Packers Notebook - Ignoring The Hype

Without even playing a game, the Packers emerged from the bye week atop the NFC with a 6-1 record. And while they aren't complaining about their view from the top, they aren't celebrating it either.

More times than they probably care to count, the Packers have been reminded this week that they control their own destiny and can secure homefield advantage throughout the playoffs by winning out the rest of the season. But that's the kind of news that's only attractive when Santa is running on rooftops in late December. When pumpkins still grace porches and there nine more games left on the schedule, it means next to nothing.

"I think it's way too early to be talking about anything in regard to homefield advantage," Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said Wednesday. "We're not even halfway through the season yet. It's not even part of the conversation."

The idea dancing through the imaginations of Packers fans everywhere is that homefield advantage is as g..

Although the Titletown Atrium is still in development, thanks to the latest 360-degree photos at the Packers' official website, fans can get an immediate look at the space that will eventually house various interactive displays and be the gateway to a new Hall of Fame when it becomes operational in 2003.

Also made available today are photos of the Packers' practice fields, just the latest 360-degree images to make their debuts at Packers.com.
Powered by Quicktime, the interactive photos allow the viewer to control the image, zooming in and out, rotating back and forth in any direction, to create the feeling of actually being there.

Favre Continues Rehab, Hopes To Start

Brett Favre didn't see any live action in the Packers' first practice since the bye week Wednesday, but even if it's too soon to say definitively that he will be the team's starting quarterback Monday night against the Miami Dolphins, it's also too soon to say that he won't.

Back from a five-day layoff, during which Favre rehabbed his sprained left knee at the University of Southern Mississippi, near his offseason home in Hattiesburg, Miss., Favre did some running Wednesday morning and then practiced his quarterback drops at the afternoon practice.

"Today was just kind of a small step," Favre said. "Maybe I could have done more, but I don't know that for sure. Believe it or not, I'm taking the doctor's advice and taking it slow. From my standpoint it feels like I can go, like full-steam, and I know that's pushing it."

Favre is listed as 'questionable' on the team's injury report, meaning there is a 50-percent chance that he will play Monday night.

For those of you who have ever wanted to peek inside the mind of a Packers player, here's your chance. For those who wish they knew more about a player than his statistics and position on the depth chart, this is for you.

It was with those desires in mind that Packers.com peppered several Packers players with a series of Random Questions. Here's what happened when we put linebacker Nate Wayne in the hot seat:
What's your favorite TV Show?
"Law and Order, I just got a thing for police shows. NYPD Blue, anything else you can name, CHiPS."
What's your favorite type of food, and can you prepare it?
"Lasagna, when I don't cook it. I can only cook enough to get by -- just enough for myself."

Do you play videogames?
"Now I do. Since training camp started up I've been playing that new Tiger Woods golf. I like the match play in that game."

Favre Still Expects To Start Against Miami

Fresh off four hours of rehab, Brett Favre met with the media Wednesday afternoon and reiterated his intentions to start the Packers' upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins, November 4.

This only days after Favre's brilliant 2002 season -- if not his entire legendary career -- seemed in peril after a third-quarter sack by LaVar Arrington last Sunday caused Favre's left knee to bend in ways the body never intended.

The spill was nasty, but the result was only a sprained lateral collateral ligament (LCL).

"I was tempted to try 7-on-7 (practice drills) today, but (trainers) said it probably wasn't a good idea," Favre said.

Actually, Favre was only kidding about his request to practice -- or at least he said he was. Although he admitted that was sick of the training room long before his injury required him to spend extra time there, Favre isn't about to do anything that would risk his immediate return.

"In this case, I know that it's better..

Favre Walks Away, Again

Early in the 2000 film Unbreakable, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) sits on a hospital examining table and listens to the startling news that not only is he the sole survivor of a train wreck, but that he has emerged from the catastrophe without a single scratch.

It would be easy to dismiss the scene as just the stuff of movies, except that for so many football seasons, for so many games, for so many hits, that was Brett Favre. He was the man who could run into a train-wreck tackle and walk away unscathed. He was, in a word, unbreakable.

