Markus from Aurora, CO
Insiders, should I pay more attention to everything that is going on in the offseason or just lean back and trust the front office to make the moves that need to be made? I'm obviously not as "obsessed" as others and take more of a passive approach.
Do whatever your heart desires, Markus. My only request is fans don't come back eight months from now and act like they knew the ending to the story all along. Nobody does.

Referring to Larry McCarren's 40 time, I saw a video of a reverse to James Lofton a few days ago. And who was way downfield blocking? No. 54.
You can't measure heart…and Larry McCarren had one of the biggest as a two-time Pro Bowl center.

Other than short-term is there any value to picking up a player like Khalil Mack? Does bringing a veteran presence add value or inspiration to the DL? Thank you.
You never know until they're on the roster, but Julius Peppers brought a lot to the defense when he signed with the Packers as a 34-year-old free agent in 2014. I've had my eye on Mack this offseason, but it remains to be seen whether Green Bay does.
Chip from Beverly Hills, MI
What did Lukas Van Ness NOT improve on this season? I read a couple times "He needs to do more than bullrush. He needs to develop moves." Isn't that what coaches are supposed to do?
I couldn't tell who's writing that, Chip. It could be someone credible or Billy in his mom's basement. What's quantifiable is Van Ness is a young player with huge upside and a new position coach. Take a breath and let's see what happens.

Guys, you have to take what the draft has to offer in terms of first-rounders. The 2025 draft is DL-heavy, and therefore I ask you, shouldn't we take a defensive lineman in Round 1? Best player available will be an OL or DL, no doubt.
Sure, if that's how the board looks when the Packers are picking at No. 23. Once the pre-draft dust settles, the Packers will set their board and draft accordingly. As we've heard before, the tie typically goes to the need when two players have a similar grade.
Joe from Liberty Township, OH
I know many fans are happy the salary cap increased so much because the Packers now have more to spend, but I see it differently. Part (most?) of that increase will just go to higher free-agent salaries, but even more detrimental is that now several teams went from having no money to go after free agents to now competing for free agents the Packers may target.
Resources and allocation. A team already in a financial bind likely will put itself in another soon. Fortunately, the Packers keep their books as well as any team in the NFL. They'll be fine.

Hawk-Eye Virtual Measurement System to replace first-down chains. Next up: laser goalposts.
One can only hope, but this is what I was talking about earlier this month. It's 2025. We have the technology. It's well past time the NFL starts to utilize it. It's good to hear it plans to in this regard.
Craig from Sussex, WI
The Packers built indoor practice fields, which partially helped free agents choose Green Bay as a destination, yet it sounds like most practices take place outdoors. Interesting.
The Packers made a sizeable investment into replacing the turf inside the Hutson Center last offseason and it benefited the team, but still nothing beats actual grass. That's why most team (11-on-11) practice periods often take place outside.
Rick from Trempealeau, WI
While a bounce of the proverbial ball one way instead of the other can put you in either the win or the loss column, the Packers were a few fingertips away from going 0-6 in the division (CHI). Do you think that affects the way you build your team or changes the need to win more in your division? Win the division and then worry about the rest? Or just be so good everyone will be scheming to beat you?
I'll see your hypothetical fingertip question and raise you the Packers beating Detroit a few weeks later? Now what? How would that change the season? To your question, my answer is the same from Wednesday – teams gotta focus on themselves. Doing what's in the best interest of your team only makes you more formidable against your division. It's all applicable. It's not like the Packers only need to pressure with four when they're playing the North, right? You obviously want to win your division games but there's another 11 on the regular-season schedule, too.

If there were ever a draft class where Green Bay should shy away from their typical measurable thresholds, it's this one. There is so, so much production and explosiveness from guys in this class that are well under the prototypical height and weight Gute looks for. Do I think they should go and use two of their three top 100 picks on "smaller guys"? No. However, do you see this draft involving an unexpected/abnormal pick in the top 100 for the Pack? I can see Round 2 being a shocker pick!
It depends on the guy and his intangibles. Jayden Reed wasn't the biggest or fastest receiver in the 2023 draft class, but his overall makeup and strong catch radius made him a legitimate second-rounder. It's up to Gutekunst and his scouts to make those determinations.

Guys, the NFLPA came out with their team rankings, Packers seventh overall. Is there any importance to this? Do players look at it, do teams look at it?
You'd have to ask the players. The players' association puts these out at the end of February, so I certainly can't ask them. I respect what the PA is doing. Accountability is important, especially for the egregious, but I think sometimes this gets blown out of proportion, too. What's important is this organization treats players right, which reflects in the grades.
Tom from Nolanville, TX
Spoff, I say bring back the "FumbleRooski " and "The Pig in the Poke" if the Tush Push is going to be allowed. Might as well turn the NFL into rugby.
I couldn't care less about the tush push. Seriously. I was fine with it until I watched in the NFC Championship game. That was the turning point for me.
Josh from Playa Majagual, Nicaragua
Hey guys, maybe we are looking at this the wrong way. While I'm all for eliminating assisting a runner, maybe we should consider leveling the playing field on the other side of the ball. What if we instead began allowing defenders to drive runners backwards for a loss of yards? I'd love to see Brian Gutekunst and his gang scouting caber tossing leagues for the next All-Pro running back chucker.
Just another excuse for refs to call unnecessary roughness on the defense…but I agree with Greg and Michael and if "assisting the runner" doesn't whet your palette, maybe we need to create an illegal formation rule for how the offensive line sets. If it's not a field goal formation, prohibit O-linemen from bunching together as tightly as humanly possible like Philly does.
Roxanne from Helena, MT
To play devil's advocate, doesn't it feel a bit weak banning the "Tush Push"? I would be for banning it if every team was using it and almost always getting a few yards. However, since it has been used most effectively by the champs, banning it now comes off as other teams being sore losers who just don't want to put in the effort to either stop it or implement it themselves.
I hate hearing the term "weak" in regards to this play. Football is not weak. Nobody is backing down from it. It's a question about whether the play is safe and true to the sport. Again, the Eagles lost me on this the moment Jalen Hurts used a hard count after the officials told Washington it would award points if the Commanders jumped offside again. The whole sequence was an embarrassment for the NFL.

