Notebook: Top Two QBs Back To Full Duty

At the mandatory minicamp two weeks ago, neither of the Packers' top two quarterbacks - Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers - were medically cleared to fully participate.

But they're both full-speed-ahead now.

Favre, who was recovering from offseason ankle surgery, and Rodgers, who was battling back from a broken foot, both were limited in the May minicamp but took snaps in team (11-on-11) drills during Thursday's OTA workout, the first of four open to the media and public.

Both quarterbacks showed physically they were in shape during the minicamp, and now both are successfully getting their timing down with the live (though non-padded) snaps.

"I'm doing as much as I can and I've had no pain, so it's good to get back out there," Rodgers said. "I've been working on a lot of things, arm strength especially, and I feel like I've made some good strides there."

Rodgers took all the first-team snaps in the first OTA on Wednesday before Favre arrived, ..

Harlan Confident In Moving Forward

Green Bay Packers Chairman of the Board Bob Harlan said Wednesday that despite the sudden change in the leadership succession plan this past weekend, the organization is ready to move ahead, and will do so fairly quickly.

"We're not in disarray," Harlan said, speaking to reporters after the quarterly meeting of the Board of Directors. "We're very well-organized and ready to move forward. My only concern is we don't hit a gap where we lose a step or two. We need to keep moving forward as quickly as we can."

Harlan, who originally was set to retire on Wednesday, instead received unanimous approval from the Board to remain in his position until his successor is named. Team president John Jones was set to assume the role but was put on an indefinite paid leave of absence on Saturday for what Harlan and the team's Executive Committee cited as "management issues."

Harlan said he expects to remain in the position for less than a full year, and the Executive Commit..

OTAs Will Focus On Schemes, Fundamentals

The Green Bay Packers begin a series of 12 organized team activities (OTAs) on Wednesday, and the coaching staff has primarily two goals in mind during the sessions.

First, the team will install its entire offensive and defensive packages for the 2007 season. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said that two of the nine installations were done during the May 18-20 minicamp, and the OTAs will cover the other seven, as well as include periodic reviews.

Second, the coaches want to see the players focus on individual fundamentals, such as positioning, footwork and reads-and-reactions, so the team has a solid fundamental foundation heading into training camp in late July.

"We have some young guys and good competition at a lot of positions, so the fundamental work is going to be very important," defensive coordinator Bob Sanders said. "That's how we're going to win the games, being sound fundamentally at every single position."

The 12 OTAs are scheduled for May 30-..

The Game I'll Never Forget: Desmond Bishop

Make a mistake, and all an athlete asks for is a chance for redemption. Some way to atone for the miscue.

That's what makes last season's Pac-10 showdown with Washington the most memorable game of former Cal linebacker Desmond Bishop's career.

Bishop, a sixth-round pick by the Packers in last month's NFL Draft, vividly remembers as the Golden Bears' game with the rival Huskies on Oct. 21, 2006, went into overtime that he had to do something to win it. Just had to.

Because moments earlier, in front of the home fans in Berkeley, Calif., he had made a mistake that could have lost it.

With Cal leading 24-17 and Washington down to its final play, Huskies quarterback Carl Bonnell launched a Hail Mary from 40 yards out that Bishop was in perfect position to knock down and end the game. But Bishop mistakenly tipped the ball right to Washington receiver Marlon Wood, who scored an improbable touchdown to send the game to overtime.

After losing the c..

NFL Europa Diary - Adam Stenavich, Part II

Adam Stenavich, a native of Marshfield, Wis., has started five of six games at left guard for the Amsterdam Admirals, and his team enters this weekend 3-3. Originally signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers on May 5, 2006, Stenavich came to the Packers last November as a member of the team's practice squad.

Amsterdam hosts Cologne Friday at 1 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on NFL Network on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT (tape delay).

Packers.com will post periodic diary entries from Stenavich about his experiences in Europe with his "springtime" team. Here is his second entry, in which Stenavich talks about the last couple of weeks, which included missing a game due to injury.

I am working back from a foot injury I suffered against Hamburg two weeks ago. I will probably suit up, but won't play unless I'm needed. It's tough because our team is clicking on offense, but I'll bounce back.

Healthy Jennings, Newcomer Jones Should Boost Passing Game

While much has been said during the offseason about the wide receiver the Packers didn't acquire, last weekend's minicamp put significant focus on two offensive weapons that have been added to the passing game since the end of the 2006 season.

