Bever, in his 19th season as head coach of the Division 7 program, led the Rockets to a 23-20 come-from-behind victory over Division 5 Necedah (Wis.) High School last Friday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
"After losing four games in a row, we made it our focus to concentrate on bringing more emotion to the game," Bever said. "In my 20-some years of coaching, this may have been the biggest upset that I've ever been involved with."
New Lisbon has an enrollment of 201 students, and Bever and his staff oversee a program of 21 players. He is assisted by Preston Hemerly, Tom Hoile, Kurt Salverson, Travis Simmons, and Jarod Ulrich.
Bever is a 1983 graduate of New Lisbon, where he played football under the direction of head coach Bud Olson. After graduating from Winona State (Minn.) University in 1988, he was hired as an assistant coach at New Lisbon, before ultimately being promoted to his current position in 1992. Bever is also a physical education teacher at New Lisbon.
