No long-term concerns with Clay Matthews' injury

Surgery on broken nose likely to be scheduled this week

GREEN BAY - Head Coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday there are no long-term concerns with the injury Clay Matthews sustained in Saturday's charity softball game.

Matthews, who was pitching, had his nose broken on a line drive right back at him and immediately left the field. He later tweeted that he'll need surgery but otherwise he's fine.

"They're talking about scheduling surgery probably midweek," McCarthy said prior to Monday's OTA workout. "It's unfortunate. It's for a great cause. We're just glad he's OK."

Matthews had been sitting out the on-field work during OTAs anyway due to an offseason procedure on his knee, but regardless, McCarthy said the incident is not giving him second thoughts about the players' involvement in the annual softball game.

"I think it's great on a number of fronts," he said. "Anytime your players give back, charity, involved in the community … It's great for the fans. They sell it out every year. It's on its fourth player identity for the softball game. I'm not going to overreact to this."

The Packers are into their third and final week of OTAs with the offseason-concluding minicamp scheduled for next week.

McCarthy said the installation of the offensive and defensive playbooks will be complete by the end of this week, and he's pleased with the progress of the work.

"This offseason is different than we've had since '09 with the new defense and a number of new things on offense, but I can tell you the classroom work has been exceptional," he said. "You're seeing it carry over to the field. We're maximizing the team reps."
