Packers Awarded Compensatory 4th Round Draft Pick

The Packers have been awarded a compensatory 4th round draft choice in next month's NFL Draft, the league announced Monday at the owners' meetings in Palm Beach, Fla.

Green Bay's extra selection will be the 37th pick in the 4th round, the 135th pick overall. It gives the Packers a total of eight picks in the upcoming draft -- one in every round except the sixth, a pick surrendered last year in the trade for running back Ryan Grant -- plus an extra pick in the second and fourth rounds. The extra second-round selection came via the trade of defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Cleveland Browns. Six of the Packers' eight picks are in the first four rounds.

In all, 15 teams received a total of 32 compensatory picks, which are awarded based on a team's free-agent losses and signees the previous year.

In 2007, the Packers lost two free agents (running back Ahman Green and tight end David Martin) while signing only one (cornerback Frank Walker).

Packers To Open 2008 Season vs. Vikings On Monday Night Football At Lambeau Field

The NFL announced on Monday that the Green Bay Packers will begin the 2008 season against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field in the first game of the opening weekend's Monday Night Football doubleheader.

Kickoff time is slated for 6 p.m. (CT) on Monday, Sept. 8.

The second game of the opening Monday night doubleheader will pit Denver at Oakland, with kickoff at 9:15 p.m. (CT). Other opening weekend prime-time contests will feature the New York Giants hosting the Washington Redskins on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. (CT) and the Indianapolis Colts opening their new stadium against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 7:15 p.m. (CT). (The complete NFL schedule will be announced at a later time.)

This will mark the fourth time that the Packers will open their season on a Monday night, and the team is 3-0 in its previous Monday openers. The first one was 35 years ago, as Green Bay posted a 23-7 victory over the New York Jets on Sept. 17, 19..

Gullickson Receives League-Wide Award

Over the past two years, players and coaches alike understand the impact Packers strength and conditioning coach Rock Gullickson has had on the team.

Beginning with the transition from machines to free weights in the weight room in 2006 and continuing with the implementation of a productive offseason strength and conditioning program, Gullickson's value as a member of Mike McCarthy's coaching staff is noticed at 1265 Lombardi Ave.

It's been noticed league-wide now as well.

The Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society has named Gullickson its 'Coach of the Year' in a vote of his peers, an honor Gullickson appreciates but one he's not willing to take full credit for.

"It's a reflection of the team's success," said Gullickson, who received the award at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis late last month.

"We haven't had many injuries to starters the last two years, but that isn't just this room. It's the planning t..

Competition Committee To Propose Rules Changes At NFL Owners' Meeting

Beginning Monday, Commissioner Roger Goodell and the owners and presidents from each of the 32 NFL teams will convene in Palm Beach for the annual NFL Owners' Meeting, a three-day conference broaching the status of the game and how potentially to enhance it.

As part of the annual review of the state of the league, the competition committee, headed by Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay and Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, met over four days in February at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and again for a week in Naples, Fla., earlier this month.

"We conducted our annual survey, which we sent to all the teams and really got good input, and that kind of frames the outline for our report," McKay said. "We also met with the players, got their concerns, proposed some things to them to get their feedback and that kind of forms the basis of our report."

McKay, in a conference call on Wednesday, explained a few of the changes the committee plans t..

Catching Up With ... Mason Crosby

The offseason strength and conditioning program began for many of the team's younger players on Monday, March 17, giving Packers.com a chance to catch up with a few guys to get their thoughts on the past season, next season, and what they've been up to in between.

Kicker Mason Crosby enjoyed a dynamite rookie season, leading the league in scoring with 141 points, becoming the first rookie to capture the scoring title since 1985. He made 31-of-39 field goals and all 48 extra points. He also set a franchise record for points in a season by a kicker, surpassing Ryan Longwell's 131 points in 2000, earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors in November along the way.

Here's what Crosby had to say ...

How does it feel to be back?
It's good. It's kind of different, just thinking we're going to be lifting and working out. It's a new feel, with a bunch of the young guys here working out the first two weeks. It's good though. I was getting r..

'Favorite Fives' of 2007: Play of The Year

Over the last several weeks, Packers.com has compiled a series of "Favorite Fives," lists of Top 5 plays from the 2007 season, and from each list, fans have voted for their favorites.

The top vote-getters are here in our final "Favorite Five," the Play of the Year. Video clips and short descriptions of the plays are included, and voting for Play of the Year can be done in the poll on the left side of the page.