And then came October 20, 2002. Then came LaVar Arrington, untouched up the middle. Then came a twisting tackle and a popping sensation in Favre's leg. And then came a moment that Packers fans hadn't quite seen before.

Tossed to the turf, Favre didn't get up. At least not at first.

Suddenly the impossible had come true, like something out of a movie. Except unlike the M. Night Shyamalan film, Packers fans w..

Packers Serve Lunch, Smiles

The Packers didn't hold practice Tuesday, but that didn't keep Andy Eby from taking a few hits.

In fact, on a chilly autumn morning, sweat poured down Eby's face like it was the middle of training camp. But it wasn't football Eby was playing at Holy Family School in Green Bay, it was a more simplistic game, appropriately titled, "I Have The Ball, And You Can't Get It."

On another area of the blacktop, Marco Rivera tossed passes to a gaggle of young girls with the giggles, Ryan Longwell booted footballs to eager return men, and Javon Walker quarterbacked a game of two-hand touch.

Inside, several of their teammates served lunch.

Craig Nall passed out cartons of milk. Ahman Green and Paris Lenon divvyed out buns. Aaron Kampman tried to hand out hotdogs, but struggled to keep up with Cletidus Hunt, who was offering bratwurst.
Favre: MRI Confirms LCL Sprain

An MRI performed on Brett Favre's injured left knee Monday confirmed team physician Dr. Patrick McKenzie's initial diagnosis of a sprained lateral collateral ligament (LCL), Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman said.

In addition, the MRI revealed no cartilage or anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage. That's positive news for the Packers, who could see Favre recover in time to start their next game against the Miami Dolphins, November 4.

"It looked fairly bad on the field yesterday," Sherman said of Favre's injury. "This guy is just a very resilient individual and we're very fortunate that he's okay."

With the Packers approaching their bye weekend, Favre will undergo regular treatment this week. The Packers practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week and are then off until Wednesday, October 30.

Asked if Favre would be able to participate in next Wednesday's practice, Sherman said he would play it by ear.

Favre's Status Uncertain

Less than two hours after he'd been carted off Lambeau Field with a sprained left knee, Brett Favre said it was too soon to be able to say whether or not he would be able to play in the Packers' next game.

Thankfully for the Packers, there are two weeks to make that determination.

Coming up on their bye week, the Packers don't play again until they host the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football, November 4.

"It's an injury, from what I understand, it is possible to play with, especially since we don't play again for two weeks," Favre said. "I'm not going to sit here and say I'm going to play (against Miami). I expect to, but it's just kind of a wait and see thing."

Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman also said that he had not ruled out the possibility of Favre being able to start the Packers' next game. Favre will undergo an MRI Monday, after which a better assessment of the injury would be available.

The injury occurred on the Packers..

Packers-Redskins Press Box Notes

-A PACKERS VICTORY today would give Mike Sherman the longest winning streak of his three-year tenure as Green Bay's head coach - five in a row. His current four-game skein matches his best previous streak, four straight to end the 2000 season.

Sherman, just for the record, is 1-0 against the Redskins, the Green and Gold having defeated Washington 37-0 on the latter's September 24 visit to Lambeau Field last year.

-HISTORIC DAY - FAVRE TIES WOOD: Today is yet another historic day for quarterback Brett Favre. He is playing in his 166th consecutive game and thus tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Willie Wood (1960-71) for second place in Packers annals in most consecutive games played.

Now, Forrest Gregg (1956, 1958-70) is the only player in team annals to have played in more consecutive games (187).

Favre also ties Wood with the sixth-most career games played in team history (166).

AP Story: Packers Defeat Redskins, 30-9

Brett Favre hobbled off the field, leaving the Green Bay Packers to wonder how long they might be without their star quarterback.

Favre, who started for the 164th consecutive time Sunday, sprained his left knee when he was sacked by LaVar Arrington in Green Bay's 30-9 victory over the Washington Redskins.

The Pro Bowl quarterback came out in the third quarter, was carted off the sideline and did not return. There was no immediate word on the severity of his injury.

Ahman Green had the first three-touchdown rushing performance of his career, helping the Packers (6-1) to their fifth straight victory.

