Packers Coach Of The Week: Kyle Korinek, Reedsville HS

Kyle Korinek, of Reedsville High School, has been named Green Bay Packers Coach of the Week, the organization announced Thursday. Korinek is the first recipient of the award in 2007.

"I'd like to thank my parents and my family," Korinek said. "I wouldn't be where I am today without them. I'd also like to thank my fiance Anna. She's stood by me and has been absolutely wonderful."

Korinek was an assistant coach at Reedsville in 2006 under head coach Pat Popp, coaching the linebackers. He was promoted to head coach in 2007.

In his first game in charge of the Panthers, the team pulled off a 53-0 victory over Sevastopol last Friday while racking up 442 rushing yards. The Panthers (1-0) defense held the Pioneers (0-1) to 42 total yards and minus-(-2) rushing.

DeShawn Wynn has had two good practices. I thought he did a nice job yesterday after reviewing the film. Just seeing him today, I thought he had a good day. He'll have a big opportunity come Thursday night. He'll get a lot of carries in the game. It's a big day for him.

He's questionable.

We're talking about possibly playing him a couple series. We talked a little bit about it this morning. I'm going to let the week's work kind of dictate how much I play the offense. As far as play time as a whole, the offense will probably play a little more than the defense. You could see the way we practiced today, we have a ton of different combinations. We had a lot of guys working the opponent compared to more guys working the game-plan stuff, and what we're trying to do is make sure everybody gets equal quality of the work just to keep our conditioning up throughout the week. That's why you saw the different combinations of people out there today.

Not real specifics, other than the fact that he was feeling better today, and the doctors are still fairly encouraged. He's, as you guys know, you guys know better than me, you've all been around him during the time when I was out in Seattle, he's a remarkably tough professional football player that was also blessed with remarkable genetics, I think. But we're hopeful. I don't know how you can predict this, but we feel fairly good that he's going to be OK.

Former Marine Lance Corporal Scott Krutchen and his family are guests of the Packers and Festival Foods this evening for 'Operation Fan Mail.'

Krutchen (pronounced CROOK-ten), a resident of Madison, Wis., was injured in November 2004 when his unit's HUMVEE was hit by a roadside bomb near Mahmudiyah, Iraq. He later retired from the Marines in July 2005 due to medical reasons associated with his injuries sustained in the attack. He is currently attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is joined tonight by his mother, Vicky Moeser, and a friend, Matt Briscoe, still an active member of the Marine Corps.

New this season, 'Operation Fan Mail' is a program in which the Green Bay Packers and Festival Foods recognize a military family at each home game.

To choose families, the Packers and Festival Foods are asking interested families, or friends of eligible families, to submit an essay, 500 words or less, ..

It was a small factor. It was really the whole offseason program as far as building off of this. We have two factors that I need to be aware of. One is the medical condition of our football team. With this latest group of injuries, it's all two to four weeks. The timing is not very good for us going from 75 to 53. That's the first problem. The second is that we have a number of positions that aren't answered yet. I need to clear those things up and I don't want to wait until Tennessee to do that. That's really why we're changing gears as far as playing our ones for three quarters in this game. We're going to play bunch of combinations. We need to sit down as a staff tomorrow and do that. The Green Bay Packers signed FB Erryn Cobb, a rookie free agent from Northwestern, and released S Marviel Underwood. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement Tuesday.

Cobb, a four-year letterwinner and team co-captain in 2006, played in 49 career games for the Wildcats. He began his career in 2003 as a linebacker before moving to fullback in 2004. Cobb was the team's starting tight end in 2005 and played 'superback', a combination of tight end and fullback, as a senior in 2006.

The 6-foot-1, 241-pound player also blocked two punts in 2006. He will wear No. 25.

One of the Packers' fourth-round picks in the 2005 NFL Draft, Underwood played in 16 career games for Green Bay.

FANS REMINDED THAT UMBRELLAS ARE PROHIBITED IN STADIUM

Tickets are available for Thursday night's Bishop's Charities game featuring the Green Bay Packers vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Packers announced Monday.