Let us know your choice for Play of the Year. The nominees are:

Ryan Grant, 43 yards, vs. Seattle, NFC Divisional playoff (Jan. 12)
An unexpected heavy snowstorm had blanketed Lambeau Field and made visibility difficult when Grant rumbled around left end on the second-to-last play of the third quarter. The run took the Packers to the Seattle 15-yard line, and Grant went over 200 yards on the day and scored his Green Bay postseason record third touchdown a few plays later, the final points in the 42-20 triumph.
Thompson Named 'George Young NFL Executive Of The Year'

Having overseen a turnaround from a 4-12 record in 2005 to a 13-3 mark in 2007 and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, Packers General Manager Ted Thompson on Tuesday was named 'George Young NFL Executive of the Year' by The Sporting News.

"I'm honored to receive this award on behalf of the Green Bay Packers," Thompson said. "We view this as a team honor and feel the coaches, players and staff should all be very proud of the job they've done in helping this franchise succeed. This award is a credit to their dedication and is particularly special because it's named for George Young, who was a tremendous champion for the NFL and a person I greatly admired."

Thompson becomes the second member in the history of the organization to receive the honor, joining former GM Ron Wolf, who was recognized following the 1992 season and who, coincidentally, hired Thompson that year as the former linebacker entered an NFL front office for the first time.

The offseason strength and conditioning program began for many of the team's younger players on Monday, March 17, giving Packers.com a chance to catch up with a few guys to get their thoughts on the past season, next season, and what they've been up to in between.

Defensive end and special teams ace Jason Hunter improved on a productive rookie campaign in 2006 with an even better season in 2007. He led the team with 25 special teams tackles, the most in one season by a Packers player in 22 years. As a backup defensive end, he also had three tackles on defense, and his forced fumble on an Oakland punt return led to the Packers' second special teams touchdown that day.

Here's what Hunter had to say ...

How does it feel to be back?
It feels real good. I got a chance to be at the crib in Charlotte, with the family, but it feels good to be back up here in this environment, going back to work.

More Favre Memorabilia On Display In Canton

More Brett Favre memorabilia has arrived at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

The uniform - including the jersey, helmet, shoulder pads, and socks - worn by Favre when he became the NFL's all-time leader in passing yardage last season is now on display. Favre broke Dan Marino's record for passing yards with a 7-yard completion to Donald Driver early in the fourth quarter of the Packers' 33-14 victory over the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome on Dec. 16, 2007.

Favre retired with 61,655 career passing yards. Marino's previous record was 61,361.

The uniform is on display next to the football Favre threw to Greg Jennings for his 421st career touchdown pass, breaking Marino's mark of 420. That TD pass came 2 1/2 months earlier, on Sept. 30, 2007, at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, in a 23-16 victory over the Vikings. Favre finished his career with 442 touchdown passes.

Also on display is the jersey Favre wore on Nov. 17, 1999, at Lambe..

Barbre Has Mindset To Improve, Compete

The second half of last year's regular-season finale against Detroit provided the Packers coaching staff with its first extended look at rookie guard Allen Barbre in game action.

He made a good early impression, locking up Lions linebacker Paris Lenon to help clear a path for Brandon Jackson's 46-yard run down the far sideline on the first snap of the third quarter.

"He showed when he got a chance to play the reason why he was drafted here," offensive line coach James Campen said. "He's a good athlete and has some explosiveness to him. He had a couple on the backside of run plays where he took defenders down 8, 10 yards on drive blocks. There were good things in there."

Yet when Barbre is asked about that outing against Detroit, he doesn't talk about Jackson's run, nor any of his other solid blocks. Though he didn't feel as overwhelmed as the raw Division II prospect he was in training camp six months earlier, even lined up across from a seasoned pro like D..

Packers To Retire Favre's No. 4 In 2008

A piece of news that's no surprise to Packers fans or anyone around the NFL, Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy confirmed on Wednesday that the team will retire quarterback Brett Favre's jersey number, 4, sometime during the upcoming season.

"I would say it was a no-brainer," Murphy said, speaking to a small group of reporters in the Lambeau Field Atrium late Wednesday. "Obviously what Brett's done for the Packers and for the league as a whole, it was a pretty easy decision to retire his number.

"I really don't have details worked out. Once we get the schedule, we'll take a look at it and figure out the best way to honor him."

The NFL schedule is expected to be released sometime in early April, but Murphy did not put a timetable on when the number retirement ceremony would be announced.

Murphy said he spoke to Favre briefly a short time after the legendary quarterback held his retirement press conference on March 6, and Favre was on bo..

