The Green Bay Packers Tuesday claimed linebacker Corey Jenkins on waivers from the Miami Dolphins and waived linebacker Zac Woodfin. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions.
Jenkins, a 6-foot, 232-pound veteran out of South Carolina, was waived Tuesday by the Dolphins. Originally drafted by Miami in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft, Jenkins had two stints with the Dolphins. After playing in all 16 games as a rookie in '03, the team waived him last September and the Bears claimed him the next day. Then, waived by Chicago, Jenkins re-joined the Dolphins on waivers in December.
In 23 NFL games, 19 with Miami and four with Chicago, Jenkins has two career tackles (one solo) both with the Dolphins in 2003, and nine special teams stops.
Jenkins, 29, was a first-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox in 1995 and spent four seasons in the Boston and Chicago White Sox farm systems before shifting to football. A quarterback for two years in junior college, he then transferred to South Carolina and became a safety.
Likely to play Thursday in Green Bay's preseason finale at Tennessee, Jenkins will wear No. 57.
Woodfin had signed in the spring as a non-drafted free agent out of Alabama-Birmingham.
