Inbox: They've bounced back before

Teachable moments galore

QB Michael Pratt
QB Michael Pratt

Lori from Brookfield, WI

Mike, you are the first person I know who has been complimented for being "grammatically inclined." What an honor!

That's one way to look at it.

Mike from Winchester, TN

Hi Mike, in Saturday's Inbox, Wes admitted that he's a Swiftie. My immediate thought was: "What's on the top of Spoff's playlist?" I'm guessing that beer and country music go together pretty well.

Not on my patio.

Sue from Three Lakes, WI

Neither Michael Pratt nor Sean Clifford turned in the kind of performance we wanted to see from our backup QB. What do we need to see in the next week to determine who will be QB2?

Production and rhythm. They often go hand in hand, and they were either lacking or non-existent in Denver. This will be a big week for both of those guys. They've bounced back before, and they must do so again.

Jim from Mundelein, IL

The Packers stunk in all aspects of the game. Broncos played their starters while the Packers did not. So what do you think the Packer staff learned from what appeared to the lay eye to be a mess of nothing?

They'll learn plenty from reviewing the game film, players and coaches alike. Teachable moments galore. I'll reiterate what I said in the live blog – it looked to me like the Packers' second units took a punch to the mouth from the Broncos' starters and never really recovered. The quick 10-0 deficit was not a surprise given the matchup, but the lack of response thereafter, particularly on offense, was disconcerting. Denver was the tone-setting team start to finish.

Greg from Keller, TX

It looked like a lot of things didn't go right for the Packers in this game, even accounting for Denver playing the starters early. It seems like this sort of preseason game could motivate some guys to up their game, though. Did anyone seem to stand out to you as doing individual things well enough to stand out from the overall rough showing?

It was a solid debut by rookie linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper, who had double-digit tackles and was always around the ball. Fellow linebacker Kristian Welch acquitted himself well, too. Early on, I thought Colby Wooden was a presence up front on defense. Malik Heath produced in the passing game, and Daniel Whelan continued his strong summer punting.

Mark from Fremont, CA

Good morning Mike and Wes, maybe the young guys got some good experience?

It's all good experience at this stage, even if it doesn't go particularly well. On balance, I didn't think Green Bay's defense played all that poorly. Some rough moments for sure, but once the Broncos pulled their starters, the only points the Packers surrendered came from Denver getting very short fields after the turnovers (one on downs). Then again, the Broncos were getting flagged left and right for penalties, so it's hard to know what to make of some of that action. Overall, given that both the joint practice and game this week left a lot to be desired, I expect we'll see a different collective energy and focus this week from the Packers when the Ravens visit.

Dave from Kaukauna, WI

Now that LS Peter Bowden's been released, might this be a year where no undrafted free agent makes the team?

Hard to say, and there's still a week of work left. But nobody in the current UDFA class is standing out as "that guy" thus far.

Bob from Jensen Beach, FL

Well, at least we got to see how they line up after a safety!

I think the league needs to adjust that. LaFleur made an astute point after the game (which folks in the live blog said Kuhn made on the broadcast as well) that there's no advantage on the free kick from the 20 after a safety when the setup zone is in the same spot on the field. I'll be curious if a rule tweak there is forthcoming.

Brad of Komoka, Canada

Hopefully that is the only dud of the season.

I doubt it will be, because it's a long season and every team has its duds. But I certainly hope it's the only time the offense fails to score any points.

Jeremy from Encino, CA

Why are the Packers wearing their home green jerseys at away games?

Because the home team gets to choose what it wants to wear, and both the Browns and Broncos chose their white jerseys.

Mike from Sioux Falls, SD

Which is more annoying, the Vikings Norse horn or the Broncos neighing horse?

C'mon, man. Not even close.

Doug from Neenah, WI

Good morning, Mike. The Packers laid an egg or three against the Broncos. Would that constitute a Denver omelette?

Please see yourself out. With that, the rest of the column is questions I answered before kickoff Sunday night.

Kenneth from Madison, WI

When evaluating players in preseason to make the regular-season roster, how much weight do you put on practice vs. preseason games? Are there other things you use to evaluate?

