The Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer, a motorcycle ride to benefit cancer patients and families throughout Northeastern Wisconsin, presented checks totaling $65,650 to seven local cancer support organizations Wednesday at the Lambeau Field Atrium.

The funds distributed were raised in last year's Cruise for Cancer, the third annual event which drew nearly 800 participants on more than 500 motorcycles. The fourth annual ride is scheduled for Saturday, June 9.

Parins, the Packers director of corporate security and a cancer survivor himself, presented the checks to the following organizations: Compassionate Care Fund (to benefit St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette and Door County Memorial Hospital in Sturgeon Bay), the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System at St. Vincent, Families of Children with Cancer, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Ribbon of Hope, Unity Hospice, and the St. Vincent Pediatric Center.

Parins noted how much the event has grown in its three years, from raising $27,500 its first year to more than twice that now. He hopes to get perhaps as many as 1,000 people for this year's ride.

"We have grown each year and I have established some very, very special friendships," Parins said. "The one goal of all of us was to put smiles on people's faces and their families that are dealing with cancer.

"The heart of this ride is really about the people, people that are helping other people."

For this year's ride, pre-registration forms are currently available through www.cruiseforcancer.org or at Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo and Vandervest Custom Cycles in Green Bay. A $10 donation per person is required to participate in the ride. Riders who pre-register by June 5 are eligible for a chance to win a prize.

On the day of the ride, registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the Lambeau Field parking lot near the Mills Fleet Farm Gate at the southwest corner of the stadium. Registration also will occur at Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo beginning at 9 a.m.

The ride will leave Lambeau Field at approximately 11 a.m. Packers players and personnel will be on hand to make appearances prior to the ride.

The first leg of the ride will lead to Vandervest Harley-Davidson in Peshtigo. Upon arrival in Peshtigo, food and beverage options, provided by Kroll's West, will be available for purchase. Elite Music Services will provide music for the gathering before the riders head back to Green Bay.

Following the completion of the ride, a tailgate party will be held beginning at 3 p.m. in the Lambeau Field parking lot. A raffle, auction and music will be part of the festivities. The tailgate party is free and open to everyone, not just riders.