One is Greg Jennings, or a healthy Greg Jennings that is. That's a weapon the Packers didn't have for the final 10 1/2 games last season.

The other is James Jones, a third-round draft choice who was doing his best to impersonate the 2006 second-round pick, Jennings, at least as far as first impressions go.

Though he never used the ankle injury sustained in Miami in Week 7 as an excuse, Jennings clearly wasn't the same player from then on in his rookie season. Because of other injuries and youth at the position, his return to the field just two weeks later was a sign more of the team's need for his skills, even at less than 100 percent, than the fact that he was actually healthy.

But the bum ankle is long behi..

Packers To Be Featured On Japanese TV

The international appeal of the Green Bay Packers has extended across the Pacific Ocean.

The Packers haven't actually set foot in Japan since 1998, when they played a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Tokyo. But any fans in Japan who remember that visit might appreciate the special program coming their way soon on Japanese television.

Producer Naoyuki Kubo and cameraman Takue Saijo, working for a production company called F&F Inc., spent a few days prior to this year's NFL Draft in Green Bay, working on a portion of a special documentary on the NFL.

The show, slated to air on the Japanese satellite channel BS-i on May 27, is an in-depth look at the fairness and competitive balance of the NFL. It focuses on the draft, the league's way of fairly distributing incoming talent, and upon leaving Green Bay the F&F crew was headed to Radio City Music Hall in New York City to continue working on their piece.

But first, Kubo and Saijo got an u..

Dear Andrew: The "Ice Bowl" indeed was filmed and a video of that classic contest is available for viewing in the Packers Hall of Fame during daily business hours, at no additional charge above regular admission. The HOF, of course, is located within the Packers administration building (1265 Lombardi Ave., Green Bay).
NFL Europa Week 6: WR Brewster Still Among League Leaders

Wide receiver Carlton Brewster remained among the NFL Europa league leaders after this past weekend's games.

Brewster had two catches for 68 yards for the Berlin Thunder in its 35-7 loss to the Frankfurt Galaxy. That leaves him tied for first in the league in receptions (28) and alone in first in receiving yards (440) through Week 6.

Brewster accounted for all but four of Berlin's 72 yards on their lone touchdown drive. He opened the eight-play march with a 35-yard catch and later had a 33-yard reception to convert a third-and-25 and give Berlin a first-and-goal on the 6.

Berlin teammate Tim Goodwell came off the bench at linebacker and recorded four solo tackles, one pass defensed and a blocked punt. The big special teams play came in the fourth quarter and gave Berlin a first down on the Frankfurt 35, but the Thunder turned the ball over on downs.

Among other Packers playing in NFL Europa, safety Alvin Nnabuife came off the bench for the Cologne ..

Notebook: Depth At CB Makes For Tough Battle

With veterans Al Harris and Charles Woodson firmly entrenched as the starting cornerbacks on the Green Bay Packers' defense, there are two interesting competitions unfolding amongst the backups behind them.

First, which corner will win the job of nickel back, the fifth defensive back for passing situations. And second, which of those competing for that nickel slot may eventually step forward into starting roles in future seasons.

With Harris (minor back injury) and Woodson (excused for an event) both absent from the final minicamp practice on Sunday, four different cornerbacks were rotating in with the No. 1 defense, all trying to stake an early claim to that nickel job.

Third-year pro Patrick Dendy, who took over at nickel last year when Ahmad Carroll was released, along with second-year men Will Blackmon and Jarrett Bush and free-agent pickup Frank Walker all carried over some off-field competition during the offseason strength and conditioning program to..

Franks Leaving Last Year In The Past

Bubba Franks will be the first to admit he didn't perform at his usual level in 2006. But the eighth-year veteran will be the last to say that he's on the downside of his career.

In visiting with reporters during minicamp this weekend, Franks said he's "on a mission" to be the tight end Packers fans enjoyed watching his first six years in the NFL. The former first-round draft pick didn't make any bold predictions, like he's heading back to the Pro Bowl or going to catch so many touchdowns, but that's not Franks' style.

A straightforward, no-nonsense guy, he simply stated that he's putting last year behind him and doing nothing but looking forward.

"It was just one of those years," said Franks, whose 25 catches for 232 yards and no touchdowns last season were career-lows for a full slate of games played. "You go six years of being as good as you can, and hey, it's just a bump in the road, something that happened. You get it out of your system and you keep mo..

