PACKERS ADD SIZE, DEPTH AT RECEIVER, SIGN CHARLES LEE, 7TH ROUND PICK

posted 06/21/00

Formally adding size and depth at wide receiver, the Green Bay Packers have signed Charles Lee, a seventh-round draft choice from Central Florida, to a multi-year contract, it was announced late Wednesday by Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance/football operations.

The 6-2, 202-pound Lee was a highly-productive performer in 1999, catching 7-or-more passes in eight games and finishing with 87 receptions for 1,133 yards and 5 touchdowns. En route, he caught 11 passes for 203 yards, both season bests, against Auburn.

Earlier, the 22-year-old Homestead, Fla., native made 46 catches for 656 yards (a 14.3-yard average) in 1998, when he was on the receiving end of passes from quarterback Daunte Culpepper, a first-round draft selection of the Minnesota Vikings following that season. Lee had caught 29 passes for 460 yards (a 15.9-yard average) as a sophomore.

Lee previously lettered in three sports - basketball and track in addition to football - at Homestead (Fla.) High School, where he averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds per game in his final prep basketball season.

The third of the Packers' five seventh-round picks in this year's draft, Lee is the fifth of the team's 13 selections to be placed under contract. Previously signed were defensive tackle Steve Warren of Nebraska, acquired in the third round; linebacker Na'il Diggs of Ohio State, the first of the Packers' three fourth-round choices; offensive tackle Mark Tauscher of Wisconsin, the first of the Packers' five seventh-round picks; and defensive tackle Ron Moore of Northwestern Oklahoma State, the second of the seventh-round selections.
