DT RYAN PICKETT #79
6' 2" 330 lbs. Ohio State

Exp: 8th NFL Season, 3rd Packers Season
Age: 28
Acquired: Free Agent 2006 (StL)
Current Status: Active Roster
2007 Bio:
  • Reached 500 career tackles in 2006, having averaged just under six tackles per game since his rookie season
  • Came to Green Bay off a career year in 2005, when he led all NFL defensive linemen with 115 tackles, 10 more than current linemate and runner-up Aaron Kampman
  • His big season in 2005 may have had its roots late in 2004, with several productive games down the stretch and in the postseason, including 13 tackles in NFC Divisional playoff at Atlanta (Jan. 15, 2005), one more than his regular-season career high
  • A first-round draft choice (29th overall) in 2001 who turned pro after his junior year at Ohio State, he hasn't missed a game since midway through his rookie year, playing in 87 straight (93 including playoffs)
  • Became a starter in his second NFL season and has started 13-or-more games the last five years, including every game the past three years
  • An All-American at Zephyrhills (Fla.) High School who did not stay close to home like older brother Booker, who played at Miami (Fla.)
Pro Summary
  • Begins his seventh NFL season and second in Green Bay after proving to be a key addition to the defense in 2006 as one of three unrestricted free agents who joined the Packers
  • A productive interior defender who made the Packers' run defense work and became a quiet leader amongst a deep defensive tackle group
  • Turned in a stellar first season in Green Bay, playing at what the coaches considered a Pro Bowl level, even if his statistics didn't match up to those who did earn the honor
  • Recorded 92 tackles (45 solo) and a career-high seven passes defensed, along with his first career fumble recovery in 2006
  • Simply dominated and proved unblockable some games in the middle, whether it was by making tackles or taking up two blockers to allow linebackers to knife through and make plays
  • Did not record a sack for the first time in his six-year career, but an unheralded and underrated performer who had five-or-more tackles in 12 of 16 games last season, including a career-high-tying 12 on a Monday night in Seattle
  • Took on a huge workload for a player his size, playing more than 600 snaps and not requiring the rest others with his frame and position need to remain productive
  • A large but gentle man who really likes Green Bay and seems to have found more fire for his game playing here
  • Took over Grady Jackson's old starting job after signing as an unrestricted free agent on March 17, 2006, coming over from St. Louis, where he spent his first five seasons and was a first-round draft choice (29th overall) in 2001, turning pro after his junior year at Ohio State.

Came to Green Bay off his best NFL season statistically in 2005 in which he led all of the league's defensive linemen with 115 tackles, 10 more than runner-up Aaron Kampman
  • In six total seasons, has been a starter the last five
  • Reached 500 career tackles in '06, remaining a consistent performer who has averaged 5.9 stops per game since his rookie season
  • Has amassed 500 tackles (240 solo), six sacks, 23 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery
  • Known for occupying space in the middle but with quickness off the ball to make plays, became a player opposing teams had to studiously prepare for during the week
  • Forces teams to block him in pass-rushing situations despite modest career sack total
  • Has proven his durability by playing in 87 consecutive games, 93 including postseason, and has started 60 straight contests (16 with Green Bay and his last 44 with St. Louis)
  • Has the experience of playing in six postseason contests, including Super Bowl XXXVI
2006 SeasonBack To Top
  • A key unrestricted free agent signed from St. Louis, started all 16 games in his first year with the Packers, running his starting streak to 60 games and his consecutive games streak to 87 (93 including playoffs)
  • Often called by coaches the most consistent defensive lineman
  • Didn't routinely show up in the highlight reel, but was very instrumental in stopping the run and creating sack opportunities for his teammates, getting his name mentioned more in the opponents' meeting rooms than in the newspaper
  • Collected 92 tackles (45 solo), one fumble recovery and a career-best seven passes defensed in 642 defensive snaps
  • Was held to fewer than five tackles just four times all season and had six-or-more on eight occasions

  • Led St. Louis in tackles in back-to-back games, with 11 vs. New Orleans (Oct. 23) and nine vs. Jacksonville (Oct. 30)
  • In Jaguars contest, shared a sack with Chris Claiborne in a 24-21 triumph, dropping Byron Leftwich in the third quarter as the Rams protected a second-half lead
  • Got a sack of his own at Houston (Nov. 27), when he floored David Carr on a key third down and forced the Texans to settle for a field goal in the Rams' eventual 33-27 win
