Is there a 12-step group for Dunning Kruger effect? Asking for a friend.

I spit out a little Pumpkin Spice latte after reading Mike's retort Thursday. Classic.

Bob from Grand Rapids, MI

Wes, I always know you will write amazing in-depth stories. But as a homegrown Rutgers alumnus, your story on the Melton brothers made my eyes moist with pride. Pride for the Melton family, for my home state of New Jersey, and pride for the wonderful work you do on packers.com. Thanks for a wonderful article, again!

Thank you, but full credit goes to Bo Melton, Max, Gary Jr. and their parents. All five were generous with their time and helped bring the story to life. These features are always fun because you get to know the person beyond just the player. Bo has been in Green Bay for less than two years and he's already one of my all-time favorites. I can see where he gets it from after talking with Gary Sr. and Vicky. Sunday is going to be an extraordinary day for the entire Melton family. With any luck, maybe we see Bo and Max get matched up on offense- defense or special teams. Regardless, the whole family is brimming with pride over Sunday as they should be. A lot of love, dedication and sacrifice went into these two young men making it to this level. I hope they enjoy every second of it.

"I never planned in a million years that we'd have two kids in the NFL." Great story, Hod. It'll be fun to see who earns bragging rights.

It sounds like the Packers' and Cardinals' coaches are all for it, too.

Matt from Woodlands, TX

Wow, Wes really did a deep dive in the Melton story. How long have you been working on that? I get why Spoff did double duty this week, that was quite the enjoyable read!

I told Bo the day after he made the 53-man roster I wanted to write it and he graciously opened up his life, and contacts list, to me for the project.

Kyler Murray likes to run to the outside. Would it make more sense to have Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper line up at the outside backer spots with Isaiah McDuffie in the middle to take advantage of their speed to contain?

There are different ways the Packers can go about it. The question I have is whether this could be a game where Green Bay utilizes Edgerrin Cooper more in nickel to get more speed on the field in case Murray tucks it out of four wide. To me, base defense is base defense.

Albert from Hayward, WI

I am thoroughly impressed with Tucker Kraft. I don't want to sound like I may be limiting his talents. But he absolutely reminds me of Paul Coffman. He runs people over just like Paul did. Don't you think that he could end up having a similar career if he continues on this trajectory?

I loved what Kraft said at his locker Thursday, which I'll be writing more about this morning. He's grateful for the lofty comparisons, but what Kraft wants most is an opportunity to carve out his own path…and he's paving it with controlled violence.

Scott from La Crosse, WI

There has been a lot of criticism for Jordan Love's deep throw into triple coverage, but didn't he do the same thing last year to Jayden Reed and was applauded for it? I was wondering if you remember the play and if it was the same concept/route combination as the one this year? Both were deep crossers to the left, into triple coverage, and Reed made excellent adjustments to catch them.

I think it's just understanding and appreciating he got away with one there. I still give Love a little grace because even if LA picks it off there, the Rams are starting inside their own 10. It's a lot different than the pass Love got away with in Brazil that would've been a pick-six down the sideline. The defender dropped it, and Love connected with Reed two plays later for a TD.

Bob from Marinette, WI

Not a question but a comment. After hearing Coach LaFleur being asked of Jordan Love's throwing the long ball in the middle of a group of defenders. He of course said it wasn't the wisest thing to do. He said I went no, no, no, yes. I remember the exact same thing being said by Mike Holmgren in an interview after a game where Brett Favre had changed up the called for play. He also went no, no, no, yes after it was successful completion. I guess maybe it's just a great quarterback knowing what he can do.

And not being afraid to do it. I said a dozen times last year, Love's playstyle has qualities of both Favre and Rodgers…but probably tilts more towards No. 4. Love is gonna take some chances, for better and for worse. But Jordan Love is never going to be afraid to throw the football. That's what makes him a franchise QB.

Put on your DC cap for a second. Between these two strategies, which would you prefer: Line up your No. 1 CB against their No. 1 WR, or line up your No. 2 CB with constant safety help against their No. 1 WR and put your No. 1 CB against their No. 2 WR?

I've gone back and forth on this for years. Today, I'd say if your No. 1 corner can play on an island against their No. 2, I think you just play sides and allow the safety to help cloud coverage against the top wideout of the other team. As much as people like to talk about a "shutdown" cornerback traveling with a receiver, it's not easy to do in practicality because of how coordinators will mix man and zone.

The Green Bay Packers held practice at Clarke Hinkle Field on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024.

Ray from Phoenix, AZ

Why is Josh Jacobs getting so much flak from so many Packer fans? I think he is off to a great start.

I hope that isn't true and unfortunate if that's the case. Jacobs is one of the higher-graded running backs, according to Pro Football Focus. His durability and consistency were two big reasons why Green Bay signed him, and he's living up to those traits. I'm sure Jacobs wants to find the end zone more, especially in the passing game, but he's on pace for 1,366 rushing yards at the moment. He's giving this offense what it needs.