I've always thought smaller cornerbacks are frequently hurt when they have to tackle powerful RB, TE or bigger WRs (e.g. Jaire Alexander, etc.). Shouldn't GB be looking for bigger cornerbacks who obviously are fluid and quick (e.g. Jaylon Johnson, Patrick Surtain, Sauce Gardner)? I realize they're the best of the best, but shouldn't GB be assigning 6-foot, 195-plus-pound minimums as the goal?
Staying on the field is more than just size. Kevin King went 6-foot-3, 200 pounds and still battled his share of injuries. Teams take hard looks at a player's injury history when drafting them, but you also can't predict the future. Maybe a more competent football mind would say there is a need to increase the baseline for corners, but I don't draw any conclusions from Alexander's recent injury issues.

Hi Wes, ever since Sterling Sharpe was inducted into the Hall of Fame the memories of Favre's heave to him in the back of end zone against the Lions have been playing over and over again in my mind and I'm reminded of the joy I felt as a kid watching that iconic play. Is there a play that stands out to you since you've been covering the Packers that has given you a similar feeling to the one I experienced as a kid?
I'm not sure if it's comparable, but Aaron Rodgers' 60-yard pass to Jordy Nelson against Chicago in 2016 is forever burned into my brain. In the midst of "Run the table," the Packers relinquished a 17-point lead over the Bears, who tied the game at 27 before the deep ball to Nelson on third-and-11. Rodgers ran up, spiked it, and Mason Crosby came out for the game-winning field goal. It didn't produce a world championship, but that was such a magical run.
Daniel from Allerød, Denmark
If you could change any rule in football (not replay-related, though. I know your answer to that), what would it be?
Illegal hands to the face on the ball-carrier…Are you beginning to get a sense for how much it irks me how the game has become so tilted towards the offense?
Eric from Springfield, VA
There are only so many teams in this league and players/coaches can bounce around a lot. Which coach and/or player has been with the most teams?
Quarterback Josh Johnson has played for the most NFL teams (14). I'm not sure about who's coached with the most different teams, though.
Mike from Baraboo, WI
The NFL Draft is rapidly approaching. When will we hear more details about how everything is going to roll out?
Michael got the ball rolling last week. I'm sure more will be announced in the weeks and months ahead.
Bob from Rome, NY
Gentlemen, not sure what the solution to the onside kick rule is but one minor change I would like to see is make it an option any time in the second half. I'm pretty confident the Chiefs would have liked to try one with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. I know, don't get down big and you don't have to worry about it but just saying! Your comments are appreciated! Thank you.
I'm fine with that but also feel like the league does enough to bail out the offense already. If you want to win, maybe have a bit more success the first three quarters. It's a pro football game, not an "Avengers" movie building to a climax.
Dar from Mansfield, TX
Weston, if Mike were selected to choose a combine drill in which to compete, it sounds like his former baseball speed would lend itself to the 40. What is the drill you've thought might best suit your own abilities? Or would at least be awfully fun to try?
I highly doubt I'd do well in any test, especially the short-area quickness drills. Presently, I'm feebly working my way up to benching 225 pounds but probably couldn't do more than one on my best day.
JD from Madison, WI
Mike and Wes, at one of Jeff Hafley's pressers late in the season he said that he was willing to sit down with the press and discuss how his defense has progressed in learning his scheme and how that impacts how he can adjust. Have you had that discussion? If so, when might we get your thoughts on your sit down? Anxiously waiting in Mad City.
Nothing new to report on that front, which is understandable. NFL coaches keep a busy schedule. In the rare instances they have time off, they're usually out of the building. It'd be awesome if it came together, though. I'd love to pick Hafley's brain about football for an hour or two.
Brian from Urbana, IL
Hey fellas. My wife and I used to go to Indy every New Year's before we had kids to stay the night and check out a few restaurants. What's your favorite place to eat at Indy these days?
Hyde Park. It's what I miss the most about no longer traveling to the NFL Scouting Combine.

Always appreciate the work you guys do. When will the "Packers Unscripted" podcast return? Will there be pre- and post-draft podcasts?
"Unscripted" will be back for the NFL Draft and portions of the offseason program. Thank you for listening. I'm out for a minute but Spoff will be back to solve the world's problems on Monday.
