NFL Europe: Week 2 Recap

The Green Bay Packers players allocated to NFL Europe made game-changing plays during the second weekend of action in NFL Europe.

Packers cornerback Therrian Fontenot's ballhawking ways helped propel the Rhein Fire to a 22-0 victory against the Berlin Thunder. The Frankfurt Galaxy also won by a large margin, defeating the winless Hamburg Sea Devils 31-14.

During the lone Sunday game, the Amsterdam Admirals defeated the Cologne Centurions 20-15. Admirals safety Atari Bigby, allocated by the Packers, made a heady play to preserve the win. As a blocked punt wound up bouncing around in the Admirals endzone, Fontenot kicked the ball out for a safety, surrendering two points to make it 20-15 rather than the six Cologne would have scored by recovering the ball.

Fontenot made just as great an impact for the Fire, intercepting two passes for 10 yards, deflecting three passes and collecting three tackles. Packers lineman Pete Traynor also helped the winning cause by starting at center for the second consecutive game. Behind his blocking the Fire garnered 106 rushing yards and controlled the clock for 35:42.

Packers quarterback Brian Wrobel had less success, throwing an interception while completing only 4-of-14 passes for 40 yards as the Thunder had difficult moving the football all day.

In other Packers news, wide receiver Chad Lucas and tight end Tory Humphrey both started for the Admirals. The former caught two passes for 40 yards while the latter caught two passes for 20 yards. Admirals wide receiver Vince Butler played but did not catch a pass. Along with his savvy special teams play, Bigby started at free safety and led the Admirals in tackles with seven.

Defensive tackle Jerome Nichols had one tackle in his second consecutive start for the Galaxy. The Galaxy's win increased their record to 1-1.
