Inbox: His growth deserves to be talked about more

We’re here. We listen. We respond. The rest is up to you.

"My understanding is the Packers are officially calling this 'Winter Warning,' as in "Winter is Coming?" A subtle and intentional allusion to House Stark from "A Song of Ice and Fire," or just a turn of phrase that popped into your head?

I can't speak to Spoff's intentions when he wrote that, but I'll pop for any "A Song of Ice and Fire" reference.

James from Appleton, WI

I know Jeff Hafley likes to get the job done with just his front four, but I can't think of a better way to start Sunday's game than putting Evan Williams right in C.J. Stroud's lap. With Halloween coming, the Packers should fill Stroud's head with shadows and ghosts.

Not to give away my key to victory for Sunday's game but maintaining a steady rush on Stroud and making his life difficult in the pocket is, well, my key to victory. The Packers had two quarterback hits and no sacks last week, but I still felt it was the defensive front's best all-around game of the year. The pressure was there, and Murray never got into a rhythm. Stroud has been sacked 16 times, tied for sixth-most in the league. Whether it's Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, Williams or even Daniel Whelan, the Packers need to turn up the heat on Stroud and not let him get comfortable.

TK from Grafton, WI

The defense is going bananas with turnovers. Love it! One explanation is that they are playing with better "vision to the QB." However, sometimes a TV announcer will explain a defender got burned because he was caught "peeking into the backfield." Like, what gives, man?

Keeping vision, or eyes, on the quarterback is different than peeking into the backfield, which can lead to biting on play-action and falling behind the play. By keeping eyes on the QB, it enables the defense to stay locked on the ball.

Nick from Plainwell, MI

Good morning, Insiders! Is Stroud the prototypical pocket passer of which everybody thinks of? I can envision our edge rushers chopping at the bit to pin their ears back, especially if we can get a bit of an early lead and force them to throw the ball.

C.J. Stroud can run (4.48 40), but he's always looking to throw. Defenders still have to be mindful of how they rush him. Like Jordan Love, Stroud can deal from the pocket, buy time with his feet and call his own number when the throw isn't there.

Ryan from Sun Prairie, WI

Is this the week Josh Jacobs catches a touchdown pass?

Yes. Seventy-nine NFL games and 208 career catches. It. Is. Time. It is time.

Brian from Weston, WI

To the question on Friday regarding the need for the Packers to win the rest of their division games, with some help and a few other wins to win the division. If they did that, they would likely be the No. 1 seed let alone win the division. This division is too good, and the teams are going to beat up on each other, winning all of them is an incredible long shot. Not to bring any math into this but effectively like flipping heads five times in a row. One game at a time and see where the cards fall.

The division is tight and likely to stay that way for the rest of the season. But again, the Packers can't worry about the NFC North until it takes care of the AFC South.

Al from Green Bay, WI

Tough challenge as the Texans come to town. They're good, but GB can prevail. Reasons to believe: 1) Jordan Love. He's thrown four TDs in each of the last two home games. His injury appears to be behind him, and he's ballin'. 2) The D continues to jell with each passing game. Allowing 13 points while taking the ball away three times last week is the evidence. 3) Lambeau Field. Always an advantage. 4) GB simply has more weapons than the Texans. 5) Brandon McManus gives us new confidence in the FG game.

The Packers also are the healthier team. Houston is getting back Denico Autry from suspension but is hurting at linebacker and in the secondary with Azeez Al-Shaair, Henry To'oTo'o, Kamari Lassiter and Jimmie Ward all ruled out. The Texans still present a lot of problems on defense, but they're a hurting unit.

Kevin from Jenison, MI

I'm so impressed with the development of Keisean Nixon. Basically, an end-of-the-roster guy with the Raiders, he has become an All-Pro kick returner, slot corner, punt returner and now boundary corner ahead of Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine. Amazing.

Nixon signed with the Raiders as an undrafted rookie in 2019 and has never been cut during his NFL career. That's pretty impressive. You don't wade through those waters without seizing every opportunity thrown your way. It took four years, but Nixon finally started getting consistent playing time on defense last year and he's only gotten better. Nixon plays physical and has the speed to hang with the best on the perimeter. At some point, I want to write something more on Nixon – maybe next week – but for now an Insider Inbox headline will have to do. Because his growth deserves to be talked about more.

The Green Bay Packers held practice on Friday, Oct. 18, ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans.

Does the infusion of youth and playstyle on defense give Jeff Hafley more confidence to expand his aggressive defensive philosophical position? I can't recall another group of draftees seemingly NFL ready as contributors. Can you identify a similar group standing out so early?

There's been several rookies who have come in and made an immediate impact during my time on the beat, but I don't know if it's been in unison like Evan Williams, Javon Bullard and Edgerrin Cooper. As these rookies get more experience, it's only going to increase Hafley's confidence in how he calls his defense. Week after week, that group is getting better.

William from Charleston, WV

How are the Packers planning to address the inconsistency in their offensive line play, especially with upcoming key divisional matchups?

"Inconsistent" is an ambiguous word. Watching some O-line play across the NFL such as New England and the New York Jets, I'd call that inconsistent. But like Spoff wrote Friday, the Packers' offensive line is coming off its best game of the year against Arizona. Of course, there's still plenty of room for improvement. Jordan Morgan is back in the rotation and hopefully that only makes the O-line stronger moving forward.