Steve from Phoenix, AZ

I really like what I'm seeing from this draft class, and we've barely scratched the surface. Jordan Morgan and MarShawn Lloyd will add at least depth when they get healthy. Javon Bullard and Evan Williams have already flashed and gimme some more Edgerrin Cooper. That's a high ceiling.

The Packers are high on Morgan, too. That was reinforced Thursday when Adam Stenavich talked about his desire to get Morgan right back into the O-line rotation once he's finally cleared from the shoulder. In so many cases, rookies just need to play, so they can learn what they don't know.

Mike from Geneva, IL

With the way he wears his hair, how does "X" keep his helmet from flying off and for it to provide safety? It doesn't seem possible!

A strong chinstrap.

Sam from Ronan, MT

There was a lot of buzz around Kalen King after the draft. His sophomore year at Penn State was remarkable, then as a junior it was a lot more medial. I know he is on the practice squad, but what is the overall feeling with him so far? Is he turning heads? I know the CB room has great depth, but it never hurts having a guy like him especially if he is back to the sophomore version.

King is coming along. He's a solid developmental prospect who's also one of the youngest players on the team at 21 years old. He had some good moments over the summer, especially once he transitioned to the slot. King has plenty of experienced veterans to learn from, as well.

Dave from Middletown, CT

Wes, great job on the Melton story. Brought tears to my eyes more than once. Last year Bo went through the same thing Robert Rochell did this week. What's the rationale behind elevating a guy to the active roster for Sunday, cutting him on Monday, then signing him to the PS or 53 on Tuesday?

Rochell would've been out of elevations if the Packers chose to bring him up from the practice squad. I can't recall whether a player's PS elevations reset or not after he's released and re-signed, but cutting/signing Rochell to the active roster saved Green Bay an elevation either way. Considering Rochell already was on the practice squad, I don't think there was a huge risk signing and cutting him from the 53.

Steve from Scranton, PA

Hi guys…seems like the Packers play LA, SF and SEA on a more frequent basis than Arizona. According to my memory (which may be failing), the last time the Cards came to Lambeau, QB12 was outplayed by one Josh Rosen and Mike McCarthy was fired after the game. That was probably this franchise's rock-bottom over the past three-plus decades. Amazing how things can change over a 5-6-year period!

I'd imagine that was one of the hardest evenings of Mark Murphy's tenure as Packers president/CEO but that decision set the franchise up for one of the greatest year-over-year turnarounds in NFL history.

Samuel from Skokie, IL

The last two weeks Mike talked about the Packers playing teams that have trouble stopping the run. Then, he'll say they'll bring down a safety and put eight in the box, so the Packers will have to pass more because it will be hard to run. I think a defense that is bad against the run has trouble with a loaded box. It can't be that simple to get a defense to fix its run-stopping defense or every defense would stop the run, right?

It's cat and mouse, and a defense is giving something up in the secondary if it brings a safety into the box. It's the same if a team is playing in two high, the opposition may be more inclined to run. You can't just run your head into a wall. If the defense is giving you something, you need to take it and force the opposition to adjust.

Justin from Los Angeles, CA

You hear about QBs "avoiding" a certain CB over the course of a game. Is it possible to stay away from a safety in a similar manner, or does the position not work that way? How might a team game plan around a troublesome safety other than just running the ball?

You saw some of that Sunday with how Matthew Stafford approached McKinney but where safeties have an advantage is they can play the entire field, especially if they're in a two-high look. At some point, a QB needs to test the top of a defense and that's where McKinney is most dangerous.

Edward from Sioux Falls, SD

I believe that in the NFC North (or Central, whatever) that four of the five teams made the playoffs, with division champion Vikings getting beaten by Bears and Packers beating Lions (with me at Lambeau!) in the wild-card round. That is the closest we have come to every division team making the playoffs.

The 1994-95 playoffs, where both NFC Wild Card playoff games were contested among the NFC Central division. Then, the Packers lost to Dallas and the Bears lost to the 49ers by a combined score of 79-24.

Jake from Marina del Rey, CA

Just want to support Mike's "8" writing style. I do it the same way. Had no idea that wasn't the "normal" way.

I tried it that way and my "8" came out very wonky. My writing quirk is I use the double-story "a" in notes and letters. I've only known one other person who writes it that way.

Caleb from Knoxville, TN

Which 1-4 team will win their next game this weekend?

Jacksonville.

Ron from Mitchell, SD

Regarding all the talk about the safety position, recently I watched a video of Chuck Cecil's hardest hits. Whoa Nellie! Football was certainly a different game back then!

He didn't scuff up his forehead like that for nothing.

Craig from Green Bay, WI

How does the NFL determine bye weeks? Is it a systematic rotating policy?

If there's a method to the madness, I've yet been exposed to it.

Jim from St. Pete Beach, FL

Hi Insiders. Milton has come and gone. From our Children's Hospital, I can see The Trop and half the roof is blown off. A crane downtown fell and broke the water main. We're now on well water and generator electricity but still working! Was checking out WYMM from which I always learn so much. One thing I noticed is that Mike writes the No. 8 backwards from me. I'm guessing it's because he's right-handed and I'm left-handed.

I'm keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers, Jim. I'll be back again tomorrow for the Saturday edition.