Green ran for 88 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 24, 2 and 8 yards, the last one following Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey's fifth sack and third fumble, which was recovered by Rod Walker at the Washington 23 in the fourth quarter.

In his second career start, Ramsey overthrew his targe..

Way back in the preseason, Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman knew days like these would come.

He didn't know the who, the how, or the when, but he knew that at some point during the 2002 season, injury's cold hand would grasp the Packers and test their mettle.

So he prepared his team not only physically, but mentally, for times like these when the injury report was adorned with names that would headline a fantasy football draft.

"You have to be able to handle adversity to be successful, so you have to plan for adversity," Sherman said Wednesday. "I talked about injuries I don't know how many times to our players in the preseason. 'Hey, we're going to be injured. We're going to be in a lull in our season. We're going to have a bunch of guys out and somebody's going to step up. Our 53rd player (on the roster), is just as important as our No. 1 player.'"

It was a speech Sherman made before the roster was even cut to 53, and one he kept repeating..

Favre Credits Receivers For Production

You'd think after three MVP awards, two Super Bowls, 165 consecutive games played, 40,244 yards passing and 301 touchdowns, Brett Favre would have run out of ways to amaze.

But he hasn't. After more than a decade leading the Green Bay Packers, Favre is off to another head-turning start.

His 1,617 yards passing this season rank fourth in the NFL behind only Buffalo's Drew Bledsoe (2,016), New England's Tom Brady (1,749) and Oakland's Rich Gannon (1,687).

His 14 touchdown passes tie him for second with Bledsoe and Brady, trailing only Kansas City's Trent Green, who has 15.

His 102.5 passer rating is the best in the NFL (more than 35 attempts).

But it's not Favre's big numbers that are raising eyebrows, it's a small one.

Through six games, Favre has thrown a mere three interceptions. A number made all the more striking considering that he tossed six picks in the Packers' season-ending playoff loss to St. Louis last year.

Packers Notebook -- Holliday To Return

Holliday To Return

For what seemed like the first time in ages, Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman was able to deliver some positive news about the team's injury situation Monday.

Sherman said that defensive end Vonnie Holliday is expected to return to practice this week and might be able to play Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

That puts Holliday's recovery well ahead of schedule. Originally, Holliday was thought to be sidelined 6-8 weeks -- if not for the entire season -- after suffering a pectoral tear making a tackle against the Detroit Lions, September 22.

"He's been a fast healer in his history, and our doctors are very conservative, so it doesn't surprise me that he might be ready for this ballgame," Sherman said. "I think it's realistic (he could play Sunday), but we'll know more on Wednesday. He has to play with a brace that will limit his motion to a certain degree, so we'll see where he is Wednesday."

AP Story: Packers Defeat Patriots, 28-10

Brett Favre showed Tom Brady how it's done.

Favre threw three touchdown passes, giving him 301 for his career and leading the Green Bay Packers past the bumbling New England Patriots 28-10. Brady, the Super Bowl MVP, threw three interceptions.

Favre moved into third place, ahead of John Elway's 300 scoring passes, and trails only Dan Marino's 420 and Fran Tarkenton's 342.

Favre made his 163rd consecutive start, a record for NFL quarterbacks, while Brady's was only his 23rd as a pro, including playoffs.

Brady became the starter last year in his second season after Drew Bledsoe was hurt in the second game. Brady led the Patriots to the title and then Bledsoe was traded to Buffalo.

Brady played well in this season's first three games, all wins, but since then has struggled with the rest of the Patriots (3-3).

The Packers (5-1) won their fourth straight as Ahman Green rushed for 136 yards and scored his first two touchdowns of t..

Glenn Returns To New England

For Packers wide receiver Terry Glenn, his career with the New England Patriots was both the best and worst of times. What started in 1996 with an NFL rookie record 90 receptions and a Super Bowl appearance deteriorated into a messy web of injuries, failed and missed drug tests, allegations and lies, all in six short seasons.

The story of Glenn's plight has been told time and time again and yet the picture is still unclear. It's a 'he said, they said' drama between Glenn and the Patriots in which few, if any, know the whole truth. The opinions are so many they should come with a book depository and a grassy knoll.