A few hundred tickets were returned to the Packers by the Bishop's Charities Committee, according to Mark Wagner, the Packers' director of ticket operations.

The available tickets are $72, $64 and $59 each. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Packers' ticket office at Lambeau Field (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or by telephone at 920/569-7501.

Wagner also asked fans to pay special attention to the right end of the ticket with the perforated portion containing the section, row and seat number. That portion of the ticket needs to stay intact; it is torn off as the fans pass through the turnstile. A few instances occurred last Thursday with fans arriving at the gates with that specific portion of the ticket missing.

Probably not. On that aspect of your question, probably not. You just evaluate who you're seeing. If you know who they're going against and you a have a little bit better gauge of the quality of that player, but probably not. In terms of what I thought of the game, I thought it kind of disintegrated, or something. First of all I thought our guys played hard and they played effectively. We moved the ball on offense, which there seemed to be a lot of angst around about that, so that was good. I thought our defense played pretty good, and our special teams played solid. Again, I think probably both teams, all things being equal, in a game like this where it's raining and it's 38-6 or something at halftime, I imagine everybody would like to just say OK, let's just call it. The Green Bay Packers have released veteran wide receiver Robert Ferguson. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement Friday.

"We thank Robert for everything he has given to the Packers," Thompson said. "In addition to his contributions on the playing field, Robert has been a positive influence in our locker room and a good teammate. (How much satisfaction do you take as a GM seeing Cullen Jenkins justify his contract?)
There weren't any concerns about him not quote-unquote justifying it. Cullen has been a good football player here for a long time. We felt like the move to defensive end helps put a little bit brighter spotlight on his abilities. He's a good football player and he's worked very, very hard this offseason to keep improving, which is what true professionals do. Yeah, I was glad to see him have success, but it doesn't surprise me.

(Is he on the cusp of being a great defensive lineman?)
Well, adjectives like great or good or outstanding or excellent ... we're really, really happy to have him. He presents a lot of problems to offensive linemen. He's unique in his physicality, in his build, in his balance. He's not your classic 6-foot-6 defensive end, but he's tough to handle.

We'd definitely like get a good look at Rory. That's exactly what we saw in college, very similar playmaking ability, particularly from the backside with the speed that he showed in the Pittsburgh game. He's just been hurt. We need to look at that second group of linebackers and the different combinations over the next three weeks. Hopefully, they can all stay healthy because that hasn't sorted itself out yet.

(What are you expecting from the first-team offense on Saturday night?)
Score points No. 1. We want to get out there, get into a rhythm. Get our timing better. Our execution wasn't very high. We're looking at going 25 to 35 reps with the first group on offense and defense. We'll see how that plays out whether it's a quarter or two quarters. We just want to continue to grow and find that rhythm and timing that's necessary.

I thought the second group did a nice job. It was a field goal to win (scenario). I thought the second offense did a good job. I thought the first defense did a nice job in the 1's vs. 1's with the interception. They needed a touchdown to win that drill.

(What did you think of practice as a whole?)
I thought it started very good. I thought the team run was very physical, spirited. I thought the offense got after the defense in that particular drill. I thought the defense got after the offense in the blitz drill. Seven-on-seven were pretty good. In the team drills I think the defense got after the offense.

(Is the defense ahead of the offense right now?)

A limited amount of tickets is available for Saturday night's Midwest Shrine game featuring the Green Bay Packers vs. the Seattle Seahawks, the Packers announced Monday.

A few hundred tickets were returned to the Packers by the Shrine Committee, according to Mark Wagner, the Packers' director of ticket operations.

The tickets are $59 each and located in the end zone. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Packers' ticket office at Lambeau Field (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or by telephone at 920/569-7501.

I've had that question a couple times from some of the writers. I've seen Aaron progress as a quarterback since he's been here. We've had a lot of confidence in him from the get-go. But having said that, it was good to see him have a little success out there. He moved around, saved a few plays. I think he has a very good arm, very accurate thrower. I think he showed us what we see in practice every day. But to do it in game action obviously is very important, and I think he feels pretty good about how the game went.

