Packers' Davis Announces Retirement, Will Join Football Staff

Rob Davis, a 12-year NFL veteran, has announced his retirement from the Green Bay Packers and now will join the team's front office. He was named director of player development Wednesday by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

Davis served as the Packers' long snapper for 11 seasons and played in 167 consecutive games in a Green Bay uniform, the third longest streak in team history. Only Brett Favre (255) and Forrest Gregg (187) played in more consecutive games than Davis.

As the director of player development, Davis will be vital in maintaining locker room cohesiveness and overall player health. He will assist players in acclimating to their roles, both on and off the field and in the Green Bay community.

"This transition for me is an example of player development at work, as we try to assist players for life after football," Davis said. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity to have played 11 years..

Brett Favre Retirement Press Conference Transcript - March 6

(Opening statement)
Seems like just yesterday we were here. Well, I think we all know why I'm here. First of all, sorry I'm late. But I am officially retiring from the NFL and the Green Bay Packers, and as much as I've thought about what I would say, and how ... I promised I wouldn't get emotional ... it's never easy ... you know, it's funny, I've watched hundreds of players retire, and you wonder what that would be like ... you think you're prepared ... but I was telling Deanna on the way over here, God has blessed me with so many great things. Ability, wonderful family. And as I was flying up here today I thought about so many different things and how I wanted to say some of the things that I felt like I need to say, but he gave me an opportunity to use my abilities, and I seized that opportunity ... I thank him for that.

I'd like to thank the Packers, for giving me the opportunity as well. I hope that every penny ... I hope that every penny that they've ..

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre formally announced his retirement Thursday in a news conference at Lambeau Field.

One of the most exciting and productive signal callers in pro football annals, Favre completes his 17-year career as the NFL's all-time leader in every significant career passing category - touchdowns (442), completions (5,377), attempts (8,758) and yards (61,655), plus wins (160).

"He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League," said General Manager Ted Thompson. "He is able to walk away from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do that. The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever.

"Brett's many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record, plus his consecutive starts streak, which ..

Ron Wolf Conference Call Transcript - March 4

(What was your reaction to the news?)
A friend of mine told me about it this morning here at the complex, the community I live in, and I was very surprised when I heard that. But as I have an opportunity to reflect on it during the course of this day, to me, Brett always played with such a great amount of passion, and if he no longer has that, then it's a wise decision.

(Do you recall going down on the field in Atlanta to watch him warm up before that game in 1991?)
I do. It was my first game with the Packers in 1991, it was a game in Atlanta, and I was told if I wanted to see Brett, if I remember the Atlanta staff, which was beneficial to me in the long run, but if I wanted to see Brett Favre throw, I'd have to look at him now, because they wouldn't let him throw during the team period. So I started to head down to the field to do that, but I never got down there. But, what I did learn from that situation was we could acquire Brett Favr..

Good afternoon. I'll make a statement, and then I'll be happy to take questions from everybody. First of all, I would like to on behalf of the organization thank Brett Favre for the tremendous contributions he made to the Green Bay Packers through the years. I don't think there is any doubt that he will go down as the greatest player in the history of this wonderful organization, and his accomplishments for the Packers will be treasured forever. I always told people I thought it was such an honor to watch him play, and I said you know we're all going to look back someday and say how fortunate we were to see Brett Favre and this wonderful career, and that the last time he went down the tunnel, it'd be a sad day for the Green Bay Packers but it would also be a sad day for the National Football League, and I truly feel that way. He brought enthusiasm to the game, almost a child-like atmosphere, and he had fun doing it. I think fans appreciated that. It took some of the professional out ..

His personality and love for the game allows him to become an icon to all sports fans all around the world. I think we're all a little bit disappointed, but at the same time we respect Brett's decision, and this was his decision. After those remarks, we're certainly open to taking a few questions.

(When did you hear from Brett and what exactly did he say?)
Thompson: I'll let Mike field that since he talked to him probably the most over the ..

Statement From Packers General Manager Ted Thompson:

"Brett Favre has informed us of his intention to retire from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do that.

"The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them, that will live on forever. Brett's many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record, plus his consecutive starts streak, which may never be duplicated.

"The uniqueness of Brett Favre - his personality, charisma and love of the game - undoubtedly will leave him as one of the enduring figures in NFL history."

**

Details of Brett Favre's availability to discuss his decision are still to be determined, and will be announced once set.

Packers Trade Williams To Cleveland

The Green Bay Packers Saturday traded DT Corey Williams to the Cleveland Browns for a second-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. The transaction was announced by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

A sixth-round draft pick by Green Bay in 2004 out of Arkansas State, Williams spent the past four seasons with the Packers, serving as a versatile player in the team's defensive line rotation.

Williams played in 56 games with Green Bay, making 20 starts. He totaled 156 tackles and 17 sacks. In 2007, Williams played in all 16 games, including nine starts, while establishing career bests for tackles (51) and sacks (7-tie).

The trade of Williams to Cleveland provides Green Bay with the 56th overall pick in the April 26-27 NFL Draft, giving the Packers three choices within the first 60 selections (also Nos. 30 and 60).
