The Green Bay Packers Tuesday named Joe Baker to their defensive staff. Mike Sherman, Executive Vice President and Head Coach, in announcing the move said that Baker's specific assignment will be announced once the entire defensive staff has been hired.

Baker, 35, has multiple ties to the state. In 1999, he coached outside linebackers and special teams under Barry Alvarez on a Wisconsin team that captured the Rose Bowl. The Badgers with Baker's guidance paced the Big Ten in kickoff-return average and field-goal percentage. Plus, Baker's father, Joe Sr., is the athletic director at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Entering his 14th year in coaching and his 11th in the NFL, Baker joins the Packers from the New Orleans Saints, where he spent the last five seasons. Most recently, over the last two years as secondary coach, he was responsible for the Saints' safeties and shared the overall coordination of the defensive backs. Before New Orleans promoted him, Baker assisted in the secondary from 2000-02 and on special teams from 2000-01.

From 1994-98, Baker worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars as manager of football operations (1994) and assistant special teams coach (1995-98). Before that stint, Baker coached running backs and wide receivers at Samford University in 1993.

Baker spent time as player personnel coordinator for the World League's Birmingham Fire, before moving to Samford. Launching a versatile career in football, he coached one year (1991) at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) State.

A former wide receiver, Baker helped Princeton to the 1989 Ivy League championship. He graduated from the school in 1991 with a degree in history.

Baker and his wife, Jill, have a daughter, Mia, and a son, Joey. He hails from Glen Ridge, N.J.
