Mike McCarthy Post-Game Press Conference Transcript - Nov. 29
posted 11/29/2007
(How serious is Brett's injury?)
I don't really know the seriousness of it. He has an elbow and a shoulder. We'll know more once we get him back.
(Did he have it x-rayed?)
I don't have that information. I couldn't tell you.
(Are you concerned that he might not be ready to go next week?)
No, Brett Favre, I think, has a great chance to play against Oakland.
(How did Rodgers play?)
I thought Aaron played well. He gave us an opportunity to get back into the football game. We didn't deviate from our plan. We were able to stay in our sub-personnel groups. I thought he played well tonight. I'm very happy for him.
(Given Aaron's performance, would you be more inclined to use him if Brett isn't 100 percent?)
That's something that we have 10 days to discuss. We'll be looking at the film. That's not something that we're in a position to talk about right now.
(Is there any similarity?)
I wouldn't say that because it was the elbow and the shoulder. I would say it's different.
(Is this similar to the elbow problem that he had last year?)
I cannot get specific. I have not a conversation with Pat McKenzie yet. So I don't know the details of his injury.
(To what do you attribute to Favre being off tonight?)
We anticipated some pressure to our empty sets. Just going through some of our plays I thought we had some push, particularly at the right tackle, where he was unable to step up. I thought he took a couple shots that looked to be in tight coverage early in the game. I can't answer your question in detail without looking at the film.
(Were you trying to take shots early?)
Yes, we were. We wanted to play aggressive on offense. We felt that we had some opportunities in personnel coverage, our perimeter against their perimeter. We knew pass protection was going to be a challenge and I thought Dallas did a good job with their pass rush.
(What do you attribute Aaron Rodgers' performance to?)
I think Aaron Rodgers is going to be a fine quarterback when his opportunity comes. He's prepared now for three years. I really liked the way he stepped in there and took command of the huddle. Once again, we were able to stay with our plan. We didn't change anything. We didn't deviate from anything. That's what you want from your backup.
(Did not having Woodson make you change some of the things you did?)
We prepared all week as if Charles wasn't going to play. Our plan did not get executed as well, particularly in the coverage part of it. As far as playing differently because of Charles, that was not the case.
(What did you think of Romo?)
I thought he had a heck of a night. I thought he played well. He was composed. We didn't get a lot of pressure on him. I thought they did a nice job.

(Why do you think Brett just threw a couple of those balls up there?)
I don't specifically know what you're talking about. He had the flea-flicker and had pressure. He really didn't have anywhere to throw the ball. I'm trying to think of the other one. Jennings down the middle was probably not a good decision.
(What did you think of the Cowboys offense tonight?)
I thought the Cowboys played well. I thought they pass protected against our pass rush very well. We didn't do a very good job covering them.
(Is Woodson close?)
He is close. It was a decision made, basically, because we have a lot of football left. If this was a playoff game, Charles would have been out there tonight.
(Can you give us an update on injuries?)
Brett's the only one I have.
(Why did you pull Colledge?)
Pass protection was part of the decision. As you know for weeks with Juice Coston, we're trying to work those guys as a trio and that was a performance decision.
(How difficult was this loss?)
I look at it as an opportunity that we didn't take advantage of. We're 10-2. That tells you exactly where we are. They're a good football team. This game may affect the playoff seed. That's fine but we still have a lot of football left. I think you need to keep it in perspective there and we have as a football team. We're disappointed because this is an environment that we have not played in as a young football team. I thought it was very important for us to come in and win this football game because we will be playing in a lot of championship atmospheres as we move forward. This is an opportunity that we need to learn from this because we did not play our best football tonight.
(Did you sense that the guys were tense before this game?)
I felt that the course of the week that they were very focused. You talk about loose. If being loose means listening to loud music in the locker room then I don't have a problem with that. I thought the preparation was excellent. They were normal in the locker room before the game. We need to tighten some things down. I was disappointed with how we played segments of the game. |