But none of that matters now, or at least it shouldn't. Glenn has moved on, the Patriots too. Only this weekend Glenn makes his return to New England, where he will play in front of the Foxboro fans for the first time since they cheered his departure.

"They'll probably boo me and have their little comments as we come out of the tunnel," Glenn..

Packers Notebook - Injuries Aplenty

Injuries Aplenty

As if it wasn't troubling enough that the Packers' injury report is longer than a list of Elizabeth Taylor's ex-husbands, the names therein are the same ones Packers fans like to see on the backs of replica jerseys: Holliday, Johnson, McKenzie, Sharper, even -- brace yourself -- Favre.

True, the right-handed Brett Favre is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the defending Super Bowl champions with a swollen left elbow. True, even a swollen right elbow probably wouldn't keep the Packers' iron man -- 164 consecutive games played, and counting -- out of the lineup.

But if you're among those who, like the Packers, entered the season with visions of a trip to San Diego in late January, it's not the way you would have written it.

Certainly it's not the hand GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman hoped to be dealt. But even with starters Joe Johnson and Mark Tauscher lost for the season, and fellow starters Antuan Edwards and Vonnie..

Packers Sign DB Westbrook; Place Johnson On Injured Reserve

The Green Bay Packers have signed free agent defensive back Bryant Westbrook, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced Wednesday.

Westbrook takes the place of injured defensive end Joe Johnson on the Packers' 53-man roster. Johnson tore his left triceps Monday night against the Bears and was placed on injured reserve.

The 6-foot, 201-pound Westbrook spent his previous five seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he made a total of 12 interceptions and 208 tackles.

The Packers also announced the termination of three practice squad players, wide receiver Corey Parchman, defensive end John Gilmore (injured) and offensive lineman Al Jackson.

In their place, the Packers re-signed defensive back Todd Franz, and added defensive back Brandon Jennings, a third-year free agent recently cut by the Oakland Raiders, and offensive lineman Mitch White, a rookie free agent out of Oregon State, who has been on the rosters of the Ne..

Johnson Out For The Season

Tuesday, further tests on defensive end Joe Johnson's injured left arm showed what the team had already feared -- a torn triceps that will require surgery to repair and force Johnson to miss the remainder of the 2002 season.

Johnson suffered the injury in the third quarter of the Packers' 34-21 defeat of the Chicago Bears, not long after supplying the hit on quarterback Jim Miller that resulted in Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's 72-yard interception return for a touchdown.

A two-time Pro Bowler who spent the previous eight years with the New Orleans Saints, Johnson was just beginning to come into his own within the Packers' defensive scheme. A week earlier against the Carolina Panthers, Johnson was in on five tackles -- including a sack -- and was also responsible for a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

The loss of Johnson is especially damaging to the Packers, who are already without starting defensive end Vonnie Holliday. Holliday tore a pectoral muscle against..

Passion For The Game: Dawson's Favorite

Note: As high school quarterback Jonathon Moxon in the movie "Varsity Blues," actor James Van Der Beek admits he tried to model his game after his NFL idol, Brett Favre. "I always pictured my character in that movie as a Favre-type quarterback," says Van Der Beek. Van Der Beek is best known for his role as the title character in "Dawson's Creek," which is in its sixth season on the WB. He also stars in a new movie, "The Rules of Attraction," which is in theaters Oct. 11.

As a kid growing up in Connecticut, I got my first taste of football from watching it on TV. But it was what I heard as much as what I saw that drew me in. I remember hearing the game on TV before I ever knew what it was - the excitement in the voices of the announcers, the sound of helmets and shoulder pads colliding, the swell of crowd noise almost drowning out the snap count.

And it was TV that led me to become a Green Bay Packers fan. I remember picking the Packers as my favorite..

AP Story: Favre Leads Packers To 34-21 Victory Over The Bears

Brett Favre insists he doesn't save his best for the Chicago Bears. It just seems that way.

Favre passed for three first-half touchdowns Monday night to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 34-21 victory over the Bears, running his career record to 17-4 against Chicago.