NFL Europa Diary - Carlton Brewster, Part III

Wide receiver Carlton Brewster is one of a handful of Green Bay Packers allocated to NFL Europa this spring.

Brewster is a starter for the Berlin Thunder, and after five games he currently leads the league in receptions (26) and receiving yards (372). Over the past two games, both against Cologne, he caught a 55-yard TD pass but then was held to just one catch for 20 yards in the rematch.

Berlin travels to Frankfurt in Week 6 on Sunday. The game can be seen on NFL Network at midnight (CT).

Packers.com will post periodic diary entries from Brewster about his experiences in Europe with his "springtime" team. Here is the third installment:

I got my first touchdown in our first game against Cologne. I was happy, felt like I got the monkey off my back. We went into Cologne and beat a very good team. But this past weekend, they came here and beat us pretty good, so the series is 1-1. They have a very good defense.

Notebook: Top Two QBs Limited, But In Great Shape

As expected, both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers were limited in their participation in the first minicamp practice on Friday, performing individual and seven-on-seven drills but being held out of the team (11-on-11) periods.

Both quarterbacks said they feel fine, but with Favre recovering from offseason ankle surgery and Rodgers coming back from a broken foot, the coaching staff is simply being cautious as they complete the final stages of rehab.

Favre said he hadn't picked up a football since the season finale last year, and he was clearly taking it easy on most of his throws. He's been working out back home in Mississippi, and Rodgers said Favre was down under 220 pounds.

Meanwhile Rodgers was putting noticeable zip on the ball and spent the offseason getting himself in prime shape as well.

"He's had a lot of progress in the offseason program and the conditioning," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I think his arm looks stronger than ever."

Golden Girls and Fans Enjoy Evening in Packers Hall of Fame

It was an evening of storytelling and a stroll down memory lane this past Wednesday night at the Packers Hall of Fame as new exhibits celebrating past cheerleading squads were formally unveiled.

Prominent in the evening's festivities were members of the Golden Girls cheerleading squad, a group that performed from 1961 through 1972. More than 50 former members of the group, many from around the country, were on hand to see each other in a reunion of sorts, as well as treat other Hall of Fame guests to stories from their days on the squad.

As guests entered the Hall of Fame, they received a picture of the Golden Girls and were able to view poster boards with pictures and news accounts of cheerleaders past. In the Hall's theatre, archivist Tom Murphy introduced many of the ladies and had them share several stories from the squad's days on the sidelines, as well as what it was like to follow the Packers during that era.
Favre Denies Trade Request, Wants To Lead Team's Young Talent

Quarterback Brett Favre denied on Friday that he ever asked for a trade from the Green Bay Packers, and he emphasized that he hopes his experience can make a difference on a young but talented team in 2007.

In his press conference on Friday prior to the first practice of the team's mandatory minicamp, Favre set the record straight about reports this past week that he had asked for a trade after the NFL Draft over his frustration at the team's inability to add veteran wide receiver Randy Moss as an offensive weapon.

"Never was a trade ever mentioned, requested, I just don't know where it came from," Favre said. "That's not true. Frustrated at this point last week? Yeah, but I'm here and ready to move forward."

Favre said he's over his frustration, and his relationships with General Manager Ted Thompson and Head Coach Mike McCarthy are fine. He also said his desire initially to skip this weekend's minicamp had to do with simply being bored with minicamps afte..

McCarthy Wants Strong First Step At Minicamp

Thus far in the offseason, the progress made by the Green Bay Packers has focused on individuals. This weekend at the mandatory minicamp, that focus on progress changes to the team as a whole.

With all but a handful of players participating in the team's strength and conditioning program since March 19, Head Coach Mike McCarthy believes the individual gains players have made will be evident this weekend, whether it be the addition of muscle mass, improved speed and quickness, or just an overall better body shape.

Now, over the next three days in the first four practices in preparation for 2007, McCarthy wants to see those individual improvements translate into team progress in the form of sharper execution and an overall work ethic on the practice field.

"The practice environment gives you the opportunity to make progress toward playing at the highest level of productivity, when it's for real," McCarthy said.
Rayner Ready To Battle For Job

When the Packers drafted kicker Mason Crosby out of Colorado in the sixth round late last month, incumbent kicker Dave Rayner didn't even know about it until five days later.