Linebacker A.J. Hawk followed up a strong rookie campaign with another solid season in 2007. He started all 16 games for the second straight year and finished second on the team behind fellow linebacker Nick Barnett with 129 tackles (81 solo), adding one sack, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble, one interception and four passes defensed.

Here's what Hawk had to say ...

How does it feel to be back?
It's good. I never really left, but I was back and forth between here and Ohio for some different things. Obviously it feels like time has gone quick, but I think I'm ready to start the season. This is one step closer, so I'm excited to be back.

Harrell Begins Important Offseason

Defensive tackle Justin Harrell said his position coach, Robert Nunn, was pretty blunt and straightforward about his assessment of the 2007 first-round draft pick's rookie campaign.

"He said I was two different players at times," Harrell said this week, having returned from the winter break to begin the offseason program with other first- and second-year players. "Sometimes I'd go out there and do a great job, all my fundamentals were down. Then at times, my fundamentals were lacking.

"And you could tell the big cut-off between those two players."

That gap is what Harrell is determined to close, if not eliminate, in his second season, and the Packers are counting on it. With the Corey Williams trade last month and Johnny Jolly's recovery from shoulder surgery lasting until at least the start of training camp, there's an open starting position on the interior of the defensive line alongside Ryan Pickett that seemingly has Harrell's name on it.

The offseason strength and conditioning program began for many of the team's younger players on Monday, giving Packers.com a chance to catch up with a few guys to get their thoughts on the past season, next season, and what they've been up to in between.

Defensive back and special teams ace Jarrett Bush emerged as a key contributor in 2007, his second in the NFL after being claimed on waivers by Green Bay as a rookie. Bush held the nickelback role on defense for a good portion of the season, posting 23 tackles (18 solo) and eight passes defensed. He also was involved in a couple of turnover plays on special teams, recording 11 tackles there.

Here's what Bush had to say ...

How does it feel to be back?

When the Green Bay Packers' 2007 season is recorded in the history books, it will be duly noted that the four-game winning streak to conclude 2006 was the springboard to the four-game winning streak that began a memorable 2007.

What won't be so duly noted, but was just as (if not more) valuable, was all the work put in between those winning streaks, work that begins once again Monday with the offseason program.

First- and second-year players begin their offseason workouts on Monday, followed by veteran players two weeks later, on March 31.

The offseason program is a time during which players combine strength and conditioning workouts with one-on-one instructional time with their position coaches, and for one of the youngest teams in the NFL, the strides made a year ago during this time paid significant dividends.

"Players did a great job of coming in individually and spending time with their coaches, and the individual improvement we made throughou..

'Favorite Fives' of 2007: Top Special Teams Plays

In the interest of re-living some of the great moments from a memorable 2007 season, Packers.com has compiled a series of "Favorite Fives," various Top 5 lists of big plays from the regular season and playoffs.

Each list is accompanied by a brief description of the context, plus video clips of the plays. The Packers Fan Poll on the left side of the page allows fans to vote for their favorite.

After all the lists have appeared, votes will be tabulated to compile a final "Favorite Five," and Packers.com visitors can then vote for their favorite play of the year for 2007.

The sixth installment, after a brief hiatus last week, is the Top 5 special teams plays. In chronological order, they are:

Tracy White, fumble recovery for TD, vs. Philadelphia (Sept. 9)
The Packers' first touchdown of the season, and lone touchdown in this opening win, came on the first punt of the season. Eagles punt returner Greg Lewis muffed the ball and was dri..

A Fresh Look At The '08 Opponents

Now that it's official Aaron Rodgers will be taking over for Brett Favre as the Packers' starting quarterback, it's worth taking a quick look at the upcoming 2008 opponents within that context.

Ranked in order of the most intriguing matchups, here's a glance at next season's foes. (Note: The actual game schedule is expected to be released early next month.)

1. Dallas - As if Rodgers hasn't heard enough already about his solid performance in relief of Favre during the NFC's biggest regular-season game in 2007, it will all be rehashed heading into this one. Rodgers rallied the Packers from a 17-point deficit to within three points early in the fourth quarter before Dallas eventually put the game away, but even Rodgers himself doesn't want to put too much stock in that. He said Saturday during his press conference at Lambeau Field he's out to prove he can perform like that (18-of-26, 201 yards, 1 TD, no INT, 104.8 rating) on a consistent basis.
Rodgers Stepping Into 'Good Situation'

As if taking over at quarterback for Brett Favre this upcoming season won't be challenging enough, Aaron Rodgers is also taking over a team that will have sky-high aspirations after falling just short of reaching the Super Bowl last season.