"To be totally honest, I don't treat this game any different from any other,'' he said. "Maybe for our fans and for the media, it is a bigger game than it is when we play everyone else. But as a team you should be playing every game like it's the Super Bowl.''

Needing just 262 yards coming in to reach 40,000 career yards, Favre got there by halftime. He threw an 85-yard TD pass to Donald Driver in the first quarter - the second longest of his career - and the Packers (4-1) took a 24-14 halftime lead.

"I would never in a million years think we'd have a first quarter like we did today, but you never know in this league. This one ranks near the top,'' Favre said. "You have (287) 300 yard..

More Answers From Packers.com

Which Packers are ranked in the top-three for most receptions in a year? I know that Sterling Sharpe has the record, but who are the next two? Thanks -- Tim Nash (Toronto, Canada)

Sterling Sharpe is responsible for four of the top-five seasons by a Packers receiver in terms of receptions. The next few names to appear on that list are Robert Brooks, Antonio Freeman, Edgar Bennett, Don Hutson and Bill Schroeder, respectively.

The top-10 looks like this: 1. Sterling Sharpe 112 catches (1993); 2. Sterling Sharpe 108 (1992); 3. Robert Brooks 102 (1995); 4. Sterling Sharpe 94 (1994); 5. Sterling Sharpe 90 (1989); 6. Antonio Freeman 84 (1998); 7. Antonio Freeman 81 (1997); 8. Edgar Bennett 78 (1994); 9t. Don Hutson 74 (1942), Antonio Freeman 74 (1999), Bill Schroeder 74 (1999).

It should be noted that Hutson's 74 receptions were amassed over an 11-game season, and that Antonio Freeman's 84 receptions in 1998 were compiled over 15 games. All others abo..

Packers-Bears Notebook

Change Of Scenery

With the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears fighting for first place in the NFC North on ABC's Monday Night Football, the stage has been set for yet another memorable edition -- the 163rd -- of one of the greatest rivalries in sports.

Only problem is, they set the wrong stage.

While 31-year-old Soldier Field undergoes a makeover that will leave it looking little like its former self, the Bears have been displaced 135 miles south to Champaign, where they will play all of their home games this season from Memorial Stadium, on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Built in 1923 to honor the Illinois men and women who lost their lives during World War I, Memorial Stadium is not without history. But it couldn't be any more foreign to the 81-year-old relationship between the Packers and Bears.
Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman this week said that he'd miss playing at Solider Field, not because the Packers have..

Packers Voted 'America's Favorite Team'

Forget about the Dallas Cowboys, thanks to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive the Green Bay Packers can now call themselves "America's Team."

After numerous runner-up finishes, the Packers ended the Cowboys' nine-year run as "America's favorite professional football team," according to The Harris Poll, which surveyed a national sample of 2,203 adults between August 26 and September 3, 2002.

Just less than one in five (17 percent) of those surveyed who said they followed professional football named the Packers their first or second favorite team. The San Francisco 49ers were the second-most popular team at 14 percent, with the Oakland Raiders third (12 percent) and the Cowboys falling all the way to fourth, where they tied with the St. Louis Rams (11 percent).

Interestingly, the Packers finished first despite their lowest rating over the last three polls, having received 20 percent of the votes in 1998 and 18 percent in 1999 (the survey ..

Glenn Diagnosed With Post-Traumatic Migraines

The Packers might not yet know all the proper solutions to wide receiver Terry Glenn's recent ailments, but thanks to his trip to New York Tuesday, they at least feel comfortable that they have pinpointed the problem.

After meeting with a neurologist, Glenn has been diagnosed with "post-traumatic migraines," Packers GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman explained to the media Wednesday, meaning that Glenn's symptoms of migraine headaches and nausea are likely the result of an earlier head trauma.

While the exact event of that head trauma cannot be determined with any certainty, Glenn's symptoms date back to the season opener, September 8, when he took a hard blow to the head after a catch.

"He's had headaches since the Atlanta game," Sherman said. "He has not mentioned them to us until last week, however. He's just been dealing with them, but then they got to the point where he had a hard time dealing."