That's because Rayner was on vacation and out of the country, with his cell phone turned off. Then he got a message the Friday following the draft notifying him about the fight he would have to keep his job, a battle that officially kicks off with the full-squad minicamp this weekend.

But don't mistake Rayner's disconnect at the time of the draft with a laissez-faire attitude toward the upcoming competition for the kicking job. He's ready, as well as confident he can improve on his 2006 performance.

"I'm getting stronger and better now than I was last season," said Rayner, who made 26 of 35 field goals (74.3 percent) in his first season as a full-time kicker. "I'm going to go into this season like he's going to have to kick really, really well to beat me out.

At Minicamp, Philbin To Continue Settling Into New Role

The Packers' 2007 rookies will practice for the first time with the veteran players at this weekend's mandatory minicamp.

Meanwhile, another kind of "rookie" will be adjusting to a new job, too.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will be conducting his first practices as a coordinator in the NFL, and while the 24-year coaching veteran has worked long and hard to get to this level in his career, he'll be starting over in some respects.

As the Packers conduct four practices and several meetings in their first official preparations for the 2007 season, Philbin sees one of his primary tasks as a fairly simple but nonetheless vital one - getting to know all of the offensive players.

Well-respected by the offensive linemen and tight ends he's worked with as a position coach the past four seasons, Philbin will put a premium on establishing similar relationships with everyone on offense, beginning this weekend.

"There are some guys on the team I do..

NFL Europa Week 5: Goodwell Continues Solid Play

Green Bay Packers linebacker Tim Goodwell had his second straight productive game in NFL Europa this past weekend despite Berlin's 24-10 loss to Cologne.

Goodwell did not start but came off the bench to record five tackles (three solo) and one pass defensed.

Two of his solo tackles came against running back A.J. Harris for no gain on a second-and-4 play and against running back Derrick Ross for a loss of 1 yard on a second-and-2. His pass defensed came against tight end Tony Curtis in the end zone and helped force Cologne to settle for a field goal.

Last week, Goodwell played for the first time this season since recovering from a back injury and led Berlin with 10 tackles and a pivotal forced fumble.

Among other Packers in NFL Europa in Week 5, wide receiver Carlton Brewster had one catch for 20 yards for Berlin. Despite his least productive game to date, Brewster still leads the league in receptions (26) and receiving yards (372).

Thompson Optimistic About 2007

Packers general manager Ted Thompson was unwavering Sunday in his belief that Green Bay is well positioned to make tangible on-field improvement in the upcoming NFL season.

"We are optimistic about the 2007 season," Thompson said. "We feel like we've had a great offseason program - our guys are getting bigger and stronger - and we'll improve from within. We're also excited about the players we've added through the draft and what those players will bring to our team."

Responding to reports out of Mississippi over the weekend that Packers quarterback Brett Favre was frustrated, Thompson indicated that Favre and the Packers organization hold many of the same goals.

"I think it's natural for a player to be frustrated from time to time - that's simply being human," said Thompson. "Everyone knows that Brett Favre is all about winning. As an organization, we share that commitment. And we want to win now."

NFL Europa Diary - Adam Stenavich, Part I

Adam Stenavich, a native of Marshfield, Wis., has started all four games at left guard for the Amsterdam Admirals, and his team enters this weekend 2-2. Originally signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers on May 5, 2006, Stenavich came to the Packers last November as a member of the team's practice squad.

Amsterdam travels to Hamburg Saturday for its Week 5 contest. The game can be seen on NFL Network at midnight CT (tape delay).

Packers.com will post periodic diary entries from Stenavich about his experiences in Europe with his "springtime" team. Here is his first entry, in which Stenavich talks about his first few months in NFL Europa.

At the end of the Packers season, I found out that I was probably going to play in NFL Europa. Then I got a call in mid-February from the team telling me I definitely was going. At first, I didn't really want to go, but the more I thought about, the more I knew it would be a great opportunity.

'Golden Girls' Event Slated For Wednesday

When word trickled down to Mary Jane Sorgel from Vince Lombardi that he would like a Packers cheerleading squad organized, the legendary head coach wasn't entirely clear on what he wanted.

But apparently he knew what he didn't want.

"We weren't the Dallas Cowgirls," said Sorgel, founder of The Golden Girls cheerleading squad that performed at Lambeau Field from 1961 through 1972. "We were wholesome Midwest girls, because Vince Lombardi did not like real short skirts. He liked the girls to be more modest, so that's the way we were."

