A clarification/comment on the light-up goalposts in rugby mentioned in Friday's Inbox. They are triggered by the touch of judges or referee, and are not automatic. That is likely to change quite quickly though.
It better.

I know everyone in the II is going to be talking about Family Night, but I want to compliment Emma Pravecek on her skill set at capturing photos of the Packers practice. I'm so used to seeing Evan's photos, but hers had a different feel. They are really good! Keep up the good work Emma, you definitely have a talent and keen eye for sports photography.
Editor's note: The cover photo on this year’s Packers Yearbook is one of Emma's. Numerous shots inside as well.

On top of the football, I don't know what was better … Wayne, Larry, Cobb and Kuhn reminiscing about the play and call on fourth-and-8 or the pee-wee football kid being mobbed by the team making a memory that will last a lifetime. In both cases, my heart made the grinch heart measurer thing break. Great night!
It truly was.
Jeff from Indian Lake, NY
The pictures of Coach Bisaccia celebrating behind the young man from Waupun are simply amazing.
Lots of Family Nights have run together for me over the years. That one will stand out for a while.
Jessi from Sterling, KS
THANK YOU for live streaming Packers Family Night! Had to watch double with the Olympics, buuuuut when you watch a kid catch three balls and the Packer players huddle around him, you know you caught the best moment! How about Watson, did he sustain an injury?
LaFleur said afterward Christian Watson was fine, but it was a bit scary looking in the moment.

Family Night in Green Bay – which player on offense and defense best helped their position to make the 53, earn a starting spot, or solidify their starting position?
The work of three DBs definitely caught my eye and I mentioned them all in my practice recap – Eric Stokes, Javon Bullard and Kalen King.
Tim from Olathe, KS
Mike, a great defense also tackles well. It's often the difference between a stop on third down and a drive continuing, especially in crunch time. How do we look from a tackling perspective including at S and CB?
No idea. Haven't seen any starters tackle since last January.
Ric from Longmont, CO
Our defense is transitioning from "read and react" to "attack and disrupt". Do you think we will see evidence of this in the preseason games?
Yes, but I'm not sure how meaningful it'll be with mostly the reserve units playing, and even if the starters play some, they won't play much.
Mike from Coleman, WI
I was surprised that a one-time Super Bowl team ('85 Bears) had six HOFers. What's the most Hall of Fame players that started on any of the Packer championship teams?
There were as many as 11 of the 12 Lombardi-era HOFers starting on title-winning teams. The '62 team started Ringo, Kramer, Gregg, Starr, Hornung and Taylor on offense, and Davis, Jordan, Nitschke, Adderley and Wood on defense. The '65 and '66 teams started all those guys except Ringo on offense, but plus Robinson on defense.
John from Livermore, CA
So who's is the next Packer you see going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?
Through the traditional, modern-era process, it'll be Aaron Rodgers. The question is whether Sterling Sharpe (senior route) or Mike Holmgren (coach/contributor category) get in before that.

Continuing the discussion on injury settlements, how is the length of the settlement decided? Is there a formula according to injury, is the medical team involved or is it just negotiations between the team and the player? If the player signs to another team during the settlement period, does the payment stop or is it guaranteed money?
The team's medical staff will project how long the player would be out, and negotiations can ensue from there. To my knowledge, the player can't sign anywhere until the settlement expires. As Wes said, he can only return to the team with which he settled three weeks after the expiration.

Good morning! I remember a few years ago when Randall Cobb introduced us to the rule allowing a kickoff returner to step out of bounds before receiving the ball. I wonder how this ruling might play into the new kickoff rules, regarding landing zone, end zone, and out of bounds. Is anything defined, or is it "wait and see"?
When Clete Blakeman was here last weekend, he told us if a returner straddles the 20-yard line and catches the kickoff there, he's considered out of the landing zone and the ball would be placed on the 40.
Gordon from Newport Beach, CA
Considering the new NFL kickoff rule, is it fair to say that Cordarrelle Patterson's longest kickoff return can never be broken?
Patterson's 109-yarder against the Packers in 2013 can never be broken regardless of the kickoff change, but it could still be tied. Would a kick returner pass up a touchback on the 30 and bring the ball out from the back of the end zone? Not likely, but you never know.

