Mini-Camp Report: June 3, 2004

Despite sunny skies and nearly 70-degree weather, soggy field conditions forced the Green Bay Packers inside the Don Hutson Center for the second day of mini-camp, Thursday.

After running their two-back offensive sets Wednesday, the Packers worked on single-back offensive sets with Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport, Tony Fisher and Dahrran Diedrick sharing the workload.

In team drills, Diedrick took advantage of a hole opened by his offensive line, carrying the ball up the middle for a big gain. Later he changed directions in the backfield to get around the right side of the line before being forced out of bounds by cornerback Chris Johnson.

Johnson, who was taking part in team drills for the first time since returning from a knee injury that caused him to miss all of 2003, was also one of a handful of players to take reps returning kickoffs during special teams drills.

Other returners Thursday were receivers Antonio Chatman, Robert Ferguson, Carl Ford and Javon Walker, plus rookie cornerback Ahmad Carroll.

Carroll also picked off Brett Favre's pass to Donald Driver along the right sideline during team drills for his first scrimmage interception since joining the Packers.

Safety Mark Roman took reps with the first-team defense opposite Darren Sharper. Marques Anderson had been working with the No. 1 unit, but defensive backs coach Kurt Schottenheimer said he wanted to give Roman an opportunity with the starters.

Schottenheimer also indicated that Bhawoh Jue will get reps with the first team before the end of camp.

In team drills, Craig Nall hooked up with Scottie Vines for a 30-yard gain down the left sideline. Later on, Scott McBrien fired a bullet to a leaping Frank Rice for a 10-yard gain across the middle.

Defensively, Chris Watson showed his recovery speed to break up a pass intended for Driver down the left sideline, while linebackers Nick Barnett and Torrance Marshall converged to stop Davenport at the line of scrimmage for no gain.

Cornerback Al Harris saw limited action after tweaking an ankle, Wednesday, while center Mike Flanagan left practice early with a minor knee injury.

The Packers have another practice scheduled Friday morning. Then they'll take the weekend off before returning to the practice field Monday. All practices are scheduled for 11 a.m.

While the Packers are unlikely to practice outdoors this week, those plans could change. If the weather cooperates, the Packers hope to return to a dry Clarke Hinkle Field next Monday (June 7).