Sorgel and more than 50 other original Golden Girls will be on hand Wednesday evening, May 8, to launch a new exhibit at the Packers Hall of Fame that celebrates various past cheerleading squads.

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Golden Girls in attendance will treat Hall of Fame visitors to stories of their cheerleading days as the exhibit is unveiled. Guests for the event also will receive a Golden Girls photo.

New Sod Being Unrolled At Lambeau

Watch the progress: Packers.com Lambeau Cam

**

Lambeau Field's brand new sod is being unrolled Thursday and Friday as another stage of Lambeau's makeover nears completion.

Thirteen refrigerated trucks from a sod farm in New Jersey, each carrying 32 rolls of Kentucky bluegrass sod, are arriving at Lambeau over the next two days to put the top layer on the playing surface that has had new drainage and heating systems installed over the past few months.

Each roll weighs between 1,200 and 1,300 pounds, which calculates to roughly half a million pounds of sod all-tolled.

"The sod looks terrific. It's great to see green in here again," said Allen Johnson, Packers field manager, in reference to the heavy labor that went into preparing Lambeau for this step.

Johnson said once the sod is laid it will need a few weeks to root in the new sand base, which was installed to improve drainage. With bett..

Position Switch Can Succeed With Players Like Hall

For a player to change positions from college to professional football, he has to possess certain qualities.

He must have a natural feel for the game of football, an understanding of X's and O's that goes beyond that of a specific position, and a love for the game that makes him desire to be on the field, no matter where he lines up.

In short, he has to call himself a football player first, rather than a running back or cornerback or tackle.

The Green Bay Packers believe that's what Korey Hall is and those are the attributes he has, so they're going to see if they can convert the Boise State linebacker to fullback. But the above description often applies to special teams standouts as well, so Hall will be given every opportunity to make his mark that way too.

"It's clearly a projection," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said of the role forecast for Hall, a sixth-round draft choice. "A lot of it has to do with his mental makeup."

Goodwell, Brewster Lead Berlin's Comeback

NFL Europa's Week 4 saw a lot of impact plays by Green Bay Packers, particularly in the game between the Berlin Thunder and Cologne Centurions.

In Berlin's 31-28 victory, which evened both teams' records at 2-2, linebacker Tim Goodwell and wide receiver Carlton Brewster both helped spark Berlin's comeback from a 28-14 second-half deficit.

Goodwell, playing in his first game of the season after recovering from a back injury, forced a fumble early in the fourth quarter with Berlin trailing 28-17. Three plays later, Brewster hauled in a 55-yard TD pass to pull the Thunder within 28-24 with 11:11 left.

With Cologne then driving for a potential game-clinching score, Goodwell forced another fumble, hitting running back A.J. Harris in the backfield for a 3-yard loss and popping the ball loose. The Thunder recovered with just under four minutes to play and drove 69 yards for the game-winning score.
Notebook: Rookies Try To Absorb It All

Not that anyone is holding it against them, but the first couple of days in the NFL for the Packers' rookies has been a bit overwhelming at times.

From getting fitted for equipment to taking their physicals to learning about Packer history and then studying their brand new playbook, there's a lot for the new crop of rookies to pack into this weekend's orientation camp.

The most challenging of all those activities is also probably the most important - learning the playbook - and all the players are getting a crash course in an introductory section of either offense or defense that they're trying to apply to the practice field as well as study up on their own.

"There was a lot of smoke going out of my ears yesterday, just hearing all of it," first-round draft pick and defensive tackle Justin Harrell said. "The playbook is thicker than anything I've seen in my life. It's going to take some time, take a lot of studying and hard work, but I should have it down i..
Berlin travels to Cologne in Week 4 on Saturday. The game can be seen on NFL Network at 11 a.m. (CT).
After nearly 1,200 miles, the second "Green Bay Packers Tailgate Tour" pulled into Lambeau Field, its mission of reaching out and saying thanks to the fans fully fulfilled.

The group was happy to have visited some new areas of the state, including Superior, Rice Lake, Eau Claire, Black River Falls, McFarland and Racine.

In addition to the organization being able to express its appreciation to the fans in person, the Tailgate Tour helped to raise more than $80,000 for the non-profit organizations involved.

"I thought it was a huge success," said Bob Harlan. "It was a great opportunity to reach out to fans in a different setting. They are so appreciative and loyal, and to be able to say thanks face-..