We're coming up on the time of year when tough decisions have to be made about who stays and who goes. And I'm certain that significant relationships are developed over the time that players and coaches are together. When a player has to be let go, do the coaches ever help or put in a good word to coaches on other teams to help the player out or is that strictly up to the player and their agent?
It's mostly up to the player and agent. Some "good word" might've been put in here and there in the past, but with expanded practice squads including so many veteran players (who previously weren't eligible to be brought back), I doubt there's much of it now.

Hello, after last season's evolution of the offense under Jordan Love, how do you see that affect the defensive play calling? Will the defense with the switch at DC and scheme be more aggressive and take even more chances on the back end especially with McKinney/Alexander? (Knowing Jordan will protect the ball and can score when needed if necessary.)
I've never heard of a defensive play-caller approaching his job in that context. Maybe as an individual game is unfolding, situationally, etc. But as an overarching philosophy in professional football? Uh, no. In the immortal words of Herm Edwards, you play to win the game.
Jeff from Los Feliz, CA
It might be a bit early to ask, but, heaven forbid if Josh Jacobs went down with an injury, I'm guessing M. Lloyd is the primary RB and Dillon's role does not change?
Maybe, but I wouldn't assume that.
Kelly from Stoughton, WI
FWIW, small sample size but I thought the new KO looked OK and intriguing in the HOF game. OK, critical time. We have talked a lot about the depth and up-and-coming talent. If you had to pick one position group that, let's say "you need to see more of" before you are willing to say we are OK at, which is it?
I'd like to see one of the backup offensive tackles step forward and seize that swing/third tackle spot. The Packers have plenty of candidates – Andre Dillard, Kadeem Telfort, Caleb Jones, Luke Tenuta – and plenty of time still to sort it out. But if Jordan Morgan winds up starting at guard and is focused on that spot, someone needs to be a reliable next tackle up.
Greg from Perkasie, PA
What is your biggest concern for this team as it stands currently? I think mine is offensive line depth. It seems that there is solid depth at every other position, but the O-line seems like it might have the least.
The interior O-line depth seems strong to me. The questions are on the outside.
Stan from Milton, FL
Jumping ahead a bit but how soon before the game will the Packers put in the game plan for the Eagles?
With the extra time now between the third/final preseason game and the start of the regular season, they have plenty of time to work on that after roster cuts. With the old four-game preseason and quick turnaround from roster cuts to Week 1, early game plans were worked into some practice periods during camp.
Mike from San Diego, CA
We've had a very successful succession plan for our QBs in the last decades, but what is the succession plan for QB whisperer Tom Clements?
Connor Lewis is in his third season assisting Clements with the QBs, and LaFleur this year also hired former NFL QB Sean Mannion, who is just starting his coaching career.
The Green Bay Packers held their 23rd Family Night practice at Lambeau Field on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024.

Regarding the question from Paul from Cottage Grove, WI, about guys stepping up when injuries occur. Mike's response made me think about looking forward to when many of the young starters will be eligible for new contracts/become FAs. While we all know "you can't sign them all" the Packers will have put themselves in a good spot to have other young up-and-coming players to replace those who do move on.
That's the perfect world the personnel department is constantly striving for. Getting high-quality play from lower-priced players helps the big picture immensely.
Bryan from Madison, WI
If Jordan Love plays at a similar level for most of the 2024 season as he did down the stretch last year, do you think some of our key front office personnel will start getting poached for promotions with other clubs? I certainly don't want to jinx anything, but if Love shows that he is not a one (half?)-season wonder, then I imagine every team in the league would want to get an inside look at the process that led from Favre to Rodgers to Love.
I don't think anyone needs an inside look at that process. It's pretty self-evident. I do think some of Gutey's top lieutenants (Jon-Eric Sullivan, John Wojciechowski, Milt Hendrickson) are going to get looks for other GM jobs, but it won't really be because of Love individually. It'll be if all these draft picks from the '22 and '23 classes – Quay Walker, Devonte Wyatt, Watson, Romeo Doubs, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker, Lukas Van Ness, Luke Musgrave, Jayden Reed, Tucker Kraft, Dontayvion Wicks, Karl Brooks, Carrington Valentine – continue to develop into the core of a perennial contender.
Tom from Iron River, WI
Will the kicking competition go down to the last preseason game?
Wouldn't shock me in the slightest.
Clipton from Pasadena, CA
Mike, regarding Wes's use of "perseverate," as editor could you please remind him of Mark Twain's cardinal rule of writing: "Never use a big word when a diminutive one will do"?
Indubitably.

So Spoff types with his toes. Was the release of that information intentional?
Oh boy. Happy Monday.