I guess so. But again, I've been OK. We did a lot of work on him prior to the draft and we've studied him since he's been here. We came out and threw the ball six times to start. I thought the third-down conversions we had some opportunities. I thought the protection was good for the most part throughout the evening, starting with the first group. It's a starting point. I think our pad level was high on offense, so those are things we'll look at tomorrow in the film. We have work to do.

Overall though, you're pleased to come back to Pittsburgh and get the win?
It's important to win, you know winning is important. That was obviously our goal when we came here. The focus for our football team was to come out and play a physical football game against a physical football team. I think we accomplished that. We talked about ball command, ball extraction with the defense with the turnover ratio. Offense did not give the ball up, and I thought that was the key to the game. I saw a lot of positive things out there by our football team, but we still have a lot of work to do.

(How important is the defensive line when building a team?)
Huge. We've talked from the get-go that both the offensive and defensive lines are the engines that run the thing. You can have as good a secondary as you can possibly have, but if you don't have a defensive line that can control the run and put pressure on the passer and things like that, in this day and age it makes it unbelievably difficult to be successful. So we put a lot of weight in that, and there is a lot of weight in our defensive line.

(When you were here before with Ron Wolf, he spent big money on Reggie White, Sean Jones and Santana Dotson. Are you following his blueprint there?)

It really started last year. I thought that group was the most consistent on the football team and had the most depth. Adding Justin (Harrell) and some other young guys just adds to that depth. It's a very, very competitive position.

(How important is that to building a team?)
When we talk about the blue print of the Green Bay Packers we talk about the offensive and defensive line. That's where we put our emphasis. The transactions we've made for our football team reflect that. It all starts up front. Offensive and defensive line is a priority for us. I'm very happy with the depth at the defensive line.

(How good is that to see it come to fruition so quickly?)
Absolutely, we'll continue to build that group through the draft. You can never have enough good offensive and defensive linemen.

The Eighth Annual Woodward Radiothon will be held Aug. 9-11 to raise money for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The radiothon is sponsored by 105.7 WAPL, 95.9 KISS FM, 104.3 the Breeze and 1150 WHBY and will broadcast live from the Lambeau Field Atrium from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Throughout its history, the radiothon, which is presented by the Sovereign Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, has raised more than $1.7 million to support programs and services at the Milwaukee hospital, as well as Children's Hospital-Fox Valley, which is located in Neenah.

Extra hazard pay? They need to get healthy, yeah. We're short there. That's why practice was kind of adjusted there at the end. We had to do some more special teams work. We wanted to go a little more red zone. Donald Lee is obviously healthy, Joe Werner practiced today. But Clark Harris has an ankle sprain, and Zac Alcorn has blisters and pig toes, his feet are all screwed up. Bubba's eye is still a problem, so those three guys are out. And obviously we put Tory Humphrey on IR today after the surgery on his ankle. So, a little short.

The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Ryan Dougherty, a non-drafted rookie free agent out of East Carolina. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signing Friday.

Dougherty was a three-time All-Conference USA selection, with a career average of 42.7 yards per punt. The four-year standout had 68 punts inside the 20, playing in 47 career games.

The Orlando, Fla., product also served as the team's kickoff specialist his junior and senior seasons, accounting for 47 touchbacks. Dougherty was a three-time watch list candidate for the Ray Guy Award, presented to the nation's best college punter.

The 6-foot-1, 233-pound player will wear No. 8.

In a related roster move, tight end Tory Humphrey was placed on injured reserve (ankle).

Lombardi Avenue's makeover is complete and it's just in time for the 2007 Packers season, starting with Saturday's 'Family Night.'

The two-stage project, which began in 2004 with the revamping of Lombardi Avenue from Ashland to Ridge Road, last week completed the second phase, from Ridge Road to Highway 41. The east-west artery now has three lanes of traffic in both directions from Highway 41 to Oneida Street, along with designated turning lanes at all major intersections.

With construction finished, the Brown County Highway Department is recommending that Packers fans attending games this year familiarize themselves with results of the work from Ridge Road west to Highway 41.
