From the press conference:
The Green Bay Packers and American Family Insurance Monday announced the details of this year's charity cap campaign, an effort to raise money to support service men and women, veterans and their families.
This is the third such campaign for the two organizations. The previous two, pink and red caps, raised a total of nearly $1.5 million for Wisconsin charities fighting breast cancer and heart disease.
Through sales of the new, stone-washed black cap with the Packers' 'G' on the front, the American Family Insurance logo and a red, white and blue remembrance ribbon on the side, the two organizations will raise money for Wisconsin groups that support the people who currently serve or have served our county, and their families.
Funds raised will go to organizations focusing on health care needs, and family support and assistance. Specific charities or organizations will be selected this fall.
"We're excited to kick off this year's cap campaign with American Family Insurance," Packers Chairman Bob Harlan said in making the announcement. "We're all very grateful to the men and women in uniform, both past and present, and recognize the excellent support they receive from their families. We know Packers fans and people in general will be excited to support all of them through this campaign."
Said American Family Vice President Rich Steffen, "Once again, we are providing Packers fans the opportunity to back an important cause - supporting the men and women who are serving in our country's defense - along with Wisconsin residents who have served in the past. The people who serve in our country's defense are called upon to set aside their own families, careers and personal lives. It's only right that we do what we can to help support them."
"All across Wisconsin, people want to show their support for our service men and women in meaningful ways," said Maj. Gen. Al Wilkening, commander of the Wisconsin National Guard and the state's senior military officer. "We are delighted that this great effort will provide an opportunity for Packers fans to support the team of service members from our state. These men and women and their families will receive some extra support thanks to this program. We look forward to a successful effort."
Public Service Announcements (PSAs) featuring Packers linebackers Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk and Brady Poppinga will be distributed to television stations around the state to help spread the word about the campaign.
Each sale of the cap, priced at $15, will result in a $5 donation going to charity. Caps now are available online at www.packersproshop.com, as well as at the Packers Pro Shop, Packers Pro Shop Extra Points and concession stands at training camp and on game days. Participating American Family Insurance agents also have caps available for purchase.
