picks in the seventh round.