Well, first off, I'm not the one doing the evaluating. But the coaches and personnel folks look at the total body of work, and if there's a stark difference between a player's practice and game performances, they try to figure out why. The coaches also see how players handle meetings and film sessions, the questions they ask, how they process information and whether they need to be told anything twice. All that factors into what kind of player they believe a prospect will become.

Steve from Eau Claire, WI

Much of the excitement that I'm feeling about this season is the depth that the Packers seem to have at many positions. Despite appearances, it seems simplistic to say that a team can "draft for depth." You only get so many picks, every player is a gamble, and every team is evaluating the same players. Logic says that it would all be a wash, with every team scoring some winners and some busts. Are the Packers just that much better than everyone else at evaluating talent? Or just lucky?

There's certainly some luck involved. We're talking about young men who are building toward a physical and athletic peak. The process is not only about scouting and evaluating, though, but developing players as well. Not every draft class in the Gutekunst era has looked as strong as those in '22 and '23 currently do, so there are no guarantees in the future. But as far as this organization specifically, it is dedicated to finding and developing young players, and the entire football operation – scouts, personnel execs, coaches, etc. – is dedicated to doing so. That matters.

Mark from Westminster, CO

Welcome back to the Mile High City guys. I'm glad Larry is having a good time smelling the air. After listening to "Unscripted," I started to wonder if special-teams roster selections will change or be reduced with the advent of the new kickoff rules. Any thoughts?

I don't see any drastic effect one way or another. Players' special-teams abilities will factor into final roster decisions, but not any more or less so than other years, as far as I can tell.

The Green Bay Packers kicked off their second preseason matchup against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024.

David from Janesville, WI

Gents, I have to concur with the thought that the new kickoff rules will shorten the field and thus increase scoring. We've seen a trend of field goal attempts (and makes) getting longer and longer and now drives will more consistently start at the 30 or better. It will get to the point that gaining 30 yards puts you in scoring position on nearly every drive. This too will make those takeaways even more important.

That and red-zone stops.

Bob from Emmaus, PA

Is Jordan Morgan happy to be competing at right guard or unhappy to not be competing at left tackle?

I would think a young player would appreciate the coaching staff putting him where it feels he has the best chance to earn a starting job right now. To ask him to make that position switch also speaks to how his overall abilities are perceived.

Lori from Broomfield, CO

How do you maintain a team-first motto in a loaded WR room? Human nature and elite athletes can make for some bruised egos yearning for more participation.

Sure, but the culture ultimately comes down to the players themselves. If team-first is in place and fostered, me-first isn't going to fit in.

Kyle from Los Angeles, CA

Is there anything in rookie contracts regarding snap count and starting games or will Javon Bullard and Evan Williams make a constant amount regardless?

There's performance-based pay built into the CBA for players on rookie contracts that can earn them bonus money after the season. There's also the fourth-year salary escalator based on playing time over the first three years.

Brian from Madison, WI

When thinking about how the offense is going to spread the ball, and of course it'll depend on the opponent and the game plan, but all-in-all, the best player on offense is Josh Jacobs. Thoughts?

I wouldn't call him the best player on offense. But I will say aside from Jordan Love himself, Jacobs may be the individual most important to the offense's success.

JP from Geneva, IL

Greetings from behind enemy lines. Just wanted to "warn you" that the media and fans down here in Bear Country are VERY high on the team's prospects for this season. Adjectives such as elite, exceptional and exciting are being used to describe the Bears. Even a few of the players have been quoted giving themselves rave reviews. There is pervasive sense of giddiness amongst the Bear faithful. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

I don't blame Bears fans for being excited. Since taking the NFC North in 2018, Chicago hasn't posted a winning record in any single season. But all that enthusiasm means nothing more than it does in Green Bay for the Packers' prospects. Nobody has played a game that matters yet.

Michelle from Ringgold, GA

What to you see as the Packers' biggest obstacle this year?

I'm rather certain it hasn't arrived.

Tom from Two Rivers, WI

Can we please skip the last week of training camp and fake games and just start the season already? I'm 58. Ain't nobody got time for this! Otherwise, can you please send an angel to us elder folk who can help us with our dwindling patience?

Happy Monday.
