Mike Stock
Special Teams Coordinator
A veteran coach of 17 NFL seasons, Mike Stock begins his third year as Green Bay's special teams coordinator, his 44th year in coaching overall.
Named to his position Jan. 19, 2006, by Head Coach Mike McCarthy, Stock is one of the most experienced coaches in the NFL. He joined the Packers from the St. Louis Rams, where he spent one season (2004) as special teams coach.
In 2007, Stock was instrumental in the Packers' rise from last to seventh overall in the Dallas Morning News' annual special teams rankings. Tutoring a slew of young players who were just learning the pro game and their special teams roles, Stock coordinated units that finished fourth in punt return average, second in punt coverage and fourth in kickoff coverage in the NFC.
The special teams units also scored four touchdowns last season, while rookie kicker Mason Crosby quickly made a name for himself by leading the NFL in scoring with 141 points. Crosby, who was a solid 31-of-39 (79.5 percent) on field goals in his first season, set a team record for points in a season by a kicker and became the first rookie kicker to lead the league in points since 1985.
In his first year with Green Bay in 2006, Stock assisted in the development of punter Jon Ryan, a former Canadian Football League player who ranked seventh in the NFC in gross punting average (44.5 yards). Stock then helped Ryan change from a three-step to a two-step approach in 2007, and the results were evident, as Ryan maintained his gross average (44.4) and improved his net average by nearly two full yards (35.7 to 37.6), good for sixth and seventh in the NFC, respectively.
Prior to his stint with the Rams, Stock spent three seasons (2001-03) with the Washington Redskins, where he coached special teams. Under Stock, Washington in 2003 ranked fifth in the NFC in kickoff return average (22.5) and also fifth in the conference in kickoff coverage (20.6). Stock helped sculpt KR Chad Morton, who ranked sixth in the NFC with 44 returns for 1,029 yards (23.4 avg.) with a long of 94 yards and one touchdown.
Earlier, Marty Schottenheimer brought Stock to Kansas City to coach special teams (1995-2000), a role in which he first worked with McCarthy, then the Chiefs' quarterbacks coach. After the 1997 season, with Tamarick Vanover one of the premier return men in the league, the Chiefs finished second overall in the Dallas Morning News rankings and Stock earned Special Teams Coach of the Year honors in a vote of his peers.
Stock began his NFL coaching tenure with five seasons (1987-91) in Cincinnati, first as special teams coach (1987-89) and later as wide receivers (1990) and tight ends coach (1991). He helped the Bengals earn a berth in Super Bowl XXIII after the '88 season and worked with K Jim Breech, the Bengals' all-time scoring leader.
Stock's resume includes 26 years of coaching experience at the college level. A fullback at Northwestern under legendary coach Ara Parseghian, Stock entered the profession with his alma mater as a freshman coach in 1961. From there, Stock coached the freshman team at the University at Buffalo (1966-67) and wide receivers/running backs at Navy (1968).
He was a freshman coach (1969) and tutored wide receivers (1970-74) in his first stint at Notre Dame. Stock's Fighting Irish receivers caught passes from then-quarterback Tom Clements, who now coaches the Packers' quarterbacks. In addition, Stock's unit contributed to an unblemished national championship season in 1973 and helped Notre Dame to a 1971 Cotton Bowl victory that ended Texas' 30-game win streak.
Stock's first coaching position in the state was for three seasons at the University of Wisconsin as running backs coach (1975) and offensive coordinator (1976-77).
From 1978-82, he served as head coach at Eastern Michigan before returning to Notre Dame under Gerry Faust as wide receivers coach (1983-85) and running backs coach (1986). He closed his distinguished college coaching career at Ohio State, where he tutored wide receivers from 1992-94. Three of Stock's pupils - Joey Galloway, Terry Glenn and Chris Sanders - went on to excel in the NFL.
Prior to his second stint at Notre Dame, Stock coached the offensive backfield of the New Jersey Generals (1983), a franchise that featured the USFL's leading rusher, rookie Herschel Walker.
As a fullback at Northwestern, Stock led the Wildcats in rushing from 1959-60. After returning from the U.S. Army in 1965, Stock spent one year as an assistant at Akron (Ohio) South High School, then restarted his college coaching career in 1966.
A native of Barberton, Ohio, he and his wife, Peggy, have three grown children, sons Michael and Patrick, and a daughter, Cynthia, as well as five grandchildren. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, reading and playing golf.