Ray from Phoenix, AZ

Is Josh Myers the only C/G on the roster right now? I am thinking this might be a position of need in the draft next year.

I always found it interesting the Packers never shifted Myers to just "center." He can play guard, but I couldn't tell you the last time I saw him play there with my own four eyes. Myers is in the final year of his rookie contract, but that's a conversation for down the road. As it relates to this year, Zach Tom, Sean Rhyan, Jacob Monk and Elgton Jenkins can all bump to center when needed. Shoot, Jenkins did it last week.

Joe from Harrisburg, SD

Good day, I see that the fans are encouraged to wear white Sunday on "Winter Warning" gameday. If the fans do that in large numbers, could it make it harder for Jordan Love to pinpoint the location of his receivers clashing with the white uniforms and the white clothing of the fans?

Hopefully Love isn't throwing the ball in the stands. Houston is also wearing all navy uniforms so that should help with the on-field optics. I don't expect any confusion.

Jack from Chicago, IL

On "Packers Unscripted," you discussed this year vs. last and the kicking situation. I think Anders Carlson's early success played a factor, like Wes said, as well as the investment in him. I disagree, though, with Mike on expectations. I do think the team intends to compete every year. It's possible there just wasn't a veteran option last year with this unusual circumstance with Brandon McManus being available. Some can point to the Douglas trade as a proxy for expectations, but it looks like we may have just been selling high.

Not many veteran kickers have made it to market the past two years and the one who did (Matt Gay) became the highest-paid kicker in NFL history. Jake Moody was the one kicker with which I was enamored in the 2023 draft and San Francisco drafted him in the third round. With respect to everything Moody has accomplished, I'd rather have Tucker Kraft. I still think the Packers approached it the right way this offseason – sign a veteran to compete with your returning draft pick. Unfortunately, neither claimed the job and here we stand. It's McManus' turn to try stopping this carousel.

Ryan from Carmel, IN

Spoff has neither the time nor the inclination to explain his writing to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very journalistic integrity that he provides and then questions the manner in which he provides it. He would rather that you just said, "Thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, he'd suggest you pick up a keyboard and post a story. Either way, he doesn't give a LUNCH what you think you're entitled to!

Don't think that didn't cross my mind.

Shannon from Ovilla, TX

I back Mike on his takedown of Larry from Knoxville. I don't read II for news, I read II for the feelings of fellow fans and insight from Mike and Wes. There are a bazillion other locations for news or rumors. I appreciate the daily effort the two of you put into this segment of the website. I understand it's something that doesn't need to be done and isn't done for all teams. GPG

Nobody is safe when Mike knuckles up. My only addition is what I've said before: Show me another NFL media outlet taking reader questions every day of the work week. We're here. We listen. We respond. The rest is up to you.

Nathan from Abingdon, MD

Love Mike's response to Larry from Knoxville regarding breaking news. I'd also remind him that packers.com was the FIRST to officially break the news regarding cutdown day. Beat other, clickbait sites by hours. We don't come here for the breaking news. We come here for the football team and stories and stay for Insider Inbox community we've found.

No respect shown for Friday injury report, either.

Jeff from Indian Lake, NY

Why are people always so angry with Spoff and Hod? You work for the Packers, which comes with limitations. But you guys are my favorite and I choose to get my news here. Choose is the key word. Don't understand why these angry people still check the website/app or submit questions to this column. Go buy some purple and be a fake fan over there. Enjoy the GAME everyone!

My middle name is punching bag.

James from Chicago, IL

Funny how fans complain you're not providing them with breaking news and clickbait, but at the time would complain if you provided information that turned out not to be true. In this age of clickbait and "reporting" based on the writer's opinion, I find it refreshing that I can ignore stories that are based on "source close to the situation." If I see a headline, I open my Packers app, then say to myself, "Mike and Wes haven't reported it. That means it didn't happen."

Like Christian Watson reportedly going on injured reserve for his ankle injury against Minnesota? Listen, respect to all those national and local reporters working the beat. It's a tough gig. I worked in the breaking-news business long enough to know I'd rather just see the cards dealt on the felt without predicting what's coming on the turn.

John from Stevens Point, WI

White out on Sunday? Will the NFL go back to a white football for the game, like those used for a 1950s night game?

I don't think I knew that.

Lori from Heredia, Costa Rica

Hey Weston, tip of the helmet to the genius who created the augmented reality experience on the Packers app. Was that someone in the Packers media department or in the league office? Super easy and fun, I'm getting my profile pic ready for gameday wearing the new white helmet.

That is our supremely talented digital and creative department leading that project. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Dan from Algonquin, IL

Hi Wes, do you and/or Mike watch college football on Saturdays, or do you use the time to do other things? The Texas/Georgia game on Saturday night should be a doozy.

I get my fill of college football in late winter and early spring. Saturdays in the fall, particularly during Packers home weekends, are the only time I can get away from football. I gladly exercise the option to get away, if only for a day.

Bob from Rome, NY

Wes, I found my white leisure suit, white shoes, and white belt if you need it for Sunday. All you need is a white shirt with an extra wide collar. Let me know if you want me to overnight it to you. Thank you!

Tempting, but I'll be rocking my grey suit with a white shirt for Tyler Gajewski.

Mike from Baraboo, WI

Two young QBs in a great match up at Lambeau? It doesn't get much better than this, does it?

It sure doesn't. Personally, I've had this one circled on my calendar for a while. Enjoy the game everyone.