But Rodgers, in his first official press conference as the Packers' starting quarterback on Saturday, doesn't see that as adding to the burden in any way. Quite the opposite, in fact, because with such a strong team, Rodgers won't be asked to carry it like many young, franchise quarterbacks are.

"I'm in a good situation," Rodgers said. "I've got a great team around me. A lot of people are focusing on what I'm going to do. It's what the team is going to do, really. I'm an important part of that, I know my role, and I need to play well.

"I'm stepping into a team that's established already. I'm going to be expected to play well, I expect to play well, but I've got a great supporting cast around me."
Rodgers isn't j..

Some Untold Favre Stories

As former teammates and others close to Brett Favre have reminisced about his career over the past week, several old stories have been told and re-told.

But a few nuggets revealed during Saturday's press conferences in the Lambeau Field auditorium during Fan Fest were new, and perhaps untold to this point.

Here are a few of them:

Former GM Ron Wolf, on the often-told story that Favre failed his physical upon being traded to Green Bay for a first-round draft pick in 1992

"It's been embellished a little bit," Wolf said. "He in fact didn't really fail the physical. That sounds good, but what happened was the doctors tried to say he wouldn't play but maybe three or four years. They wanted to send him back, ... and guess what? He played 16. They were incorrect in their assessment."

The reason was a problem with Favre's hip, the specifics of which Wolf couldn't recall. But because Favre's body wasn't supposed to hold up - horribly ironic ..

Fan Fest Kicks Off New Era

Life will go on after Brett Favre.

At least the 3,500 folks who came to the fourth annual Fan Fest certainly seemed to be embracing that thought, giving rousing ovations to the dozens of current and former players introduced during the kickoff event late Friday afternoon in the Lambeau Field Atrium.

It was no accident one of the loudest ovations was for Favre's successor, Aaron Rodgers, who also received emphatic votes of confidence from both Head Coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson during the kickoff festivities.

"I have zero concerns about Aaron Rodgers. I think his time is now," McCarthy said in a televised interview that was live for the Fan Fest crowd. "He is ready to go, and he will have another offseason to prepare for that."

That offseason program begins in just 10 days, when Rodgers will assume a leadership role around his teammates that he hasn't shied away from in the past. In previous offseasons, it was always temporary..

Favre Emotional Yet Graceful As He Walks Away

No one knew better than Brett Favre how difficult it would be to retire from the game he loves.

It's why he hemmed-and-hawed about it for the last several years, wondering when the time would be right, taking weeks or even months after any given season ended to make up his mind for sure.

And he is sure. But that didn't make Thursday's official retirement press conference in the Lambeau Field Legends Club any easier.

It took less than two dozen words after uttering the phrase "officially retiring" for Favre to be overcome with emotion in an opening statement that lasted roughly 11 minutes and was interrupted repeatedly, but understandably, by what he later called "a knot the size of a basketball" in his throat.

But through that emotion he managed to explain what others with whom he'd spoken had explained on his behalf over the past couple of days, that without feeling 100 percent committed to playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers and all tha..

Clements, Campen Share Thoughts On Favre

Brett Favre's final position coach, quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, may have provided the best explanation yet for how Favre was able to put together one of his best seasons in his 17th, and what turned out to be final, year in the NFL.

"He had a steel-trap mind as far as football is concerned," Clements said Wednesday, speaking to a small group of reporters in the Lambeau Field Atrium. "He could look at something on film during the week and it could happen just like that in the game and he'd have instant recall of that."

Clements saw that mind at work over his two seasons as Favre's position coach, and it was a mind that combined a wealth of experience with a dedication to preparation each and every week.

That combination helped produce one of Favre's best years in 2007, when he completed a career-high 66.5 percent of his throws, surpassed 4,000 yards for the fifth time and posted a 95.7 passer rating that ranks third-best in his career.
Harlan, Wolf Reflect On Historic Trade For Favre

An interesting historical footnote to the Green Bay Packers' acquisition of Brett Favre emerged from the media activities surrounding the quarterback's retirement announcement on Tuesday.

In a press conference in the Lambeau Field auditorium, retired Packers CEO Bob Harlan recalled how back on Dec. 1, 1991, Green Bay was playing in Atlanta and newly hired general manager Ron Wolf was about to take in his first Packers game when he headed down to the field to watch the Falcons' backup quarterback, Favre, during warm-ups.

Wolf already had expressed to Harlan his interest in trading for the former Southern Mississippi star, whom Wolf had rated the top prospect in the 1991 draft. Only Wolf was running the Jets at that time, was without a first-round draft pick, and missed out on Favre by one slot when Atlanta chose him at No. 33, early in the second round and one spot before Wolf was going to pick for the Jets.

Anyway, Harlan began watching Favre, whose last na..

Favre's Decision Surprising, But Understandable

A day of surprise, a day of sadness, but ultimately a day of understanding.

To those running the Green Bay Packers football operations, no one really expected quarterback Brett Favre to retire, not after coming off a near-MVP season in which he led the team to a 13-3 record and within an eyelash of a Super Bowl appearance less than two months ago.

And it's still hard to fathom that Favre, who informed Head Coach Mike McCarthy on Monday night and General Manager Ted Thompson on Tuesday of his retirement plans, won't be quarterbacking Green Bay this fall for the first time since September of 1992.

But both Thompson and McCarthy expressed on Tuesday that they understood the future Hall of Famer's decision, considering the tremendous extent to which he cares about his play, his team, and the undying effort required at age 38 to make both as successful as possible.

"He pours everything he has into being a professional football player, everything," Thomp..

Quotes From Around The League On Favre's Retirement
Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Brett Favre and all that he's done for the Packers and the NFL. He has authored one of pro football's great careers.

"He's an exceptional competitor on the field and a great figure for the community off the field, in Wisconsin and Mississippi.

"Prior to coming to the Packers, I admired Brett Favre from afar and enjoyed following his career through the years, like many football fans. Once I arrived, all those thoughts were reinforced. He means so much to everyone that supports the Packers. We've been fortunate to have him as our quarterback.

"The Green Bay Packers are well positioned for the future. We have a great young team that is going to continue to improve. The quality of the football operations is in great shape. Our two key football people, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy, are in place to continue their great work.

"It's a bittersweet time as we celeb..

Many Records To Celebrate

With Brett Favre retiring after 16 seasons as the Green Bay Packers' starting quarterback (17 seasons overall), nearly every significant NFL passing record is in his grasp.

Some are sure to stand for a long time. Others are already within the sights of Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning. But all are worth celebrating, to be sure.

Here's a list of those significant league records:

Most TD passes: 442
Favre surpassed Dan Marino's mark of 420 in Week 4 last season at Minnesota, with a 16-yard TD pass to Greg Jennings.

Most passing yards: 61,655
Favre connected with his old buddy Donald Driver to break Marino's mark of 61,361 yards at St. Louis last season in Week 15.

Most passing attempts: 8,758
Favre also broke this one last year in Week 4 at the Metrodome, and finished exactly 400 passes ahead of Marino (8,358).

Most wins by a starting QB: 160
Favre eclipsed John Elway's pre..

Where Were They Then?: Sept. 1992 Was A Long Time Ago

The last time a quarterback other than Brett Favre started a game for the Green Bay Packers was on Sept. 20, 1992.

That day, Favre was on the sidelines at Lambeau Field unaware that he would soon enter the game for an injured Don Majkowski, rally the team to an improbable victory with a last-second touchdown pass to Kitrick Taylor, and then start the next 275 consecutive games for the Packers, including the playoffs.

But what else was going on in the fall of 1992, at the time Favre began his remarkable run as the Packers' starting quarterback?

The Cold War had come to an end, development of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was in its final stages, and President George Bush (the first one) and Vice President Dan Quayle were running for re-election, a race they would ultimately lose to Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

Also that year, tennis players Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, who would eventually marry, both won Wimbledon; the Toronto Blue ..

A Year-By-Year Look At Favre's Best Games

To come up with a list of quarterback Brett Favre's greatest games is a daunting task. For a player who started the last 275 Green Bay Packers games, regular season and playoffs, if only one out of every 10 games were great, that would still produce more than two dozen games to discuss.

And Favre certainly has played well more often than one out of every 10 times, so there's no way a reasonable list will hit all his highlights.

But we'll try it this way. Beginning with Favre's first season as a Packer in 1992, here is one of the most memorable performances of each of his 16 seasons as Green Bay's starting signal caller:

1992: Sept. 20, vs. Cincinnati
Favre's first meaningful appearance as a Packer came as a fill-in for Don Majkowski, who injured his ankle in the opening period. Down 20-10 midway through the fourth quarter, Favre leads the Packers back with an 88-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard TD pass to Sterling Sharpe. After a Bengals field goal..
